US President George W. Bush arrived in Israel today for a historic visit and I for one am very nervous. I am nervous not because I think he has any bad intentions but rather because I believe his Israeli counterparts do.

A couple of weeks ago, Israel was betrayed by one of our own in front of the whole world. On September 10, at a formal dinner hosted by America's Ambassador to Israel, Ha'aretz editor David Landau sold our country out to the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice. In his fanatic rant, Landau called Israel a "failed state" and appealed to have the US "rape Israel', forcing her into submission by requiring a US- imposed settlement and humiliating us in front of the entire world.

I am appalled, disappointed and ashamed by the inexcusable comments that David Landau made to a member of a foreign government. I am also greatly distressed by the lack of public response to his words. Landau does not represent even a percentage of the public opinion in Israel and had his tirade been covered in the Hebrew media, the Israeli public surely would have protested.

Israel is not a failed state. Israel is a modern miracle, born out of the ashes of the Holocaust, forced into immediate conflict and made to fight for our very existence. G-d returned the land of Israel to the Jewish people and He is facilitating the return of the exiles before our very eyes.

The problem in Israel is not that David Landau felt it necessary to betray his country and heritage to a diplomat from a foreign country. The problem is that with the exception of Makor Rishon, not one Hebrew media outlet reported this atrocity.

This is a symptom of a greater problem in our country. This is why voting percentages are down, a corrupt government is allowed to stay in power and the Israeli population at large has thrown up its hands in defeat. This is why no matter how many initiatives have failed based on the concept of land for peace; our government continues to push these ludicrous plans.

The leftist media in Israel continues to reward coverage only to those pushing plans that will ultimately destroy our country. Anyone who stands up and speaks out against committing national suicide is a considered a fanatic or an extremist. Just look at the facts. The nationalist camp has predicted every disaster from the Lebanon withdrawal, to Oslo and Disengagement but no one from the left has ever come out and apologized for these mega blunders. In fact these same politicians are still running the country. How is that possible?

The answer is that these plans have also been the agenda of our media. Go back to the coverage of disengagement and how they hailed Sharon as a hero or how they spoke of the brilliance of Oslo. In more recent events, look at the media's new darling; the Annapolis conference and the emphasis that has been placed on dividing Jerusalem.

Now let's go to the case of David Landau. This incident is a national disgrace. It has been reported all over the world but the Hebrew media has completely avoided it. The silence is deafening. In fact, the vast majority of Israelis don't even know it happened.

Israel needs to wake up and realize that we are under attack. From outside and from within. We need a national information campaign to let our fellow brothers and sisters know that things can be better. Israelis need to hold their heads up high and be proud again. To this end, I have launched the Israeli Initiative and worked to find new and exciting methods to penetrate the Hebrew media, including a trailer I released entitled "The Last Fanatic". I believe that the average Israeli loves this country and sees it as a great source of pride. We need that spirit to embolden the entire country to speak out and declare that no one will rape Israel. This is the message that we need to send to President Bush and I believe he will stand by us if we do.

Kudos to MK Elon for standing up for the Israeli public. It is about time our politicians speak the truth. You have my vote.

2  |   gil, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

i like Benny Elon!

3  |   Dan Israel, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Haaretz is an embarassment. Thank G-d Jpost is still fair and balanced. Way to take Landau to task MK Elon. Kol Hakavod!!!

4  |   Lynn, Canada, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Mr. Elon is right, of course. I find it incomprehensible that Israelis, who live in such a tiny, vulnerable piece of land, cannot or will not see the danger of leftist policies and their extraordinarily corrupt government. May G-d open the eyes of the people to see what is truly happening. May He give them the resolve to oust their current government. May He give them the wisdom to realise that the US is not in a position to be able to guarantee their security if they continue to give away their land to their enemies.

5  |   Michael - 'Tel Aviv', Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

I spend a lot of time reading the newspapers and I didn't see David Landau's shameful piece!

HaAretz is of course well known for its continuing support of despised groups like Peace Now, Machsom Watch and others.

Groups that are made up of total non-achievers whose only claim to fame is betrayal!

Rice has now come out of the closet and makes statements such as .. "her childhood in the segregated U.S. south helped her to understand the plight of Palestinians and the fear felt by Israelis".

No wonder she and David Landau resonate!

6  |   Victor, Beer Sheva, Israel, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Israel suffers from tyranny of the leftist press and a vicious cycle which sustains its monolpoy on the truth. David Landau is the editor of Ha'aretz and it is only natural that he will not publish his own dastardly remarks lest he draw condemnation and be shown up as the Israel bashing, self hating, post Zionist he really is. He must be taken to task by other newspapers or else by one of his own "token" rightists. It would be best to expose him on Mabat or a prime time talk show, but the left controls the public owned media as well.

7  |   Jeff - USA, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Apparently Mr. Landau has had quite the history of pushing this. In an article posted at the following link [ Link to page ] mr Landau has been pushing this agenda since the 70's. I as a Christian in the U.S. I TOTALLY disagree with the giving of land for Peace and the thought of giving Jeruselam (even a tiny portion) makes me sick to my stomach. What I find truly disturbing is that he still calls Israel's presence "an occupation". Thank you for your terrific and wonderful thoughts on this Mr. Elron, may G-d bless your efforts and G-d bless Israel! Kol Hakavod

8  |   Leo Puhovich, Kazakhstan,Almaty, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

So many years Jews have been
persecuted that some of us began to despise their own nation. These individuals think I am not as bad as all Jews, I am much better. Therefore, I should criticise Israel. Such a trend is known not only in Israel but in the US, where to castigate Israel is rife.
I think that the current government in Israel is the source of such journalism. Strong leaders beget brave nations, and in the oipposite, the failures at the helm create Landaus.

9  |   Sharon, Jerusalem, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Landau's statements nauseate. His portrayal of Israel as a state that needs to be rescued from itself is deplorable. What Israel does need to be rescued from is a leftist judiciary that has colluded with the media to force post-Zionist, defeatist views down the throats of the Israeli public. A viable democracy depends on an informed public. I pray MK Elon and the Israel Initiative succeed at expanding the public policy dialogue to include views other than those of Ha'aretz.

10  |   BenZIon, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

To understand the actions of the Israel "government" and this Landau's remarks:
2000 years ago the Talmud predicted that a Sign that the Days of the Final Redemption have arrived is that Chutzpah will flurish, the young will insult the elders, and worst, the descendants of the Gentile Mixed Multitude that left Egypt with the Jews and built the Golden Calf, would rule Israel. So we see the prediction has come true. But it appears few Jews are aware of this.

11  |   daniel, Amsterdam, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

I talk with a lot of different people about the middle east and I can tell you one thing:

Those who hate Israel, read Ha'aretz.

12  |   Marlon, India., Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Inspite of the negative comments, coming from within or without Israel, against the land of Israel AND whatever happens today, tomorrow or after, rest assured Mr. Elon, that after the whole world comes crashing down, Israel will still be standing. TRUE ISRAEL will continue to stand firm in the promises given by THE ALMIGHTY, THE CREATOR to your fathers of old.

13  |   David Katcoff, Jericho, Vt, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Very sane man. Too bad he's not running the country, or the media.

14  |   Jeremy, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

MK Elon,
When you are Prime Minister, please remember to prosecute these traitors. You should start a list.

15  |   Robert Mendez from Florida, USA, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

I am in total agreement with the Israeli initiative.
Although I wasn't born in Israel, I feel very much a part of it and feel it is also my home land. I pray everyday for the peace of Israel and the great city, Jerusalem. I pray the Israeli
initiative will go foward and that our president
will support it and reconize its value.
May God bless your work. I LOVE ISRAEL.
Shalom!

16  |   Susannah, London, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Unfortunately, David Landau's comments are typical of the mainstream journalists in Israel .It is disgusting that he could so debase Israel by begging Condoleeza Rice into 'raping' it into submission. In a democracy, people are of course, able to criticize anything that they please, including the State of Israel, but the trouble with the left is that they are so blinded with hatred and criticism of Israel, that they never find anything positive to say and solely focus on what they perceive to be the enormous 'injustices' which they accuse Israel of.

17  |   Kevin Greenfield, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Mr Elon, you give us hope. G-d bless you and give you strength. I'm also offended by Landau's statements and distressed that there was no national reaction to them. If this is due to lack of Hebrew media coverage, maybe something could still be done: people could distribute Hebrew translations of the report in every synagogue, in street corners, in shopping malls. And particularly, let's disseminate those statements in the western media. Americans need to know what the Israeli left is really about.

18  |   Ron, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Hear hear!!! If I were Israeli I'd vote NU/NRP (but since I'm American I'll vote Republican) ;-)

19  |   Joseph . E @ Givatayim - Israel, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

The Left abuse , violate and exploit the 'Freedom of Speech' to undermine Israel` right to exist as a Jewish State , and to undermine the territorial sovereignty of the Jewish State

21  |   BJL, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Kol Hakovad Benny Elon-

Everything the Left has done to bring peace has brought just the opposite. It brings terror, missiles and more war. Why? Because weakness is sickening to the enemy. Like a weak animal, they seek to finish it off.

Only a strong Israel who asserts her right to the Land and defeats her enemy conclusively will bring lasting peace. Only borders to the Jordan, Erertz Israel will bring lasting peace.

22  |   Zelda, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Finally some sense in a country that seems to have gone mad. This is why I voted NU/NRP and will continue to. "The Last Fanatic" is also an effective tool. Please let's stop hating ad destroying ourselves, and instead let's adopt the kind of internally-motivated dignity that MK Elon represents.

23  |   d, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

We love you Benny!

24  |   massaraksh, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

What took you so long? How come Mr. Landau isn't tarred and feathered? This is a very sad time not only for the Israelis but for all Jews as well.

25  |   Rick US, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Excellent. Many more Israelis - and their 'politicians' should be taking similar positions. Where are they?

26  |   MICHAEL DAVID TEL AVIV, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

I MET MK ELON YEARS AGO AFTER A TEL AVIV COFFEE SHOP BOMBING. I KNOW HE IS CONCERNED ABOUT ISRAEL'S SAFETY,HE DOSN'T GO FOR ALL THE SMOKE AND MIRRORS PUSHED AT ISRAEL IN THE PEACE FOR LAND SKEEMS. HE'S A LEADER OF THE PEOPLE ,FOR THE PEOPLE. OPPONENTS CALL HIM RADICAL, I SEE HIM AS LOGICAL. MK ELON IS A REFRESHING FACE OF A DAY GONE BY, WHEN ISRAEL ONLY CARED ABOUT ISRAEL'S SURVIVAL,NOT PLEASING A U.S. PRESIDENT WHO'S ON A QUEST FOR GREATNESS. PRIME MINISTER ELON SOUNDS GREAT IN MY EARS.

27  |   Jeremy Hayman, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Mr Landau's lack of self-pride reminds me of the tale of a train traveller who when asked by the conductor to present his ticket was told: "You don't belong on this coach". When the traveller protested, he was informed: "This is a third class coach - your'e ticket is a First Class ticket"!

Come on Mr Landau, cut out emulating the self-hatred of your co-religionist Torquemada forebear. Yes, a Jewish inquisitor!

May Israel, and the Jewish People be saved from the psycho pathology emanating from our own ranks.

28  |   CC--USA, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Benny Elon, is the Israeli leader with the wisdom needed to lead Israel out of the mess that the current adminstration has made for Israel. It's good to know that there is an alternative to the bungling, weak Olmert types. David Landau should be prosecuted for his crass, traitorous remark begging for Israel to be raped. The Ha'aretz is a worthless piece of paper except for use as a fish wrapper. I wish you success, Mr. Elon.

29  |   Joseph . E @ Givatayim - Israel, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Nations demand loyalty to the state from their un-elected and elected officials against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

30  |   Joseph . E @ Givatayim - Israel, Wednesday Jan 09, 2008

Figure out the US citizenry reaction should US Congress members voice their support to UBL , willingness to hand out Texas and California to Mexico sovereignty , support Alaska independence ,
and the secession from the union of Lakota Native Americans who inhabit large chunks of the states of N. & S.Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana .
"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us"
As they said this last month, Dec. 19th, 2007.

31  |   David Susen - U.S.A., Thursday Jan 10, 2008

Do not forget your greatest non-jewish allies in the world, the evangelical Christian community. These people love Israel and the Jewish people more than can be expressed. Our Adonai is Jewish and we have seen Him cry for the Jewish people.

We love you all and Sha-alu Shalom Yerushâlâim

32  |   Sharon, Thursday Jan 10, 2008

LOUDER, BENNY!!

33  |   David from Jerusalem, Thursday Jan 10, 2008

If the two-state solution is such a great idea in the first place, why do all the world leaders stay at the King David Hotel and shut down half of Jerusalem when they visit? Why don't any of them split their time between Jerusalem and Ramallah? If the PA is such a great government, why must Israelis be the only locals providing security . . . at a cost of $1million per visit? I wonder this as helicopters fly over my apartment and my wife shop for Shabbat at the Ben Yehudah shuk until after President Bush finishes his visit to Ramallah.

34  |   Carlos Murphy Australia, Thursday Jan 10, 2008

Israeli's are known world wide for being gauche, brash, loud.
But this Landau imbecile takes the cake,This is Butt
clenching embarrassment,The thing is what are you going to do about this, will any of you get off your butts and go and picket Haaretz, till this bum is tossed out.

35  |   Giulio Enzo Nahum, Rome, Italy, Thursday Jan 10, 2008

Most comments here are just useless adulation. The only intelligent and useful comment in my view is No. 34 by Carlos Murphy from Australia.
The bottom line is: Benny Elon you are right of course, but what are you and the people in Israel (hopefully the majority, but I would not hold my breath) who think like you are going to do now? Go and picket that rag of Haaretz and demand that the traitor who wishes for Israel to be raped be kicked out. If the Israelis are not prepared to defend Israel then tell them to prepare the suite cases and hand the keys to the country to Abbas and Hanyeh!

36  |   Flora, Thursday Jan 10, 2008

Perhaps someone should compile a list of all those self-hating Jews in Israel and the world. Then they could be publicly shamed. There's nothing like knowing who the enemy is. But that doesn't answer the question - why do they do it? And why do some of them live in Israel, adding insult to injury? More power to you Benny, good luck and shalom.

37  |   Velvel USA, Thursday Jan 10, 2008

Mr. Benny Elon, you are a true Jewish hero. Please keep fighting for real peace. I am thrilled to see that Senator Brownback supports and endorses your peace plan. Please speak to more US senators and representatives and get the word out into the US and Israel so that people will stop being fooled by the swindling of "palestinian" nationalism and the plo terrrorist thugs who run that charade.

38  |   Sarah B.Morris, Gush Ezion, Thursday Jan 10, 2008

You are soo right!

39  |   Jane, Jerusalem, Thursday Jan 10, 2008

How can we expect international leaders not to be blinded to the fact that the Jewish presence in Judea and Samaria, as in Tel Aviv, help protect the State of Israel from Palestinian terrorism by ensuring a Jewish presence there, if our own opinion shapers and journalists express such disgusting and crude desires such as the 'rape' of Israel? David Landau's comments show that despite being the editor of one of Israel's leading papers, he is clueless when it comes to suggesting possible realistic solutions for solving the Arab-Israeli conflict, amongst which the 'rape' of Israel will not help.

40  |   Clusiana, Louisiana USA, Friday Jan 11, 2008

Thanks for this opportunity to post. There will never be a peace for Israel as long as there is radical Islam. As long as there are leaders like President Geo. Bush and Condi Rice. President Bush is legacy building. Legacy building at the expense of Israel's survival. I'm ashamed of this. Then Israel has leaders who would abandon their own country's safety for "peace." And Landau. Not an elected official commenting in the most treasonous words about his own country. Please cling to G-d. Cling to your faith. And protect your country. NO divided Jerusalem. Tell Geo. Bush to go fish somewhere.

41  |   Matt Hoffman, Boston, Friday Jan 11, 2008

Agreed, Mr. Elon! Israelis need to hold their heads up high - they have much to be proud of.

42  |   JKF, Ottawa ,Canada, Friday Jan 11, 2008

An ethically poor individual, has let us all down, he claims to know much, but it is very evident, by his action, that he understand very little. It is painful to see him in a position of leadership in a paper. Have all, who have been offended, stop supporting Ha'aretz; boycott their services; demand the board answer as to why is it that this individual is still associated with their paper. Peacefull civil action, especially not purchasing any services, from an offending organization, goes a long way in resolving such issues.
Mr. B. Elon my respect and regards.

43  |   David E. Kaus America, Friday Jan 11, 2008

Mk Elon will not be pushed around by the likes of Rice or Bush, or those who side with them in the Israeli government. Just who is Bush to come to Israel to demand that she give up her land, the East Bank, and give it to the Arabs, for another Arabian state. Has everyone forgotten the lie of the term "Palistenian," or "west bank." Let's start the process back to truth by using the correct terminorlogy, for as those who promote the lie of "Palistenians," and "west bank," well know, terminology sets the agenda. Once you cave in with terminology the slide down hill begins.

44  |   Marsha - Stamford, CT, USA, Friday Jan 11, 2008

Benny, you are so right. PLEASE do something. PLEASE, tell us what we here in chutz laaretz can do!

45  |   Pastor Duke Bennett Ohio, US, Friday Jan 11, 2008

I can't believe what my country is doing. This foolishness must be stopped. "Land for peace", is not what the Palestinians want, they want the destruction of Israel and they and anyone that supports these rediculous ideas must be stopped. It is not Olmert's land to give away, this land was promised to Abraham and his decendents by G-d, not to Muslim terrorists. I don't know what else to do but I am furious. Please, if there is anything that I, or we can do here in the US, please let us know.
G-d Bless,

NO concessions of "land for peace". "When a man's ways please The LORD, He maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him". Be bold, be courageous little "giant-slayer". Keep your original deed, contracts and give up none of your land (re-)taken fairly in pure and self-defensive battle!

47  |   Barney Offenberg USA, Friday Jan 11, 2008

Please my fellow Jews,I am a Jewish American.I Beg you Children of Abraham, Do Not let the United States Push Israel Into a "false" peace treaty! Open your eye's, Smiling faces tell lies!

48  |   GL Berlin, Friday Jan 11, 2008

The Jews have returned to the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, according to Bible prophecy. No ruler of any country can alter that fact. And no Bible prophecy has indicated this return will be followed by another diaspora. The Jews are back to the land promised to their Fathers for good. Only a fool tries to go against with will of the Lord, of whatever nation. See Psalm 2.

51  |   Debra, Saturday Jan 12, 2008

As an American Christian, not terribly well versed in the Middle East, what you and others like Ms. Glick are saying seems blatantly obvious: Palestinian leadership really wants to destroy Israel and all these 'negotiations' are just a way of faking out the naive West and world community. One doesn't have to look terribly hard to understand this.

Olmert's actions seem insane and suicidal. So either he and his ilk (like Landau) are so Godless their minds are warped and deceived and/or they know damned well what they are doing.

52  |   John Manitoba, Canada, Saturday Jan 12, 2008

I will pray for you Benny. At last one righteous vexed soul who dares to speak up. I can't believe that all Israel stands silently by as their God-given land is given away for nothing. If they truly knew where this was leading them, they would rise up in revolt of the current govt. I beg you, don't give in but trust in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!

53  |   C. Smith, Saturday Jan 12, 2008

If I remember correctly, President Bush did not do very well in school:

G = the number of square miles in Gaza
W = the number of square miles in the West Bank
R = the average number of Qassams, mortars, and other hostile projectiles fired per day from Gaza
X = the average number of impacts per day in Israel

X = (W/G) * R + R

* Note: the conservative estimate given by this formula is only valid during the “Peace Process”

54  |   Mark Katzman, San Francisco, Saturday Jan 12, 2008

Todah rabah, for your sentiments. They are shared by me. I can't speak for other Jews because I never would've believed that after the holocaust Jews would so readily sell out the miracle that was and is the establishment of the state of Israel. But I guess when one is well fed you don't complain about hunger! If those Jews who sell Israel out were on a train bound for Auschwitz they'd be crying, "if only there was an Israel." Thank you for your stand.
