If there is one thing we have learned from history, it is that predicable patterns of behavior provide the underpinnings of virulent anti-Semitism. Like a lethal virus or a pestilence, the disease of Jew-hatred cannot flourish by itself. It needs the right conditions, the right combination of circumstances and a proper environment to grow and spread.

We know, for example, that the Holocaust didn't begin with the bricks and mortar of the gas chambers. It started with words - hateful words, ugly words - words that could inspire enough hatred to create the conditions for a rapid-fire combustion that led to the annihilation of six million Jews and millions of others.

And we know that the 9/11 terror attacks in the US didn't start with airplanes and boxcutters. Those attacks began with hateful ideas and words that inspired the terrorists to maim and kill more than 3,000 innocent people.

For centuries, one of the most powerful tools in the arsenal of anti-Semites has been the ability to fuel hatred by creating a mythical idea of Jews being a pathologically loathsome people. These notions are founded in stereotypical attributes and hateful canards - that Jews are greedy, that they keep to themselves, that they are all-powerful, that they are "blood-suckers," or that they control the government or the media in order to advance sinister agendas.

Perhaps the worst manifestation of this hatred is the ancient blood libel. This odious myth, handed down through the centuries from medieval times to the present day, suggests that Jews prepare their Passover matzot with the sacrificial blood of Christian children. This despicable slander led to pogroms, expulsions and bloodshed against Jews throughout history.

The blood libel is recognized as one of the taproots of anti-Semitism. And it is as alive and well today as it was more than a century ago. Most recently it resurfaced with accusations now swirling through the blogosphere that American Jews and Israeli soldiers are involved in a broad conspiracy to harvest organs for profit.

It started as a whisper. The whispers suggested that Israeli soldiers tasked with patrolling the Palestinian West Bank weren't just policing and keeping the peace, but were rather involved in something much more nefarious - capturing innocent civilians so their organs could be harvested and illegally sold on the black market.

As with all urban legends of the Internet age, the source of this rumor isn't clear. We do know, however, that the news of the arrest of several high-profile public figures and several rabbis in New Jersey on charges of graft and money-laundering may have inspired the initial whisper campaign.

Then came the "news" out of Sweden that - yes - Israeli soldiers were in fact involved in illegally harvesting organs. This, according to the mainstream Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, which ran a two-page spread detailing seamy allegations of a conspiracy by the Israel Defense Forces to remove organs from kidnapped Palestinian civilians.

This was, pure and simple, a fabrication cut from whole cloth. The article, titled "They plunder the organs of our sons," had no basis in fact. It relied on claims by a handful of Palestinians who spoke to the reporter.  No effort was made to investigate those claims. And the ink had barely dried before some of the Palestinian "sources" recanted.

The scandalous Aftonbladet story appeared on August 17.  In the pre-Internet era it might have made few ripples beyond Scandinavia. But instead, the story, bereft of even a grain of truth, spread like wildfire across the Internet and took on a life of its own.

The Arab and Muslim press, which routinely dabble in anti-Semitism both in print news articles and in editorial cartoons, eagerly picked up the theme in late August and early September. Newspapers in Jordan, Qatar and Oman ran a series of cartoons over several days portraying Israeli soldiers as vicious butchers, gleefully cutting off the body parts of Arabs. One cartoon cast the state of Israel, Gaza and the West Bank as a side of beef being carved up by a stereotypical black-hatted Jew.

In the latest iteration of this blood libel, it is now Algerians who are the alleged victims of an international Jewish conspiracy to harvest organs.

By mid-September, the blogosphere and many Arab and Muslim media outlets had picked up on a story, apparently first reported on September 6 by Algeria's daily newspaper Al-Khabar, that bands of Moroccans and Algerians were roaming the streets of Algeria's cities and kidnapping young children, who were taken into Morocco, where they were purportedly sold to Israelis and American Jews to have their organs removed.

The fabricated story has since been reported by some mainstream media outlets in the Middle East, such as the pan-Arab satellite network Al Jazeera, and was subsequently picked up by dozens of other news sites and blogs around the world, including anti-Semitic sites that appreciate its propaganda value.

The story, which also seems to be increasingly disseminated via e-mail, is nothing less than a modern variation of the ancient blood libel.  It claims that Interpol, the international police organization, has revealed the existence of "a Jewish gang" that was "involved in the abduction of children from Algeria and trafficking of their organs."

What are the lessons to be taken away from this new revival of the blood libel?

One is that we cannot be complacent when faced with misinformation and slander. In the new 24-hour media environment, which is fueled by rumors in the blogosphere, it is far easier than ever before for myths to spin out of control before someone bothers to check the facts. And we know what can happen when anti-Semitism is left unchecked.

There needs to be an immediate response, not just from watchdog organizations, but from governments and people of authority, who will to stand up to make clear that such unfounded rumors playing on age-old stereotypes about Jews are unacceptable.

Sweden's leadership, faced with a controversy not of their making, failed in this moral test by setting up the Aftonbladet blood libel story as a matter of freedom of the press. In fact, they were defending the indefensible, a terrible fiction masquerading as fact.

Another lesson is the need for more education, especially in democratic societies that can serve as the stalwarts against anti-Semitism. It is vital that societies continue to educate their young people about the dangers of anti-Semitism and the history of the Holocaust so that the mistakes of the past will not be repeated - never, ever again.

One of the mistakes of the past is to deal exclusively with mistakes of the past. The Holocaust needs to be taught as the consequence of hate, of people ganging up on people and nations ganging up of nations, of libels and vicious rumors. It is too easy to bring across the message "Nazis - bad, Jews - helpless" when teaching about the Holocaust. It's insufficient for preventing the next one. There'is a good reason why the Arab and pro-Arab media relentlessly push the line "Zionists - bad, Palestinians - helpless": it works. More education is needed about what is really going on NOW.

I am afraid that it is the president of the United States that is fueling this hatred against Israel and Jews in general by keeping silent. His silence is deafening. How come Emanuel, Axelrod, Geithner, Summers and other Jews are so quiet too. When will the Jews in the US stand up for israel. What is wrong with you people?

Words may be necessary, but far from sufficient, or even totemic. Where nazism became not just a problem but threat was with Nuremburg laws. The distinguishing feature of politics of that era were the paramilitary wings of the nazis and communists -- how you know you have a problem. Where`s A.Foxman when people started bringing assault rifles to town halls this summer? Will he be so sanguine if his events are so attended? That is the troubling sign, not Joe Wilson. His interruption, big deal. Saying someone lied, punishable, and was. Sweden is post-conflict following 30YearsWar. So should we.

Education ,as you say, is important. How about first educating the Jewish community about the futility of blindly supporting "liberalism" wherever they find it, even when it is post-Zionist and anti-Israel. It deligitimizes us. We know who our external enemies are. It's those "enemies from within" which are a greater to concern to me, Organizations such as J-Street which try to legitimize themselves by deception and a pretense of supporting Israel, only sends an incorrect impression of real Jewish sentiment, and provides aid and comfort to our worst enemies for their propaganda industry.

Only Jews can fight anti-Semitism. And this can only be done by being strong and defending our own country Israel. All of us in the Diaspora are sitting targets - it's only a matter of time. We should all move to Israel and defend our heritage there against those who would destroy us. By making the cost of anti-Semitism to a would-be attacker so high, they may then leave us in peace and find another scapegoat. As Jews we have no choice - History has proved that again and again. Assimilation doesn't work.

Mr. Foxman, as a Christian, I am shocked and appalled at the magnitude of hate that you have described is directed against the Jews...again. It is difficult to believe that this kind of evil has come in my lifetime to spew such poison and so soon after the Holocaust. People of faith MUST speak out against such evil, or it WILL spread and WILL be repeated. Thank you for your voice.

Mr.Foxman, this is strong and timely piece. It is a great pity that the internet, which is such a great resource can also be used to spread lies. This is another example of anti-Semitism, that is full of hatred. Also, the internet has websites that attack different faiths with lies and plain inaccuracies. Their is also a lot of anti-Catholicism on the "net" which is also a pity. I am a Irish Catholic who reads "Jpost.com" and I am also a keen supporter of Israel. Less hate and more understanding would be great for everyone. Shalom and Happy Rosh Hashanah to everyone.

It will never go away. We Jews will remain the sacrificial lamb of the world's cadre of haters and the ignorant. If Jews were never to have been, the world would have had to invent us. It clearly demonstrates that evil is much stronger than good...while a tiny bit of evil is capable of causing great misery, no amount of good can conquer evil.

"The return of the blood libel" Just in time, Abe. Gives you something to do besides fronting for Obama.

Mr Foxma I disagree with you completely. I M an American who lives in Israel. The only way to finally end this scourge of anitsemitism is to finally destroy the head of the snakes. First Iran, then Saudi arabia, next Syria, and then Pakistan. There is no other choice left to the civilized world. Islam is the cancer of the world, and you know it sir

Don't depend on education of the Holocaust or antisemitism to prevent a repeat in the future. The only thing that will prevent a repeat is the deterrence of a strong IDF. Evil always follows the same pattern, antisemitism will always be with us, and liberty will always be bought with blood. The times may change, but the hearts of evil men will always be the same.
14  |   Lese Majeste, Friday Sep 18, 2009
C'mon Abe, you can do better than to scream 'anti-Semite' anytime some Israeli gets caught breaking the law. Like the ones nabbed by Goldstone in his war crimes of Israel report. That's actually what this column is about, isn't it? Did you ever read the fable of the "Boy who cried Wolf?" Do you see the comparisions? Israel and her backers have sceamed 'anti-Semite' so many times, the term no longer has any meaning. So grow up and take some responsibility for Israeli war crimes. Some of your brave IDF soldiers already have, so let Ehud and 'Bib' be the next to man up.
15  |   Raphael, Friday Sep 18, 2009
I agree with Dennis. The only way we can stop anti-semitism is by bombing Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Syria. Whoever is left alive in these countries should then become our slaves, or serve as organ donors (or as food). Only then can we stop antisemitism!

I take an excellent article and I apply it to all parties that have been discriminated against. The problem is people read and listen to what they want to read and listen to. More information doesn't equate to better read individuals. And the news sources have their own spin and oftentimes you have to listen to their debating and less reporting. I see a dummy down of the news and more flash less substance. It sells.

Isaac Rosenbaum was arrested by the FBI for moneylaundering said to involve human kidney sales for up to $160,000 each, according to the NJ Star Ledger. These charges, along with the other money laundering with the Syrian rabbis needs to be expedited to reveal the truth. Anti-semiticism spreads like other libels, and is destroyed by TRUTH.

Where is "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS" when the JEWS are accused of unbelieveably horrible acts? If these charges were being made against another race, the out-cries would deafen the entire EARTH: but as usual, not ONE nation is stepping up to defend the Israelis! As a Christian, I find it deplorable that even the EUROPEAN countries are accepting these lies as the truth, and allowing them to gain momentum. What are they waiting for before they act to stop them...ANOTHER HOLOCAUST? (Maybe they are waiting for the JEWS to riot, burn Embassies and cars, smash windows, and....?)
19  |   David, Saturday Sep 19, 2009
you are accusing Arabs of being anti-Semitic while you are openly anti- Arab. How can anyone take you seriously?
20  |   Reuven Ben-Daniel, Israel, Saturday Sep 19, 2009
Why are all these so called 'Christians' anti-Semitic? The reason is simple and ignored. It is not the disproved claim that the Jews crucified Jesus, it states quite plainly in the New Testament that Jesus was condemned and crucified by Roman law. It is that they resent the fact that they are nominal Christians, and they yearn for the days that they were pagans, free from the restraints of Christianity. They are anti-Semitic because they hate Jesus the Jew and the Jewish apostles, who took them out of paganism.
21  |   Julius Rayetzkas, Lithuania, Saturday Sep 19, 2009
One thing about the Holocaust which I never understood is, why had Germans to murder all the Jews, grownups and children alike? They did it in such a fashion, in such a haste, as if, if they wouldn't succeed to kill, something would be wrong. What was the rationale behind these killings? Was that kind of a psychopatic behavior on their part, or was that a conviction that this was absolutely necessary? Did they do that, because, as Germans, they got orders and order was (is?) the way of life for them?As for all collabators, I understand, for them it was the inborn hatred.
22  |   Israeli, Saturday Sep 19, 2009
It's a lost cause. The mere attempt to dissuade anti-Semites that we are not bloodsucking child killers is humiliating and should not be attempted. I don't care what they say, I live in my own country, thankg God. Let them believe whatever racist lies they like. If they want to try and harm the Jewish people, they will meet our blazing guns.
23  |   Julius Rayetzkas, Lithuania, Sunday Sep 20, 2009
(continuation) When we find out exactly, why it was imperative for the Germans, during their Nazi era, to kill EVERY Jew, regardless of what he did or was, we will understand why it is imperative for so many today to accuse and libel Israel regardless of what it does or is. That's why I asked the question about rationale behind the killings. I think the answer lies in the essence of a human being. As long as there is hatred - no matter at whom directed - there will be antisemitism. So a hope is only in the betterment of a man.
24  |   dUnited States of America, Sunday Sep 20, 2009
I've read that in America the response to the Holocaust, and to Jew-hatred in general, has been the ADL; in Israel it has been the IDF. We need both. Consider the quality of some of the comments here in response to a reasonable essay about shody journalism, its potential consequences, and appropriate responses to it: Foxman is anti-Arab, Foxman is dodging Israeli war crimes. Yes, let's promote education and tolerence. But let's also always be ready with the force of arms to defend against ignorant stupidity when it reaches a violent pitch.
25  |   Scott Benlevi, Sunday Sep 20, 2009
The best way to counter these blood libels is to vociferously present the truth about christian and islamic genocide against Jews all the time and never shut up about it. These non-Jewish infidels hate hearing about the misdeeds of their ancestors, so it needs to be constantly thrown in their faces. Expose their corruption to the fullest and MAKE them take responsibility.
26  |   arthur Jersey City NJ USA, Sunday Sep 20, 2009
The blood libel got tremendous credibility when the US attorney busted the 44 people in NJ and tied in, for shock effect, the human organ allegation. Thank you Atty Gen Holder and President Obama
27  |   Just a thought, Sunday Sep 20, 2009
SOLVE the GLOBAL organ harveting problem rather than complain about it. Saying it was just the Jews or covering up that POOR people's organs ARE sold to RICH donors does not help.

Readers, I am in dire need of your help. I think that this article and abe foxman's fine character makes this forum the best to ask my next question. My grandma is very sick and needs a new kidney. Please, please give me the number or email of someone who can help locate a donor. I hear that it is against the muslim religion to drink and smoke, which would make for healthier tissues. Thank you

Carla della Ponte, the Balkan war crimes prosecutor, reported on how Kosovar Albanian Muslims harvested the organs of captive Serbs during the conflict there. She was told to shut up by her superiors. Now the ememy and their wretched catamites accuse the Jews of doing likewise. The enemy triggered a run on the banks that nearly brought down the financial system and yet the dhimmis could only focus on Madoff's "Ponzi scheme," as if all banks don't operate beyond their means. The enemy demolished a couple of large buildings in New York a while back and whom did the murids blame? Pattern.

Being God's chosen people means never having to explain or apologize to one's inferiors. If anyone tries anything against Israel, they will meet our guns. If the US congress tries to stop sending us dollars, they will meet our public relations groups and lobbyists calling them out as anti-semites.
31  |   Padraic, Tuesday Sep 22, 2009
The Serbs fought Moslems for centuries to hold their land, and the USA bombed them to death so Christian churches would be destroyed and replaced with mosques. Then, Serb organs were stolen. Sickening, and that was under Ms. Rodham- Clinton's hubby.

For almost 700 years, the entire world remains beset by a mobile and sentient plague called Chana. The Jewish people, as we find ourselves in this day and age, are the nucleus of what can defined as "pure and untouched" by this mortal enemy of humanity. Outside of the assorted despots who are tools of the Chana, every kind of person who ever finds the opportunity to acquaint themselves directly with Jews, relents because self loathing is the true prejudice we all must overcome. Most of the positive accounts of inter tribal co-existence in the west are now ashes in Chinese cinder blocks.

That is not blood libel exactly. If jews cannot be organ donnors, then, Where they find an organ donnors in Israel?
34  |   Judas, Canada, Sunday Nov 01, 2009
Why dont you let a Palestinian land form and then you all can live in peace. Already you are on Arab lands instead of being in Germany (where the Holocaust happened - it did not happen in Palestine!) Then you wont be worried about the muslims. Your whole generations have lived and died in fear. Get rid of this fear and be like other European countries who have moved on from the WWII mentality.
35  |   robert, NY, NY, USA, Monday Nov 02, 2009
Lets talk truth: When a state of 6 million Jews is constantly attacked for its existence by 1.5 billion muslims & 90 % of UN member countries, something is very wrong in the world. There is a conspiracy by most of the countries to get rid of the Jewish state of Israel. The Big Lie goes on and on about why the Arabs n the West bank are still in poverty. It is not Jewish fault but Arab fault. The arabs in the west bank are the pawns being sacrificed to destroy the Jewish state of Israel. The arab countries are very wealthy with trillions of dollars of oil money. Not a cent goes to help them !

B. Cohen USA: More of Abe's liberal bloviations. "Relax, it's only a shower." Sorry, Abe, Israel better not buy that this time around.
khalid-Morocco: it s clear enough that it is the so-called, illegal satate of Israel who is the party who hinders the negotiations with so many obstacles.Netanyahu and those who were before him never had a sincere will to engage in serious negotiations. They are simply afraid! they have nothing to give! they believe that the land is theirs, the promised land as they claim! But,wait! what negotiations are you talking about!? Abbass is an illegitiamte president of the Palestinians. He does not have the right to represent them! He is a mere weak lamb facing the Israeli wolf! Mrs. Clinton is a real hypocrite, but no wonder!
Chris USA: This is all very interesting, however, I would like to know what Israel will do to prevent international opinion against Israel from progressing from merely disapproving to truly substantive measures? Granted it appears a long way off now but eventually it will arrive if its progress is not halted and redirected.
