When Jimmy Carter published his book "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid" he was appropriately criticized for linking Israel's policies in the territories to that of apartheid South Africa. Whatever one's views of Israeli policy, comparing it to the ideological, race-based approach of South African white supremacists was outrageous.

Some of us, at the time, also noted that as bad as Carter's perspective was, it wasn't even the worst use of the term or the concept with regard to Israel. Even worse would be the accusation that Israel itself -- forget about the territories -- is a manifestation of racism and apartheid ideology. This, of course, was not a new concept; recall the abominable Zionism is racism resolution of the United Nations, passed in 1975 and on the books until the early 1990s, and the Durban UN Conference Against Racism in 2001 with its focus on alleged Israeli racism.

Now there has emerged another full-blown legitimization of the Zionism is racism theme with the publication of "The Encyclopedia of Race and Racism," published by Gale, a division of Cengage Learning.

In the encyclopedia, first published in November 2007, there is an article on Zionism by Noel Ignatiev, a professor of Harvard and an individual with a long anti-Zionist record.  Ignatiev is the co-founder of "Race Traitor: Journal of the New Abolitionism," an online publication that has featured anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic authors who demonize Israel and the Zionist movement.

We at ADL, and other Jewish organizations, have condemned the appearance of an article on Zionism in a volume on racism.  Its very presence in that volume is inappropriate and will give continued legitimacy to the "racism" charge against Israel, particularly with a Durban follow-up conference scheduled for Geneva in April 2009.

The article itself contains a range of assaults on Israeli and Zionist history. It is notable for taking events and quotes out of context, in ignoring the complete picture of Israel and for selecting isolated facts to prove the author's preconception that Zionism is racist. One doesn't have to be a defender of all Israeli policies to see that here we have a distorted view of the Zionist movement and Israeli society.

Just a few examples. Ignatiev claims that Zionism seeks falsely to say Jews are a race. In fact, what Zionists talk about is the Jewish "people," reflecting the complex reality of Jews as a religion, as a group with a history and a tradition, and an attachment to a particular land.

Ignatiev tries to disassociate or trivialize the connection of Jews to the land of Israel, emphasizing early Zionist discussions about Uganda and other places for Jewish settlement. In fact, the founders understood that the only true link of the Jewish people was to the land of Israel -- that's how Jews survived in exile; that’s why Zionism succeeded as a movement.

He tries to separate Zionists from Jews by rehashing the charge that David Ben-Gurion and other Zionist leaders were ready to sacrifice European Jews during the Nazi era to further the Zionist goals. This despicable charge is an effort to suggest that Zionists are not only not true Jews but work against the interests of the Jewish people.

On the 1948 War of Independence, he removes complexity and sees only a bad Israel. He claims that 750,000 Palestinians were "driven" from their homes, as opposed to the complex reality of the origins of the refugee problem. Today, he notes, one-quarter of the refugees in the world are Palestinian, ignoring the question: Why haven’t they been resettled?

And, of course, in Ignatiev's world Israel is deemed racist by its Law of Return, ignoring the fact that every nation has preferential policies for its nationals and associated peoples regarding immigration.

The danger in all of these arguments is that they were included in an encyclopedia on racism that purports to give factual and educational information on a subject that is central to our understanding of cultures, religions and society. Putting these deliberately misleading arguments against Zionism into an encyclopedia gives them a legitimacy they do not deserve. It is especially troubling that students who come across the entry might see it as a true representation of fact, rather than an argument that needs to be read with a highly skeptical eye.

One is tempted to say: "So what's new, we've been there before." But efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel on the grounds that it is a racist state continue unabated.

Whether it is a renewed initiative to condemn Israel at Durban II, or boycott efforts, or intellectual or religion arguments, the line that Israel is racist and therefore not a legitimate state, will continue to resonate. We must therefore counter the kinds of arguments that appear in the Ignatiev article at every point.

Only that way can we turn around these efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel.

I agree absolutely! An anti-semite will always put a little truth together with a big lie and if not thrown out immediately, it becomes "fact". Well articulated Abe.

An interesting thing is that Ignatiev is in fact Jewish, or perhaps a non-Jewish Jew. I don't know him but I knew his parents very well and they were old-time Jewish leftists, defenders of the Soviet Union and Stalin. Like a lot of Jewish leftists, Ignatiev is concerned with the rights of blacks and Hispanics, etc., but cedes no rights to Jews.

American Academia and universities have become American Jewry's achilles heel. The only answer is vocal pro Israel lobbies and Israel sympathy organizations on every campus. For many decades the universities were felt to be secure for Jews, but this is obviously not the case. Ignatiev is only the tip of the icebergs heading out into the oceans of American public opinion on waves of anti-Bush backlash. Is American Jewry on its own Titanic? Unless American Jewish leadership re-establishes pride in Israel on America's university and college campuses, I believe it very well may be.

I have never heard of Ignatiev before. I guess it helps to answer anti-semitic ideologies by exposing the fallacies in their arguments, but the risk is that the Ignatievs of the world are given more publicity than they would achieve if they were ignored. In any case, Ignatiev could be relegated to oblivion if Israelis, and Jews all over the world, believed in a strong, Jewish state in their historical homeland. Too many Israelis don't believe in a strong Jewish state; so why should anyone else.

I guess having 22 countries unite in what they call an "Arab League" is not racist, even though these countries have or at least had non-Arab citizens.

It's not important what foreigner THINK but what Israel DOES for the good of its country.
7  |   boris, Sunday Dec 07, 2008
Having read that encyclopedia article I cannot honestly say whether there are too many factual mistakes for it to be reliable or whether the person who wrote it actually knows what he is talking about to be sympathetic. If this was a university paper, I would give it a big , red F

The encyclopedia entry on Zionism is outrageous. No question about it. But what I don't get is why it took Mr. Foxman, the self-proclaimed guardian of the Jewish people, so long to address it. It was the subject of Petra Marquardt-Bigman's excellent Jerusalem Post blog on October 19, seven weeks ago! And she credited the American Jewish Committee with having first brought this issue to public attention even earlier. Come, on, Mr. Foxman, in this world timing is everything.

An open debate with the Professor on the Harvard campus would help focus needed attenition on this breach of scholarship and obscene propaganda. Derashowitz would be a good choice for the opposing view. And, of course, there are many others who could do the job.

Let us not give him the honour of debating with him. I give him a digit and tell him that his brain has frozen in his Stalinistic views. Too much snow in those days.

To jpost .com this blog is a commendation for all the stories of the Jerusalem post. I am an americian and I hate to say that the American and british newscast are always negative about Israel. It grieves my heart to see this. I tell all my friends if you want to know the truth about Israel J post.com is where to go. This is where we will get the truth about Jerusalem. I am a pastors wife and I tell all my Christian friends J post.com is where the truth is. Thanks for the wonderful reporting. My favorite web site is jpost.com

Greetings to all America. I am not Jewish. I'm just your common everyday American "mutt." I do have something I wish to share with your folks here. I believe Martin L is correct in that open debate is the best way to get the truth out into the open. If Ignatievs man is wrong it'll come out in a honest and intelligent forum. Which brings me to my point, why is it we cannot discuss, debate, or in any way be critical of Israel in America? If you do, Pro-Isarel supporters try to destroy you and your credibility. In America we should be able to discuss anything. I wish you all a long and happy life.

Thank you for this article. Israel is constantly attacked, from Egyptian archelogists who deny slavery in the construction of the pyramids to arafats'/abbas' claims that there was no Temple in Jerusalem, and their claims of a "palestinian capital in Jerusalem. Our Christian friends should also realize that if Judaism is delegitimized Christianity also falls. This has profound effects in the Islamic view since they would no longer be linked as a people of the book and the code of treatment towards pagans is even harsher than to Christians and Jews.
15  |   Dave, New York, Monday Dec 08, 2008
ADL-Go on the attack. Engage the enemies of Israel. Destroy their credibility. Stop being so nice. Stop being so afraid of what they will say if you truly attack them. Fight for the rights of Jews. The reason they attack Israel and the Jews is because Jews historically do nothing about it, except perhaps give publicity to the people who attack them. ADL- We know people hate us, now show me your value, and go kick some &*#@! You'll get my support and my money then...

George the American mutt has a point. Studies show 'neutral' news is perceived by both sides as being biased for the opposition! Humans assume those not 'for' our side are 'against' it. And according to prophecy Israel will become the whole worlds divide line. Are your 'for' or are you 'against' it. Those not for it are going to suffer with those against it. Only thing is: Might be a good thing if those 'for' it to go back to the source and understand repentance and the value of prayer. Prophecy says those for Israel are going to see everything seem to go the wrong way, badly! Until Messiah.
17  |   Claudia LeFevre, Tampa, FL USA, Tuesday Dec 09, 2008
The ADL's Foxman is too busy attacking Pastor John Hagee, one of Israel's best friends, on some bogus anti-semitic charge than to go after real problems in a timely manner? I heard about this on alerts from the Christian website months ago. And I agree, this must be fought by both Christians and Jews. I am rather proud to consider myself a Christian supporter of Israel, thus a Christian Zionist. Is that too much assuming? #11, Faith, you need to get out of liberal MN, the news in FL is much more positive about Israel, and if they aren't we write scathing letters to shape up!
18  |   CSB Mich., Tuesday Dec 09, 2008
It is quite wonderful to read these comments; however, Mr.Foxman, where have you and the ADL been over these last several years? Why haven't you had a strong presence at the schools on all levels? It is seemingly commendable to publish all of these multi-cultural publications for children, but you exist to fight anti-Semitism and Hate against the Jews first . We have been living in a time when the ADL's raison d'etre met circumstances for which it was established, and you have NOT lived up your mandate.I suggest, you rally leaders and groups, educate them throughout the US and EU,and get towork

"Ignatiev' was the name of the Czar's voice who ruled in a ukase that one-third of the Jews should be killed, one-third expelled and one-third converted. I saw the name again in later years, but not the same reference. So he's Jewish? Not surprising. So is Noam Chomsky.

MR. FOXMAN, I WOULD LIKE TO CONTACT YOU by mail. Some ADL officers heard about me and have my resume. Thank you very much.

"Ignatiev claims that Zionism seeks falsely to say Jews are a race." In the former Soviet Union Jews were considered a race or a people. It is inexcusable for the leader of any Jewish group to not be aware of this, but as usual the brain-washed religious folk cannot handle nuance nor truth. Jewish "people," like French, Chinese, or Moroccan "people" mean people of a common ancestry. Some Jews are converts, most Jews have a common ancestry, hence a people. Race may be a misnomer here. I can assure you as a Hebrew person, if I call myself a Jew, it is NOT my religion, it is my ethnicity.

...we seem so very concerned over issues such as peace for the longevity of the Palestinian and Israeli governments, that it would be such a sad state of misappropriation of peace if we neglect our own with our domestic foreign policies, and for this cause, the new National Security Team for President - elect Obama I believe is a surety...our domestic issues regarding domestic crimes, and not excluding domestic terrorism has gone neglected in comparison to the war in Iraq...Let us be diligent about our issues of homeland security against criminals who want to hurt us here at home...RMC

I do not believe that a religion should be judged for people actions. I am american and I have Jewish friends and muslim friends. It is sad to blame a religion for a persons racial ignorance. But to open Isreal and not divide will put an end to all arguments of racisim. Radicals will not have an argument to further there hatred. I am sorry to dissagree with theleviteline.com but jews are not a race and you need to get your facts straight. I do not believe there were any Europeans in the middle east in the time of Moses. So if you believe Jews were a race maybe you need to go to the Soviet Union
24  |   theleviteline.com - Los Angeles, CA, Saturday Dec 20, 2008
Apparently TPB is ignorant, as are most others of basic facts of Jewish history (I have an MA in History). The Israelites, that is the PEOPLE of Israel (not Isreal) left Egypt. Not the people of the Jewish religion left Egypt. Centuries later the Romans destroyed the second temple and the Jews, as in the people who had lived in Judea, were dispersed around the known world. Judea, the country was where Israel stands today. Jews have been in a diaspora, from their ancient homeland until Israel's establishment. I suspect facts won't matter to TPB and his ilk. These r basic historic facts

Mr. Foxman, you repeat the "factoid" that "one-quarter of the refugees in the world are Palestinian" without adequately questioning this contrived statistic. See the UNWRA website for the ludicrous definition of a "Palestinian Refugee." Note that the Jewish residents of Palestine who were expelled during the Arab riots in 1929 and 1936-39 are specifically excluded from this definition.
26  |   Roddy Frankel, Chicago, IL, Sunday Dec 21, 2008
[ Link to page ] "WHO IS A PALESTINE REFUGEE?"... "persons whose normal place of residence was Palestine between June 1946 and May 1948, who lost both their homes and means of livelihood as a result of the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict" ... "UNRWA's definition of a refugee also covers the descendants through the male line of persons who became refugees in 1948. The number of registered Palestine refugees has subsequently grown from 914,000 in 1950 to more than 4.6 million in 2008, and continues to rise due to natural population growth."
27  |   Roddy Frankel, Chicago, IL, Sunday Dec 21, 2008
If the UN definition of Palestinian Refugees was applied to other conflicts throughout history, then every human being currently alive on this planet would be a refugee. Excuse me while I change into my rags, I have a documentary to film.
28  |   DJStahl, USA, Sunday Dec 21, 2008
Ignatiev may be purposely confusing "race" with "people." It's a topic much discussed in academia. "Race" as currently used in the US is a 19th-century European concept; seems how he intends it. But blacks in US would praise a "race-man," one who stood up for black culture, and Latinos describe "La Raza" as that broad community, or civilization, that speaks Spanish and partakes of that culture, a concept unifying Mexicans and Cubans, blacks, whites, and every skin color. Prior to 19th C, "race" in English had a different meaning, often evoking culture more than genetics (unknown then anyway).
29  |   Jimbo, Sunday Dec 21, 2008
Delegitimizing the state of Israel, is an oxymoron, like "compassionate conservatism". If you have to use the root word "legitimate" with "de" in front of it, it's probably not legitimate to begin with..

Do Zionists work against the interests of the Jewish people? Many think so. Myself, since they create misery, and thus by extension fan the flames of hatred and so cause terrorism, it is a valid point. In forcing Palestinians from their homes, a practice that still is occurring, and one that all US presidents, including Dubya, have opposed, it becomes even more pertinent. As hatred and terrorism results, and this rage is directed against Jewish civillians, this clearly illustrates Zionism, at least in the short term, is indeed working against Jewish interests.

Granted it appears a long way off now but eventually it will arrive if its progress is not halted and redirected.
