I have said it before and I must say it again - anti-Semitic conspiracy theories claiming American Jews control US foreign policy and are disloyal US citizens continue to be expounded through the Internet and permeate mainstream Web sites, blogs and commentaries.

The most recent case is the Charles Freeman affair - the designated Chairman of the National Intelligence Council who decided to withdraw his name from consideration after concerns were raised about the central role he might play in intelligence affairs, given his anti-Israel statements and connections to the Saudi government, as well as to the Chinese. The Freeman appointment was disturbing on its own terms without generalizing about where US-Israel relations were heading.

On US-Israel relations his views fall far from mainstream opinion in America and enter into demonization of Israel and its supporters in the US. Nothing better illustrates where Freeman is coming from than in his statement explaining his withdrawal.  He articulates, in the guise of a victim, the essential conspiracy view of the Israel-supporting community which made his appointment so troubling in the first place. He sees the exposure of his troubling attitudes toward Israel as proof  "that there is a powerful lobby determined to prevent any view other than its own from being aired."

"The aim of this lobby," he says, "is control of the policy process… and the exclusion of any and all options for decisions."  And Freeman blames it all on "the inability of the American public to discuss, or the government to consider any option for US policies in the Middle East opposed by the ruling factor in Israel politics."

Freeman's assertions are absurd and patently false. Yet the discussion abounds, sometimes in the same ugly anti-Jewish conspiratorial rhetoric.

Case in point is Michael Scheuer. A former CIA official responding to a question on the National Journal's Expert Blogs on "How to Talk About Israel," he has taken the rising innuendo against Jewish-Americans, as reflected in the writing of professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, to a new level. There is no sugarcoating or euphemism here. Scheuer out-and-out refers to pro-Israel Jewish Americans as "an identifiable fifth column." His bluntness continues.  They are "disloyal citizens."  They "help Israel suborn US citizens to spy for Israel." They "use their ready access to the media to disguise their own disloyalty."  They are "unquestionably enemies of America's republican experiment and will have to be destroyed… after a full public debate, at the ballot box."

Scheuer must have just studied The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. His statements are as clear a manifestation of anti-Semitic themes as was ever put out by a mainstream American public figure.

The Jews are all-powerful, as seen in their "ready access to the media" and their ability to "suborn US citizens." The Jews are only loyal to an outside party. In the Soviet Union, Jews used to be attacked as "cosmopolitans" and "Zionists." Here the Jews are "Israel Firsters" who "see worth in America only to the extent that its resources and manpower can be exploited to protect and further the interests of Israel in its religious war-to-the-death with the Arabs."

The Jews work in cabal to serve their own narrow interests against the interests of their own country. Scheuer compares pro-Israel Jews to the Copperheads during the Civil War "who sought to help the Confederates destroy the Union."

What is so striking about this diatribe is the lack of shame in stating these hate-filled attitudes so openly and baldly. It shows the level of penetration of such ideas and the weakening of constraints in the last few years.  And, of course, it contains the usual preemptive defense mechanism: exposing his critics, who will call him anti-Semitic, as employing the usual tactic to stifle legitimate criticism.

Where will it end?  It's time to stand up now. It shouldn't be left to American Jews in 2009 to have to say the obvious: that we are loyal and true citizens; that we have every democratic right to stand up for Israel; that Israel is a great democracy and ally of the US; that the American people know this and stand with Israel; that there is no control of opinion and policy - that, in fact, all kinds of views on the Middle East are explored; that US policy is pro-Israel but not anti-Palestinian; that these kinds of attacks are not merely illegitimate attacks against Israel but anti-Semitism of the ugliest kind.
We shouldn't have to say this. Others should.

Michael Scheuer can't be too smart. If the Jewish lobby were really as powerful and devious as he maintains, then If I were him, I'd be darn careful what I'd say about them. I guess we can suborn all of the people some of the time, or some of the people all of the time, but we can't suborn Michael Scheuer. The guy's faith must be unshakeable. Damn! Well, at least we got Hilary (?)

This excuse that it's "anti-Semitic to say that there is an Israel/Jewish lobby that runs the US is getting really old. It's obviously true or Foxman wouldn't constantly be talking about it and trying to say it is not true.

I am not jewish,i am not white but i love the jewish people.God bless the Jews and long live Israel.Anti-semites are just a bunch of frustrated miserable losers.

History seems to keep repeating itself. I'm reading a history through the lives of the Levy family in Prussia in the 1800s. No matter how loyal and contributive the Jews are to their adopted country (and often their loyalty goes beyond the ridiculous sacrifices), they could never be seen as worthy of acceptance and trust due to every loyal citizen.Anti-Semitism is a kind of evil hidden in the heart of world politics, and it seems as history would say, an inevitable affliction for the Jews. Therefore, learning from history, APPEASEMENT is not an effective solution, faith, courage and unity are.

Where are the "moderate" Americans to denounce these libels?? Where is Pres. Obama to denounce these comments and reject his advisors. The acts and statements of the Pres. advisors show his thoughts

As an American Jew, it may seem ironic that I have more sympathy for Michael Scheuer than Abraham Foxman, but I do. I'm deeply skeptical of Israeli policy and the lavish American military and diplomatic support it receives. I find the notion that US and Israeli interests are identical preposterous. And I deeply resent the fact, by virtue of my ethnicity and religion (and the tireless efforts of people lke Abe Foxman), I am tainted with the actions of a peculiar, aggressive and wholly alien state thousands of miles away. Thank God I've lost my fear of speaking out, and I pray other US jews do.

The article is correct, only there is more ant-Semitic language on the internet than you can shake a stick at! To Jay Goldberg, I hope you are being tongue in cheek about Hillary, remember that her husband has received more than one hundred million dollars from Dubai, not to mention other Arab interests! Hilary is just as politically motivated as Bill, if not more, and would willingly sell her dearest possession for influence (or cash). Do NOT look to the US under Obama for anything!!!

Richard #6: "I find the notion that US and Israeli interests are identical preposterous." -- So do I, and so do everyone else in Israel who I know. And I don’t believe that Jews have ever had a fear of speaking out. There has always been a very noisy minority that spoke out against anything and everything related to Judaism, and certainly about Israel (heck, look at some of the ultra-orthodox!). In fact, internal squabbling is almost synonymous with being Jewish, and always has been throughout the ages. You should feel secure with your opinions -- misguided though they are.

Thanks for the heads-up on Scheuer. I went and read the National Journal blog verbatim, and you're right. The guy is way over the line. His objectivity is worthless, and his views are trash. Why would Georgetown U destroy its reputation by having this bigot on its staff?

Walt and Mersheimer keep repeating their nonsense that they can not be heard because they claim that Jews control the media. If that is true how is it that Walt and Mersheimer have been on more television shows than Britney Spears? Walt and Mersheimer have learned that the more they accuse American Jews of terrible things the more televison time they get. Walt and Mersheimer live to be on television. They are examples of bigotry being rewarded.

Charles Freeman and Michael Scheuer have picked up where Henry Ford left off, with an updated and newly revised slurs edition of 'The Protocols' to compliment their world tour of 'Hate Israel First, Last and Always.' I pray that the ADL, Alan Dershowitz, Steven Emerson, Daniel Pipes, Caroline Glick, et al, continue to sleep with one eye open, and to fight the good fight against racism, bigotry and terrorism. As to the issue of a Jewish Lobby: 'If I am not for myself, then who will be for me?' It is written! It is a noble enterprise.....

Where are all the Jewish celebrities to speak out against this? Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Crystal, Steven Speilberg? the list is endless. The fact is that too many Jews are feckless and do not stand up enough for Israel. Can you imagine if Ireland or Italy faced the same threats everyday that Israel does? Those American Jews would be loud and agressive. It is a shame that so many prominent Americans do not do MORE to help the Jewish State.

The real problem is that most American Jews are left-liberals first and Jews second, third, or forty-seventh. If such liberals are pro-Israel at all, their pro-Israel attitudes either have to be wrapped in ten layers of "everybody only wants peace" claptrap, or sold as "special pleadings" that are eventually unsustainable. If American Jews saw support for Israel in a broader context of supporting the West against totalitarian religious medievalists, they would make a much more coherent case. But then they would be reviled as "Conservatives" by their peer group and no longer "fit in" ;-)

Freeman is a dangerous demagogue , whose anti-Israel views do not find much resonance in the United States.. It's different overseas. The Guardian went full throttle over his case; their CIF ( Comment is Free) section was filled with antisemitic content in ten minutes. On a broader note, seems like the Guardian has declared war on the Jewish state. Even the pretense is gone these days. Jews and liberal-minded folks everywhere should start confronting this fascist rag sheet. The sooner the better.

Scheuer was a highly incompetent CIA agent who, like those in his German ancestry knew how to follow orders, apparently nothing else. Scheuer was SUPPOSEDLY the CIA agent in Afghanistan directing the Northern Alliance back in 2000 when he had Bin Laden in his gunsight. Scheuer relyed the information to Tenet and Richard Clarke, who took it to Sandy Burglar and Miss NotBright, who vetoed a termination strike because Arafat would get upset. Instead of showing initative and being a Billy Mitchell, Scheuer chose not to act for America. His bitterness stems from Israel doing what he failed to do.

How sad this cartoonish account as good guys against anti-Semites. Freeman had impressive credentials as well as defects, including Saudi money and belief that China did right in killing students. His judgment was suspect.. There was no cabal against him, but it is no accident that we supporters of Israel led the charge. We rely on fact that Americans see Israel as a menaced democracy. To throw the Protocols of the Elders of Zion at Freeman gives anti-anti-Semitism a bad name. Is Abe's seeing conspiracies everywhere undermining his judgment or does this help jusitfy his outsize salary?

I find Mr. Foxman to be a loathsome fanatic and propagandist. Let's review: Israel Lobby is a name for a group of persons in finance, media/journalism, academia and government who uniformly exhort/pressure the US government for unprecedented largesse to Israel based on common values and strategic interests through articles in newspapers/websites and backroom bullying of politicians. The basic problems are 1. the arguments on common values and strategic interests are frequently wrong, often ridiculous and 2. the reasoned critics of the foregoing are instantly/wrongly impugned as anti-semites.

It seems that the, Anti-Defamation League, does not wish anyone to speak out against the very obvious influence of Jewish groups and individuals. I read the Isreali media websites on a regular basis, they will normally report a very different perspective on events. Israeli prime ministers openly boast of the influence, or dare I say control, that Jewish groups and individuals have in the United States. Mr. Foxman and his organization desire to keep this influence very quiet; they believe that the people will one day rise up, and take a stand against this fraud and manipulation.

Dear Abraham: I work at a college in California...hmmm, I was raised catholic in a very diverse group of first generation families, my best girlfriend in HS was Jewish, my stepdad is Jewish, my youngest brother has the gift of a Jewish last name...I think I have lived in a bubble of sort of knowing the discrimination is there but until I received an email from a clearly anti-semitic student in response to my posting jobs from jewishjobs.com at our campus, I did not feel directly the hatred, the double speak of the anti jewish feelings that are not open to dialog, I did not know, I am so sad.

You know, we really need to get passed this idea that anyone who is critical or questions the influence of the Israel lobby or the Israeli government is "anti-semitic" I have many Jewish friends as well as family members and that doesn't blind me from the plain truth that the Israel lobby in this country is astounding in it's power and influence- if not why hasn't our foreign policy changed in the last 50 years? When we criticize a foreign government or our own, no one means its the avg person on the street of that country- saying the Israel lobby is too powerful doesn't mean Jews are evil!

I wish the ADL,along with other non profits protecting rights of others would widen their scope. If you are for Gay rights,or rights of the workers,or what have you,and you give the cold shoulder to other minority or abberant social groups, then this is narrow. Where's the notion of dialogue? It's all monologue. I see dogma and rhetoric with regards to Israel, no real discussion. I was born Jewish. I am Hebrew. No getting around that. As for Mr. Foxman,I am tired of spokespeople, professional Jews, speaking for me or my positions on Nazis,on clansmen,on Black panthers,or sex,and drug laws.

i was in Amsterdam in 1972 right after the Munich massacre. Cabaret was playing and I went to see it. I found it frightening both because where I was watching it but the obvious "blame" that was being directed at European Jewery and in retrospect the dangers to come. With this in mind I suggest that any activity that reinforces this stereotype be denounced by the ADL as quickly as it attacks non-Jewish anti-semitism.Israel and the US do not share the same interests on all things,Madoff,Merkin,et al;pollard, rosenberg etc.should be condemned for re-inforcing sterotypes that cause harm

Foxman, you sound really desperate. Do you see any other minority group so vehemently running around screaming anti this and anti that? No,...it is only Jewish groups. Dont you see? The more you force your DoubleThink on people the more they come to hate this agenda. Just relax, stop telling people how to think. If you say there is no Jewish conspiracy, then why run around so desperately? People with a good conscience have no need to sweat it. Only a guilty complex runs around so desperately pushing their agenda on people. Thats some free advice, dont take it as anti-semetism.

I have learned recently from the Jews against Zionism website that they claim the zionists are promoting anti-semitism and much more. I am not Jewish but many Jews seem to be saying something quite different then what the ADL and Mr. Foxman are telling us. Who is telling the truth? Also: How about Professor Robinson, 50, who is Jewish, called the accusations and the campus investigation an attack on academic freedom. He said his former students, the Wiesenthal Center and the Anti-Defamation League had all confused his criticism of Israeli policies with anti-Semitism.

Dear Sirs: Please regard my comment as a question seeking clarification. I am a supporter of the State of Israel, as such, I do not understand why so many American Jews undercut their own people and future existence of Israel. Do they not realize that their constant criticism are fodder for Israel's enemies, in the Middle east and especially here in the United States. Anti Semitic rhetoric, overt and coded is ever present in American universities, the press and "intellectual elite" circles. What is going on here? Are the sons of David so eager to see the destruction of yet another temple?

What IS a New England Yankee to think of the relentless chauvinism of one of this country's smaller minorities...one that has clearly gotten too big for its britches. And why is it that so few American Jews, including Israel's loudest supporters, choose not to live there? Odd things that want thinking of....

It's the same old story. Assimilated Jews, since Egypt and Babylon, thought that acquiescing our identity and cozying up with our captors or host nation would exempt us from persecution. Each generation has seen waves of attempted genocide of the Jews, why should this night be any different? The US has turned against G-d, and godless Jews have embraced a liberal, humanistic philosophy in place of HIm. Just when Jews in America became a bit too comfortable, the backlash against us has begun, again. and we may just need Israel to be there for us after all in the End.

The dragon, the false prophet & the beast are demonic spirits that have intelligence with those that forsake the Holy Covenant [Dan.11:30] through thoughts & feelings, and telepathic messages. [mental telepathy] Slippery, rebellious & stubborn unclean frog-like spirits go out of their mouths. They overcome a gullible dupe who is willing act as their mouthpiece and harden him in rebellion. Anti-Semitism can be the outward manifestation of an inward problem. A Trojan horse pandemic virus seeks to break out of isolation through a series of mutations and by joining up with other local flu viruses

khalid-Morocco: it s clear enough that it is the so-called, illegal satate of Israel who is the party who hinders the negotiations with so many obstacles.Netanyahu and those who were before him never had a sincere will to engage in serious negotiations. They are simply afraid! they have nothing to give! they believe that the land is theirs, the promised land as they claim! But,wait! what negotiations are you talking about!? Abbass is an illegitiamte president of the Palestinians. He does not have the right to represent them! He is a mere weak lamb facing the Israeli wolf! Mrs. Clinton is a real hypocrite, but no wonder!
Chris USA: This is all very interesting, however, I would like to know what Israel will do to prevent international opinion against Israel from progressing from merely disapproving to truly substantive measures? Granted it appears a long way off now but eventually it will arrive if its progress is not halted and redirected.
Rajkumar das james surrey bc canada: Israel has zero rights morally or by international law. the settlements are illegal and israel can make its own law like Hitler did. It is beyond any reason or understanding the Israeli position on occupation or settlements from a people JEWS who suffered injustice most. The supporters and the IDF must have some conscience to aid and preserve this holocaust genocide of the century. the American soldiers lesser war criminal than IDF are suffering from post traumatic syndrome and I know there are enlightened Israelis and deserters. Excuses like security antisemitism are totally baseless.
