The Israeli Initiative: 'Then they said among the nations'

In October of 2001, Rehavam Ze’evi, the former Israeli Minister of Tourism was assassinated at a hotel in Jerusalem. It was under these devastating circumstances that I assumed the position of Minister of Tourism. The city centers had been abandoned, and the people of Israel found themselves victims of a terrorist war directed against the civilian population. The tourism industry was devastated, which only contributed to the already damaged economy. Every facet of life in Israel was difficult. Our spirits were broken, our streets were empty and our very existence was threatened. It was then, in one of our darkest hours that Christians stood their ground and came up to Jerusalem.

I will never forget Succot that year, when thousands of Christians marched in the streets of Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles. Shopkeepers who had been struggling to stay in business were amazed at this sight. They asked the Christian pilgrims how they had the courage to come to Israel at such a difficult time. The visitors responded that they had come to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles in fulfillment of the prophecy spoken by Zachariah, that all nations will come up to celebrate the feast of tabernacles (14:16). They also said that they refused to allow evil, specifically in the form of terrorism, to stand between them and Israel.

This act of bravery taught me to appreciate the deep kinship between Christians and the people of Israel. Since then, I have become actively involved in working with Christian groups who love Israel. I even, took on the role of chairman of the Knesset Christian Allies Caucus.

Twenty- eight years ago, when all other embassies were leaving Jerusalem, the International Christian Embassy opened its doors in Jerusalem, making a statement for all the world to see. The ICEJ hosts the largest annual tourist event in Israel, the Feast of Tabernacles. They have demonstrated almost three decades of faithful friendship to Israel without strings attached. They even require all Christians to sign a contract denouncing missionary activity before allowing them to participate as vendors at their events. We at the Knesset Christian Allies Caucus as well, do not hide our refusal to cooperate with Christians active in missionary work amongst Jews.

I am of course, aware of all the difficult baggage we carry from our shared past as Christians and Jews, from both our distant and more recent history. But we must recognize that our greatest threat is no longer coming from the Christian world but rather from radical Islam. Amalek has taken the form of incitement in mosques in Iran and Iraq. They have become the angry Muslim youth rioting in the streets of Damascus and Beirut screaming “death to the Jews”. Amalek is Ahmadinejad, who threatens to wipe Israel off the map. No one gave me permission to forgive the Christians for past aggressions on behalf of the people of Israel but we must recognize that they are our only allies in the struggle against radical Islam.

It is because of this that I call on Israel’s Chief Rabbis to not permit “the little foxes” to mislead you and “to spoil the vineyards; for our vineyards are in bloom”.  I expect our leaders, and particularly our spiritual leaders, to be able to differentiate between friend and foe. Between opposition to missionary activity amongst Jews and opposition based on xenophobia directed at all Christians that love Israel, especially when this opposition is based on pseudo-Halakhik and pseudo-historic justifications.

It is important to build good relations with Christian communities around the world, with their spiritual leaders and political representatives. We are not building these relations only to be Politically Correct. Of course, it is important for Israel to have strong support from a number of points of view– security, tourism, and economics and so on.  Yet, we cannot ignore that on a deeper level it is important to also be “Biblically Correct”. This new relationship carries us forward into a new stage in the life of our nation. A stage called for both by the Prophets and in our prayers: Israel as “A Light unto the Nations”, and Jerusalem as a Center of Influence for all peoples.  “When God brought back those that returned to Zion, we were like unto them that dream. . .  . then said they among the nations: 'God has done great things for them'."

As a Christian I support Israel because they are still God's chosen people and He has gathered them again from the nations to live in the land He gave them forever. I have a Jewish Messiah and read a Jewish Bible. Of course I support the existance of Israel! God will bless the world through them, as He has already done!

I am gratefull for the 'hot potato' that brought this article to my atttention. I wish there was some way for me to say I am sorry for the terrible things that have been done to the Jewish people by those who blindly called themselves 'christians'. Since there is not, I will continue to do good to the house of Israel whenever I can. I am trying to make a difference for the good, that is all I can do. Thank you to those are not offended by the Christians who love Israel and desire only her good. It does get discouraging to have your intentions misunderstood, but parenting is the same way and we don't just give up and walk away from our children do we? No. so those who love Israel will continue to do so by the grace of G-d. sincerely, linda

The Christians are only allies. That is the truth.

When will MK Elon be Prime Minister already? Why does he understand things and no one else does?

The ALMIGHTY and CREATOR who made the Heavens and the earth and all that are in them has Great Things in store for all Israel!

I feel sorry for the self-called "real Arab Christian" who does not understand his bible or his Jewish savior. God will fulfill all His promises to Israel and His Son will return to Jewish Jerusalem to rule and reign. Read Zechariah. my brother. Read Romans 11. You cannot love the Messiah and hate His people. We non-Jews have been grafted into Israel, not the other way around! And there ARE thousands of Jewish people who have recognized Messiah in Israel and around the world.

Working with Chrisians should be the top priority of the Foreign Ministry in Israel. The gov should put a lot of funding into the Christian allies Caucus.

As a Christian I must strongly disagree with "A real Arab Christian" (comment 4)Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, show G-d's eternal love for His chosen people. I suggest they go back and read their Bible cover to cover because they have missed some mighty important points.G-d looks after His people and blesses those who bless them. He also curses those who curse them.Looking at the Arab world today I would say they fall in the latter catagory.Enough said.

The word "Christian" has many definitions according to just as many "opinions". Given the history between Judaism and Christianity, does one really wonder at Rabbinical admonishions to be careful who your "friends" are? It only took four posted comments for the, all to often, "typical" Christian position toward Judaism to come out! My love for Israel and prayers for Jerusalem come from an understanding of Jewish people & respect of Jewish culture! I am her "friend" because I choose to be. The 43 years of study in religious philosophy & doctrins of world religions have no bearing on my personal commitment to Israel and her right to exist. I have studied Tanakh, Midrashim, Haggadah, The Bible, The Qur'an (including Shar'iah Law)& Sahihs, reading them all as well as using them to document "outside" comments on what they teach! Any Christian who actually reads and truly understands The Bible's position on Israel would do well to respect her! Alas, many who spew words about what they believe are parroting what they have been told by the ill informed.

B"H As an ex-Christian who converted to Judaism, I can attest to there being many genuine deeply G-d fearing, good and loving people among the Christian community. Huge things are happening spiritually with Hashem literally waking up some (not all) Christians to a sincere and deeper appreciation of the fact that the Jews are G-d's chosen people and that Israel in the Bible really means the Land as well as its people. Hashem is bringing many supportive Christians to Israel who are hungry to understand more about the Jewish understanding of the Tanach, without necessarily ceasing to adhere to Christian theology. While active missionizing may be an objective of a small minority of those coming, there is a very simple answer to it: an understanding of what the Tanach actually says as well as an observant Jewish lifestyle are a sure protection. Christian theology falls flat on its face once you actually read the quotes in Hebrew and in context from the Tanach that missionaries love to use to try to push JC. Observant Jews can have a far deeper and more fulfilling relationship with our Creator than most Christians could begin to understand. By the way, I became a Jew and left Christian theology behind me not simply because I could not accept Christianity rationally (though what the Tanach says had a clear bearing on my decision), but actually because I had the most incredible and unequivocal help from Hashem Himself who literally showed me the truth in the end after an amazing but also deeply difficult struggle and journey - that all there is is G-d and His infinite and incomprehensible mind could never begin to fit into a finite human body, and that I can never truly be apart from Him and I can relate directly with Him, no intermediary necessary. Personally, I am so much more whole and happy now as a Jew. But this is my own path to Hashem, and I respect the right of others to follow their paths to Him which may be different from my own. What matters in the end, whether Christian or Jew, is that we all put G-d first, love Him with all our heart, soul and mind, and seek to follow His ways with humility. Amazing things are happening right now, if you only have the eyes, and the trust in Hashem, to see them........

I have studied the history of Israel. I know that you all are G-d's chosen people even in this day and time. I am sure all of you have heard the prophesies of the coming Messiah. Jesus is and was that Messiah. It is in your history books (Torah). G-d sent a Messiah so that we all could have a chance at heaven. G-d is a gracious and mighty creator and he doesn't want even the gentiles to parish. He did not give us the gift of being his chosen people so he made another way for the gentiles to come unto him...and that was through his Holy son Jesus Christ making the ultimate sacrifice. He is the first fruits, he is the best of the lambs. I wish you all well and for blessings of the Heavenly Father to continue upon Israel.

To all those 'committed Christians' who think that G-d has finished with His chosen ones, let me remind you that Romans 11 in the Brit Chadasa makes it perfectly clear that He has not. He cannot revoke His promises for His loved ones otherwise He wouldn't be G-d. Replacement theology is as old as time and recognised only by the blind.

To #4, you may be a real Arab, but a real Christian? Real Christians love Jews and Israel whether they believe in Jesus or not. You sound like a real Catholic or Greek Orthodox.

What did the Christian Crusaders do to the Jews when they captured Jerusalem. They killed them. Did Muslims kill Jews when Muslims ruled Jerusalem? No, they did not.
