Living with Rockets: Who is fooling who? Posted by Anav Silverman
Comments: 20
The other day in Sderot, I made an astonishing observation. I was walking from the office after a long day at work to catch some sleep when I noticed I was not walking alone. Usually the city is deadly quiet once the sun sets, as parents refuse to let children play outside in the dark. Families prefer to remain at home together after a long day of siren alerts and rocket explosions. High school kids don't ride around as much with the music blasting and teenagers don't walk around listening to their Ipods in case the 'tzeva adom', red color alert sounds. There's not much to do at night except maybe watch a movie and hope that Hamas rocket launchers decide to go to sleep, so that those us living in Sderot can relax just a little bit. In any case tonight I actually noticed people outside on the street. For the first time since I've come to work in Sderot in over a year, I am seeing moms walking around with their strollers and neighbors playing cards outside on the porch. A playground is full of kids shouting and playing -- that is one sight that makes me do a double take. Playgrounds are pretty much empty here in Sderot. Then I realized that this is the new playground that everyone is talking about -- the first playground in the world that is properly protected from rocket fire. How? There are heavy concrete tubes that kids can run to when the siren sounds for protection. Moms are finally feeling that it is safe enough to let their kids play at a playground. The kids look like they are having fun, what an ingenious idea. I spoke to Orna Cohen, a local Sderot mom, who's pretty happy with the playground. "I can finally let my grandkids outside to play in this new playground, when they come to visit me in Sderot," says Orna. "Usually I have to keep them pent up inside the house. It's nice to have a playground like this where the kids can play somewhat at peace, but it's obviously not a solution to living with the rocket fire." "I just want the rockets to stop for good so that we don't have to live for these little moments of quiet that are followed by terrible barrages of Kassams," says Orna. In any case, the children of Sderot definitely deserve some kind of break. About 70-94% of Sderot children now show signs of PTSD - post traumatic stress disorder. On another interesting note, at the Sderot Trauma Center, the director, Dr. Adriane Katz, reported that the number of cases of shock and panic among Sderot residents has only risen since the beginning of the year. "The ceasefire is giving families, especially parents and kids, a chance to breathe a little," says Katz. "This is not a real calm, however, because we know the rocket fire will resume soon" says Katz. "Most people anticipate another heavy round of rocket fire based on what happened in the last ceasefire." Indeed, over 300 Palestinian rockets were fired at Sderot from Gaza during the last Hamas ceasefire from November 2006 to May 2007. It's also fairly obvious to everyone that this ceasefire has not prevented Hamas from stockpiling its weapons. In the last ceasefire, Hamas stockpiled more weapons and rocket material, and trained more soldiers to attack our troops. They are doing the same thing now. On Hamas's Ezzedeen Al-Qassam Brigades website, a senior Hamas official states that the calm is considered a victory for Hamas, a chance "to recharge power." You can just visit their English website and see how the terrorist group continues to call for the destruction of the state of Israel, glorifying terrorists as 'martyrs.' If Hamas can't actively fire rockets, then the regime can passively do so by preparing for the next strategic round of rocket fire. Who is fooling who? Unfortunately and tragically, in the next round of events, it will be the residents of Sderot and the western Negev who pay a heavy price for this temporary calm. Although we are all enjoying this nice respite from the hell we've been experiencing this year -- over 2,000 Kassams and mortar shells have hit the western Negev since January, killing four people and wounding hundreds -- we know that the worst is being planned out now. Does the Israeli government even care? Or will we continue to play along as we usually do, while Hamas plans us all away? Until next time. . .see you at the new playground!

It's so sad the people have to live this way, especially children. I will pray for the people of Sderot.

i think that the citizens of sderot should consider the right to bear arms, as allowing them to make thier own rockets and start shooting them back at the other side. they have the right to defend themselves. i dont see why rockets should not be falling on both sides equally - after all are we not always speaking of proportionality?

Jay (poster #2) is absoluley right!! For every rocket the dreks of Hamas sends in S'derot...(or Israel)send ten back...indiscriminaltely, and if it kills Gazan civilians..so be it. In WW2 we USA and Allies killed millions of civilians...ask the people of Hiroshima and Berlin! "Hear oh Israel"...where is that 'never again" mentlaity?

more people need to read the Jerusalem Post in order to get a realistic picture of what is happening. There are bright spots in Israel that provide hope. Israel is not alone and the admonition to Joshua to "be strong and of good courage for the Lord is with you etc" still applies. What appears dead to us is not dead to G"d.

Dear Ms. Silverman;
I would like to give you one suggestion: give up your Israeli citizenship, move to Gaza and live with the Palestinian under Israel's military occupation. After a month or two, please let us know how many rockets have you launched at Sderot?

How about changing the name from Israel to Isn'treal.
Or renaming Kadima, the elders of Chelm.
Why are the Israelis silent, Why are their youth who've no chance for housing silent.
Why is not the electoral system changed before we get an upcoming taste of the same garbage with a differing flavour?
WHY WHY WHY

These tunnels are great for the kids. I'm glad that these kids have somewhere safe to hide. As a human, I have to also express a wish that Palestinian children had similar places to seek shelter. Israels bomb are far more powerful, and Israel can reach every inch of Palestine. How will these children grow up? From both sides of the wall the other side has the bad guys, and children can not understand why. Most adults can't even truly grasp the complexities of a battle that includes another point of view. It is always the other side, no matter where you are or what's been done in your name.

How about applying "Eye for an Eye" and adust it with the present situiation to " rocket for a rocket"
maybe that would change the situation ????

The problem in Israel is that there are no "united" Godly men to stand against the forces of darkness.. where is your God, O ye children of the One true Living God...? He is there, yet he will not move on your behalf because you have lost your faith and trust in him... you are diluted..
Help is only available to those who "fear in the Lord" and trust him... Righteous men must stand together in the presence of the Almighty and with "one voice, one heart" ask of him. We who are lowly, poor in spirit, and full of vanity give our children good things, how much more will God do for his...?

As a believing Christian, the Bible tells us that if we "bless" Israel, we will be blessed, but if we "curse" Israel, we will be cursed. I take this literally, whether on a persoanl level or an entire nation. Also, I am aware of the biased and slanted newsreporting which often defames Israel, when indeed, the defamation should be directed in the other direction of the surrounding countries. I am so sorry that you and your children must live under such unimaginable conditions, and pray for you and your country. May God protect you and keep you.

What good will concrete tubes in play grounds be when the rockets are armed with biological or chemical toxins? Why has the government not invested in one of several anti-rocket and anti-missile systems currently available? When the projectiles start raining from the north, from Gaza and possible from Iran or from a frieghter in the sea it will be late to purchase and set-up the sophisticated defensive systems.

Sandra in Arkansas, I wonder which news channel often defames Israel? I live in the US as well but I've never seen any news media that we have here in the states that defames Israel. Not once!! Are news media such as AlJazeera and al-Manar being broadcasted there in Arkansas?

II remember spending the summer in my safe room during the Second War with Lebanon. Though our city Katsrin in the Golan Heights only received a few direct hits by Katushas. I remember as an adult the terror I felt every time the air raid sirens went off (About 5 times a day) At night, across the valley, we could often see Zefat, Rosh Pinah, or Hatzor on fire. We felt so helpless because it seemed like our Israeli army was being restrained by our allies from responding to Hezbollah in the way they needed to to defeat the enemy. It seems like a similar situation with Hamas.

As an elementary school principal I am able to spend some time with our students at recess each school day. It is a time when the children can play and pretend and imagine. It sounds like the children of Sderot may not have much of a chance to do this - to be children. I will pray that God protects you and the children of your community and hope that He can put the right people in places of power to bring this insanity to a peaceful end.

Israel now has two fronts on its border, Gaza and Lebanon. Israel cannot wait to be attacked again. Must invade Gaza first to eliminate Hamas with a massive show of force stopping at nothin.
Following the capture of Hamas or killing or Hamas Political leaders, withdraw. This is a show of strength to Hezbollah and Iran. Either way there cannot be any security for Israel as long as Hamas exists. The world allowed Hezbollah to overrun Lebanon. Israel is on it own since the USA is too weak politically and militarily to intersede. The IDF must be prepared including the excellent Navy.

Several 155mm Howitzers pointed at Gaza should be a permanent feature of Sderot. There are also inexpensive devices that calculate the source of incoming rockets before they land, so the howitzers could put down patterns of shells on any source of rockets from Gaza within seconds. Then they could
"walk" the artillery fire up and down a few hundred yards to wipe out any terrorists who tried to take shelter. The promise of return cannon fire from large artillery would mean that no Gazans would allow rockets to be fired from their area. The problem of rockets from Gaza would be solved immediately.

Response to Dick in OK from Sandra: I am copying an url for an article which goes along with my statement concerning news reporting. http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1215331010688&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull
Also, I recommend a series of fiction/based on history books written by Boedie Thoene (I believe I spelled the author's name correctly-not here with me). Time after time, sympathy is evoked for the Palestinians, when indeed, they are the antagonists.
Click on "The princess of female martyrs". What is said is appalling but will not be heard in USA.

i voted a few minutes ago and said the u.s.a. would help israel and i was way off. but i can tell you something bush promised to keep the channel open if iran tryed to close it. i think if iran goes the biggest part of the trouble would be over. but let bush know when you get ready to do it. so he can have time to get the ships ready. but when you said that you would be alone God will never for sake you. he never has unless you for sake him first. i have a lot of faith in God and i will hold onto that for ever. so don't forget you god who lead you out of bondage with mosses. God gave u yours
