Living with Rockets: Teaching the value of life

Last week, a group of 40 American tourists, from Michigan, California and Florida, came to visit Sderot. It was their first time in Sderot, and probably the first time that any one of them had visited a rocket-shelled region. The group was pretty cheerful, although several expressed their fear of actually being in the city.

I am always encouraged by groups like these who come to Sderot to show their solidarity with the shell-shocked residents. Having grown up in Maine all my life, I know that to come to a city like Sderot at a time like this, is not easy. The residents of Sderot, however, have been living through this rocket terror for the past seven years. Not a day goes by, where they can experience life as I knew it back in Maine - quiet, peaceful, and safe.

The first stop during the visit was at the Kassam rocket gallery, located in the Sderot police station, where hundreds of rockets that have hit Sderot and the surrounding area, are stored away. It is always a rather unnerving site. I can't think of one police station in the world that has this kind of exhibit - an exhibit which is updated almost on a daily basis with new rockets.

One of the police officers, Barak, explained to the group that there are several different Palestinian terror organizations in Gaza who launch these rockets over. Each organization colors their rocket differently. Hamas's Kassam rockets, for example, are identified by their red and green colors. Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of Fatah, color their rockets yellow with Arabic writing at the tail. Islamic Jihad rockets are identified by their red and blue colors.

After the rocket gallery, the group visited a local Sderot elementary school, Alon Madaim. The Americans presented the principal with board games for the students, to give them something fun to do during recess during periods of rocket fire when they must remain inside the protected classrooms.

We stood in the school library, as the principal of the school, Leora Fima, spoke about the added responsibility of making sure that her 150 students are both safe and psychologically well in her school. She said that many of the teachers had to learn to be both educators and psychologists, as students bring the stress and anxiety of living with rockets into class.

I think that the most powerful point was made when Principal Fima related to the American visitors the following story.

A few months ago, the President of Israel, Shimon Peres, came to visit the Alon Madaim school. During the visit, a fifth grader named Omer, who no longer studies in the school, approached the president with a question. "How can we stop the rocket fire, without hurting the children in Gaza?

Principal Fima explained that although the rocket fire has affected the children in her school - grades and exams scores have dropped - it has not changed their regard for innocent human life.

On the way back to boarding the bus, one elderly American commented to me, that he hoped that the children in Gaza were being taught to value the lives of the children in Sderot in the same way.

"We can only hope," I replied.

the droping of bombs and the lunching of rockets with a million and one unanswered questions. Any way, how would they that produce bombs sell and produce new ones if the old ones are still stocked or the rockets producers make more money through their sponsors. It all about the number of adults and kids killed all over the places solving no problems.

We know for a fact that the Palestinian schoolbooks teach them that Jews are evil and Israel shouldn't exist. Palestinian children's TV shows teach the same thing, while Israel is busy teaching coexistance. Peace will only happen when BOTH sides teach coexistence.I think it's counterproductive to give Israeli children false hope when it's obvious that the Palestinians have no immediate plans to change their children's education.

It seems odd that the author left out one other important murmurings by our DM Barak. He said that he would wait untill the polls were in his favor (i.e., higher than Olmert and Netanyahu's were), then he would remove the Labor Party from the government, thus forcing new elections. If this is a respectful way to conduct oneself? Has the leopard finally changed its spots or has the Kushite changed his skin? I believe not and this act of going against his word and you not mentioning it seems like a smoke screen to hide his true intentions. He indeed is the same old Barak! Enough said!

unless the israelis learn from history that the expulsion of jews from israel 2000 years ago was due the corrupt leadership unfortunately history will repeat itself.Olmert barak and their elk should be jailed for their disgusting actions. the people of sderot should enlist people from all over the world to protest in front of olmert's and barak's house and show their fury

ANJ, US: To Vinegar Hill: After experiencing what he did, hopefully Sammy will pressure the Israeli government to defend Israel by dealing with the situation in Gaza instead of giving up any more land....land which belongs to the Jews and not the so-called "Palestinians."
Vinegar Hill, Madrid, Spain.: #2 Dan: You really are naive and childish in your retort. Consider what you have written. If your "HIT" takes place then it's bye bye to Israel and you won't be able to celebrate something better than a "picnic". I suggest you take some Valium before you write your next comment and then it may have some content of value.
Dan J USA: Sammy is a brave guy! Sderot is a minature of all of Israel under (G-d Forbid) attack. If Hamas et al Islamic terrorists start up again with the Kassams after Dec19th...then Israel should give Gaza such a "HIT" that it would make Hiroshima look like a picnic! There is no other answer..talking to these crocodiles of Islam is of no use! Ask the Japanese how WW2 eneded.
