Living with Rockets: Welcome to the real world of Sderot, Jimmy Carter

A few eyebrows went up when Jimmy Carter visited Sderot yesterday on Tuesday April 15.

Sderot residents were relatively bewildered with Carter's visit to the rocket-shelled city, in light of his planned visit with the Palestinian terror organization, Hamas and its exiled leader Khaled Mashaal in Syria, later in the week.

"Today Carter comes to visit the city that Hamas terrorizes with rockets and later he will speak to the Hamas leaders who advocate this rocket fire," said one Sderot onlooker as Carter arrived with his security personnel into the city. "His visit to Sderot doesn't make any sense."

In fact, many of the residents in Sderot felt that the entire Carter visit was a joke on the residents.

"He looks like an old politician who is bored, looking for something to do," says Hamutal Ben-Shitrit, a local Sderot photographer who photographed Carter's visit at the Sderot Police Station, where the former US president viewed the hundreds of Kassams rockets stored away.

Indeed in the past two months, Carter, who is 83, has been the fourth US politician to visit Sderot.

"Sderot is becoming one of the top tourist attractions in the country for politicians visiting Israel," says Ben-Shitrit.

Meanwhile it is the residents in Sderot and the western Negev who are paying a heavy price for life under constant rocket fire.

Only a month ago, on March 26, Michelle and Claude Ktorza lost their store in a rocket attack. It was the second time in the past five months that their store, located in the center of the Sderot's market place, has been heavily damaged by a rocket explosion.

"We opened the store 30 years ago," says Claude. "Our financial future was set with this store. My wife and I are both in our late sixties and planned to retire in the next few years. Now with this last rocket explosion, all our future plans have been destroyed. Thirty years of hard work for future savings and a pension plan disappeared within those few seconds," finishes Claude.

His wife, Michelle, looks exhausted and strained, but she tries reassuring her husband that things will work out. "The first time our business was hit by a rocket, we had photos of the inventory to show the Israel Tax Authority exactly what had been in the store before it was hit."

"But this time around, we have no photos of the inventory or the items in the store" replies Claude. "We didn't think this would happen again. It will now be months before we receive any reparations for damages."

The rocket explosion occurred about a meter away from the Ktorza's store. Rocket shrapnel heavily damaged the store, destroying the goods on display, while fire from the explosion burned most of the inventory stored away.

Michelle does not know if she will be able to reopen the store again. "It all depends on the amount of financial reparations we receive from the government and it will be a while before the Israel Tax Authority lets us know."

Claude who is 68 and Michelle, 65, immigrated from France to Israel, and settled in Sderot in 1955. They were the generation which built Sderot, with dreams for a secure and stable future in the city.

"What are we supposed to do now?" asks Claude.

The Ktorzas' also have a daughter who suffers from a muscular atrophy living with them. Their son who suffered from the same condition, died a few years ago.

As Jimmy Carter leaves Sderot with the news crew and media following him, the Ktorza family sits distraught in their living room, wondering how their bills will be paid in the coming months.

Mr Silverman has stated rather naively that Carter's visit to Sderot "doesn't make any sense". Carter is on a peace mission and like any negotiator he has to consider arguments from both sides. Whether you , Mr Silverman and the residents of Sderot , like it or not, that is the potential way forward.

Carter is not on a peace mission. Carter is against israel - period.

Hamas' wanting to murder jews and annihilate the State of Israel is NOT an "argument". Nor is it an argument that the jews do not wish to be murdered. But that probably "doesn't make any sense" to you now does it, VH? Maybe you think the jews should give a little bit on their demand to remain unmurdered. I see you, Vinegar Hill and I know what you're all about. And so does everyone else.

VH: "Carter is on a peace mission and like any negotiator he has to consider arguments from both sides." This is a joke, right? Jimmy Carter is NOT on a "peace mission". He is NOT, nor can he be, a "negotiator" between Hamas and Israel. What Jimmy Carter is is a fool or a knave. Which are you, VH?

Jimmy Carter, an American no less, does not know the history of Israel and the Arabs even though he professes to be a Christian and a teacher of the Bible. For him to embrace a terriost orginization that is intent on destrying Israel shows just how ignorant he is and what an idiot he is for putting himself forward as a peace negotiator. He has nothing to offer nor can he offer anything but his absolute ignorance!

Carter was pushed around constantly by Islamofascists during his inept stint as president. I think he's got "the old time religion" and is trying to stir things up, to bring about Armageddon. So old and close to his end, he doesn't want to wait too long to be "called to heaven." He is a menace, and should be ashamed of himself.

As an American, I am outraged that Jimmy Carter is 'playing' diplomat with the terrorist organizations who want to destroy Israel!. He has NO business acting as if he is representing our country. I have expressed my feelings to various U.S. represetatives who are speaking out against Carter. Some have called for his passport to be revoked and I agree. He does NOT have the authority to speak for our government and he should not legitimize these murderers by having conversations with them. I support Israel and I urge my government to support Israel.

This is all about an old man's nostalgia. The much maligned ex-president, in his declining years, is merely revisiting the scene of the one and only significant accomplishment of his public life. The problem here is that in the intervening years, even that memory has become distorted. The accomplishments of Camp David had more to do with Sadat and Begin's courage than anything Carter could contribute. But let him have his last hurrah as he rides off into the sunset to consort with Hamas. Good riddance, old man.

Carter complains that the deaths of Palestinians are disproportionate. He should know that the hands of Hamas are dripping with the blood of every person killed on both sides. Stop the rockets, stop the killing.

Poor old Carter, he's really lost it. Imagine thinking he's contributing to peace by embracing the killers of Hamas, and laying a wreath at the grave of the ultimate corrupt Palestinian, Yassir Arafat. Too bad the Nobel committee can't revoke the peace prizes (a shanda!!!), awarded to the late Arafat and his bosom buddy, Carter!

I am thoughly ashamed of Jimmy Carter & apologize to Israel. He is like a puppet on a string, terroists pull the string & he reacts. We need to put a muzzle on all former Presidents to stop muddleying is other peoples business. "For those who have fought for it, Freedom has a taste the protected will never know." Thank You, E.J.K.

I met Jimmy Carter about 13 years ago and it was a big deal. After watching him and hearing him for the following years, I now know that he is sadly completely buying into a terrorists story. He just doesn't do the work to understand the history. The Sinai "Peace" deal was a joke, anybody can have peace when the land between them is larger than what they currently live on, on both sides! Peace Smeach, crap and we all know it.

Carter is deranged. Perhaps well meaning, but perhaps a serious anti-semite. He professes peace but he doesn't acknowledge, historical, philosophical, religious, and political realities. He may be a simple fool but he may be wasting precious time, focusing media attention on and giving legitimacy to the Hamas vermin. Let's banish Carter from this land forever. He's nothing but trouble. He should be jailed for this publicity stunt and his trip given ZERO media attention.
14  |  David S Bross, USA, Saturday Apr 19, 2008
Mr. Carter is neither ignorant nor naive. His writings and statements for many years demonstrate undisguised contempt for Israel and its people. He intentionally distorts historical fact to fit what can only be concluded is an anti-Israel agenda.
15  |  Erin USA, Saturday Apr 19, 2008
Hey, Just because Carter is on a peace mission doesn't mean he'll actually get anything done. I still remember his failed attempt to free our own hostages from the Iranian Ayatollah. Jimmy is a mouthpiece for the Democratic party. As long as he voices that Israel needs to compromise, and the Muslims need to be consoled, and we need to pull out of Iraq the Dems will keep sending him on *cough* PEACE missions... all at the expense of us Americans... and our Israeli allies!

I wonder if any rockets were launched while he was visiting. Did any empty cans of Billy Beer fall out of his SUV? Offer him some peanut farm land there, maybe he'll bite. Who knows, maybe he'll help world hunger that way...I LOVE ISRAEL!!!

President Carter is attempting to manage a peace agreement between Israel and Palestine. Why is it wrong to at least speak with Hamas. Without their approval THERE CAN BE NO PEACE AGREEMENT since they are in the political control. The man that the PM constantly refers to has not authority to sign any agreement so the efforts he expresses are only motions in futility. The whole world is praying for peace between Israel and Palestine. There is a ethnic problem that is fusing frustrations and will continue to be enhanced unless an agreement is reached soon.

What confirmation of ineptitude ! This " has been" is even an embarrassment to Canadians ! How utterly inappropriate that he should consort with Hams and to stoop so low as to lay a wreath at Arafat's tomb. It is time for America to reign in this misguided anti-semite. And as for his "Bible teacher" reputation, anyone at all knowledgeable of the Book will know that his familiarity with it must be abysmally poor ! Denny D. Edmonton, Alberta CANADA

Mr Clemons, you are as clueless and naive as Carter.

ANJ, US: To Vinegar Hill: After experiencing what he did, hopefully Sammy will pressure the Israeli government to defend Israel by dealing with the situation in Gaza instead of giving up any more land....land which belongs to the Jews and not the so-called "Palestinians."
Vinegar Hill, Madrid, Spain.: #2 Dan: You really are naive and childish in your retort. Consider what you have written. If your "HIT" takes place then it's bye bye to Israel and you won't be able to celebrate something better than a "picnic". I suggest you take some Valium before you write your next comment and then it may have some content of value.
Dan J USA: Sammy is a brave guy! Sderot is a minature of all of Israel under (G-d Forbid) attack. If Hamas et al Islamic terrorists start up again with the Kassams after Dec19th...then Israel should give Gaza such a "HIT" that it would make Hiroshima look like a picnic! There is no other answer..talking to these crocodiles of Islam is of no use! Ask the Japanese how WW2 eneded.
