A Point of View: Anti-Semitism in America must not be ignored

I have been in Israel for a week speaking on a subject that doesn't often get a lot of attention in this country: anti-Semitism in America.

Why is it a subject that is largely ignored here? Actually, it is understandable given the immediate and urgent threats that face Israel. And even when anti-Semitism is addressed, the focus appropriately falls on Islamic anti-Semitism and European anti-Semitism.

Moreover, American Jews always like to talk about how they are the most successfully integrated Jewish community in the history of the Diaspora. So what's to worry?

I came here to talk about America and anti-Semitism not to set off alarm bells. Rather to say that despite the comfort level of American Jews, which is very real, there is no reason to be complacent.

Israelis need to know that even in America, though hardly on the same scale as in Europe, there is that combination of daily incidents of anti-Semitism -- against individuals and Jewish institutions -- and larger conspiracy theories about Jews that are so pernicious. Of course, Israelis should always pay attention whenever there are any troubling signs coming out of America or for American Jews because both are so vitally important to Israel's security and well-being.

So what are those signs which should not be ignored? I'd say they break down into four categories.

First, are anti-Semitic incidents, including several violent attacks on Jews. The numbers, as presented in ADL's annual audit of anti-Semitic incidents, are not extraordinarily high this year. Still, incidents take place across America which leaves those who are the targets traumatized and the community a little bit less secure.

Second, and probably more unsettling, are the findings in our latest opinion poll of the American people which shows that a third of the public believes that American Jews are more loyal to Israel than to America. Now mind you, we didn't ask people if they believed Jews were as loyal to Israel but more loyal. Such high numbers raise questions as to how fully accepted.

Third, is the phenomenon of the Internet, that great facilitator of information and communication, but also a facilitator for hate and anti-Semitism. It is hard to quantify anti-Semitism on the web and who is exposed to it. We do know, however, that the racists and hate groups have found a remarkable tool for recruiting to their organizations and for trying to lure the young into a life of bigotry and particularly hatred of Jews.

Finally, and most surprisingly, is the appearance in the mainstream of classic anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. We expect these kinds of things from the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, or Farrakhan's Nation of Islam.  We don’t expect it from professors at Harvard and the University of Chicago or from a former President of the United States. One has to go back to the period before WWII when the aviator hero Charles Lindbergh accused "powerful Jews" of dragging America into war against the Nazis to serve the interests of the Jews.

Now Jews are being accused of bringing America to war against Iraq; of controlling American Middle East policy for the benefit of Israel against American interests; and of stifling free discussion if Middle East issues.

Quite a combination of accusations -- right out of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Not that I believe most Americans buy into this claptrap. Still it circulates in respectable circles. Mearsheimer and Walt, the two professors, are welcomed on campuses across the country, as if all they did was present another point of view.

What's it all about? I believe it's an effort to intimidate American Jews, to get us to back off from exercising our rights as Americans to lobby and educate on behalf of what we believe -- the safety and security of Israel and the goal of peace in the region.

We won't be intimidated but we take these developments seriously. And Israelis need to be aware of what's going on.

What's the matter, Abe? Are you scared the truth is finally emerging? It is, and you cannot stop it. Israel maneuvered America into fighting in Iraq. Just like they're trying to do now with Iran.

There IS Jew hatred and not just in America, but what can you expect when even legitimate criticism of Israel is pounced on and silenced by organisations like your own ADL? Islamofascism is known for its nefarious methods of silencing criticism in the same way. British and American boys are being killed in a war nobody but people with their own agendas wanted. Jews (not just American Jews) are increasingly being seen as part of the problem because of the way we refuse to see Israel's faults. We're increasingly being viewed in the same way as Islamists. Wake up and smell the coffee, Foxman.

To Richard in Canada and Lani Rosen, If Israel and the Jews are so powerful in influencing American foreign policy to serve Israeli and Jewish interest, please explain to me why Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Gaza Strip only to be thanked with daily rocket barrages that the Israeli government has done little to stop? Please explain to me why the official policy of the Israeli government is now to negotiate a peace agreement with the Palestinians that involves creating a Palestinian state, including concessions in Jerusalem?

Mr Foxman why do Israelis have to be made aware of what is going on? Surely they have enough to contend with without getting involved with a battle people like you started? I read comment 2 and I agree with everything Lani Rosen said. Time to wake up and change, before it is too late. If things get worse some Jews will not have the luxury of moving to Israel. Why spoil it for them in the countries where they just want to get on with their lives and are nothing but loyal citizens?

Josh, "A Clean Break" "Defence of The Realm" ? Lani Rosen seems to be picking up on a change in the public mood, good for her, muted silence never achieved anything. Abe Foxman criticises Christian groups for daring to do what he does every day, talk politics, get involved. He thinks nothing about lobbying against recognition of the Armenian Holocaust for "Israeli interests." Abe can accuse his critics of anti Semitism, people simply don't care any more. It isn't Israel ordinary Americans have had a belly full of, it's people like Foxman, its groups like the ADL.

Lani and David- you've got to be kidding! Does "legitimate criticism of Israel" in your eyes include demonizing every act of Israel's in defense of its citizens, applying double standards and delegitimizing Israel's right to exist? Where do you get off comparing American Jews' pride and identification with Israel, utilizing our constitutional rights to express ourselves with Muslim fundamentalists' conspiracy theories, racism, outright lies and justification of terror? Sorry to sound harsh, but grow a backbone and stand up for what's right and true!

I am often appalled by the suicidal tendencies of my fellow Jews. Is it somehow wrong to advocate the survival of the Jewish people in all corners of the world, including Israel.? How is that incompatible with American values? Foxman is correct in his assessment. How many more Jews must be killed by the deadly bacteria of anti-semitism? Are we out to prove our moral superiority by lining up to accept the hangman's noose?

Good post. I came across this blog and had to read it. Unfortunately, America is ahead for some dark times. Europe's increasing anti-Semitism pro-Palestine is frightening. One minute, countries like England claim to be pro-Israel and then the wind changes. People's opinions are fickle. They buy into drama, fear, hatred. The us versus them thinking has not disappeared. I have seen, heard things which are very reminiscent of Nazis and rhetoric from the Protocols. Coincidence? Alarmist? I think not!!

TO RICHARD IN THE 51st State of the USA - A country with 7 million citizens and the size of New Jersery pushed the mightest nation on the globe into war, huh? Brilliant deduction. Oh yea, it must have been the 6 million American Jews acting in unision, which would be comical anyway, directing the President of a country with 300 million citizens. Thank you for making Mr. Foxman's point perfectly. Please crawl under the rock you came from.

The nation's campuses are the hotbeds of anti-Semitism in America. This all goes under the heading of allegedly progressive and sympathetic concerns for Palestinians, which is a way of advocating violence against Jews in a socially acceptable way: by proxy. As far as Iraq goes, of all major ethnic groups in America, Jews are the most strongly opposed. Luckily, Evangelical Christians have more militant views on Islamofascism. We'll need their help in opposing Iranian nukes.

AND NOW A PERSON WHO MAY OR MAY NOT BE A MOSLEM IS BEING POSTIONED TO BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE I BUT NOT A JEW . THINK ABOUT.

I have devoted many hours in the last 15-20 years in reading to understand both Arab Jewish history. I also try to be familiar with related current events globally. The U.S. has, and should continue, to support Israael both fiscally and diplomatically. I am unaware of any more noble foriegn relation.

You blew it, when you didn't stand up for the Armnians. You should step down from power, your a disgrace to jews everywhere, foxman.

The Israeli lobby in the US administration pushed for the invasion of Iraq to help Israel gets rid of one of its enemies. However, this enemy (Iraq) was not a real threat to Israel. Even in the epic of Iraq power, Israel was able to attack and destroy a nuclear reactor in Iraq. Israel dragged us in this war to help them establish "Greater Israel" which extends from the river Nile in Egypt to the Euphrates in Iraq. I wonder why my fellow Americans should go kill innocent people and die from explosives to establish an empire for another nation.

Abe, Thanks for bringing this issue to greater light. The potential risk of a dramatic upsurge in anti-semitic feelings and actions, in this era of near instantaneos and boad based communication, are real, even if remote. America is a marvelous place to live, but we are part of a world which , in large measure denigrates American values and holds us in resentful contempt. Matt

Jewish loyalty to the USA? 600,000 Jewish men served in the US armed forces in ww2. Jews love the USA and it is their right to support Israel. In fact there are many many non Jews who support Israel...they love the USA too. And many Jews and Non Jews know the real enemy is radical" Islam. Check the record of terror they have wreeked on the civilized world.

Blaming "The Jews" for pushing into war is not an innovation. In 1939-1941 there were similar voices that claimed "The Jews" were pushing the US into war with Nazi Germany. Germany, of course, was planning world hegemony, but "The Jews" had their own interests to serve: including, apparently, the slaughter of a third of their number, six million. Ah, those Jews are crafty.

Why are you surprised that there is anti-Semitism in liberal organizations like Harvard and from liberal former presidents like Jimmy Carter. Don't you know these people worship Europe, want to be seen as Europeans, want be approved by Europe, and embrace Europe's ant-Semitic sentiments? The question is why do American Jews continue to support these liberal people and institutions? I wish American Jews were more supportive of Israel.

European behavior is genetically anti-Semitic and pro-fascism. The supported Hitler in 1930’s and responsible for 55+ mln. lives vanished in WWII; they are coward and currently support islamofascism. Americans are interesting creatures, they are poor educated and profoundly ignorant, do not understand that muslims are “fifth column”, serve islamofascism interests and invaded America to convert US into muslim country and establish Shariah law. Americans do not know that muslims fought in WWII on Hitler’s side, killed many Europeans and Americans, as well as after WWII.
