Double Standard Watch: Who's making these Nazi-like statements? Posted by Alan Dershowitz
Comments: 61
Here is a multiple choice quiz: 2. Who described the establishment of the state of Israel as a "historical, moral, political calamity," blames the existence of Israel for putting the entire world in "peril" and condemns "American Jews" for the "shame" of failing to denounce Israel? 3. Who has said that Israel may eventually cause the "end of the human race" by means of global warming? The answer to the first question is Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and himself the former head of the MK Gandhi Institute for NON VIOLENCE at the University of Rochester, who recently wrote those Nazi-like words in a widely circulated blog. He subsequently apologized for including "all Jewish people", implying that it is only Israel and most Jewish people who are "the biggest players" in the culture of violence that is eventually going to destroy humanity. Not Islamic terrorists, not nuclear sabre-rattling Iran - but "the Jews!" If you answered Hitler, that is understandable since Hitler made very similar accusations. Hitler, like Gandhi, accused the Jews of causing all the problems in the world. The answer to the second question is Tony Kushner, who is thoroughly ignorant about the history, morality and politics of Israel's establishment as the result of the United Nations division of the contested area into two states: one for the Palestinians and one for the Jews. The Jews accepted the two-state solution and declared statehood. The Arab nations rejected the two-state solution and declared a genocidal war against the Jewish state. But you wouldn't know that by listening to Kushner. If you mistakenly believed that the correct answer was Iran or the Hamas Charter, that too is understandable, because both have made the same point. The answer to the third question is Clare Short, former Secretary of State for International Development in the UK Labor government, who has said that Israel will cause the end of the human race because it diverts the world's attention from the problem of global warming. Not China, the United States or other large polluters, but tiny Israel, which is one of the most environmental-friendly nations of the world! These are highly regarded individuals who have large followings around the world. Yet they mimic the most despised group in modern history - the Nazi Party - in blaming the world's ills on "the Jews", the Jewish state and "American Jews." If this were not so dangerous and tragic, its patent ignorance would almost be humorous. It reminds me of the old joke about Hitler making a harangue in Nuremberg, during which he shouted out his favorite rhetorical question: "Who is causing all the problems of the world?" A voice from the back of the crowd shouted out, "the bicycle riders." A shocked Hitler asked "Why the bicycle riders?" The voice responded, "why the Jews?" It's easy to scapegoat "the Jews" or the Jewish state for all the world's problems. One would expect, however, that in light of the history of Nazism, people like Gandhi, Kushner, and Short would reflect more deeply before issuing this modern day version of the Blood Libel. Shame on them.

YOU SHOULD REFLECT ON ABANDONING USING THE LAW FOR YOUR PERSONAL BENEFIT AND AGRANDIZEMENT. THE JEW IS SUPPOSED TO BECOME A PEOPLE OF PRIESTS AND A HOLY NATION AND YOU'RE A BUSINESS MINDED INDIVIDUAL. BEFORE CRITICIZING OTHERS, LOOK AT YOURSELF FIRST. HUMBLE YOURSELF IN FRONT OF THE LORD.

The third statement is nonsense since Israel plays a minor role. As far as your arguments go Dr. Dershowitz, yes I understand the need for a Jewish state, but as I age I also feel sympathetic toward the Palestinians. Sure, a two state solution is fine for someone without a state. It means, some state, instead of no state. But for the other party it equates to losing half of their state. If I came and claimed your whole home and after 60 years showed willingness to make painful concessions and give you back half of it, would you find that fair? Nonetheless, the column was an interesting read.

I think Israel is afraid of Iran ..for reasons of controling the mid east...
Would Israel invlove the world in a world war to distroy it's rival for business & social control of the mid east...I believe the answer is yes!
Sadly..American's are un-informed about the realtiy...billions & billions of aid to Israel...a small spot on the world map..What about Africa, South America, etc. Why Why Why ?
Why the effort to get all Jews back in Israel this year?
Does this make me a anti Jewish person for asking questions?..in this world ..it appears so.

we must be in their faces and show them to be the racists, anti-semites, ignorant of history, philosophy, theology and ant-humanist that they are.
as for this mister ben dayan, i cannot accept that he is a real person but a useful idiot as the communists used to call their disimformation agents. also his view is so distorted he can be described as out of touch with reality.

Thanks Dershowitz for focusing on these Jew haters. We need to stress again,
The League of Nations Mandate of Palestine, and article 80 of the UN charter, laid down the Jewish legal right to settle anywhere in western Palestine, a 10,000 square mile area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, an entitlement unaltered in international law and valid to this day. . US Congress unanimously the Mandate for Palestine on July 24, 1922. Tony Kushner claim for illegal Jewish settlements has no legal basis, and represent his personal animosity of the Israeli Jews.

When there is none to hate - hate the Jews. What's new? Nothing... Nothing at all! From my experience, we ought to take sides in this hateful world. And I chose mine own one, whether it is right or wrong, moraly or otherwise. Because, my side is always wrong in the eyes of the entire world... So, hell with them. We shoulf be only worried about us, the Jews, and be united as one people.

...Ely, Doron you are right... Sin'at Hinam - this is the only thing that scares me to death, not the Arabs, not the Russian or even Chinese. Failure to learn from our own bloody history, that's scares me more than any proclamation by Ahmadinajad and those alike. I wish HaShem will make us realize this before we go distinct...

Part 1
Rick in Florida:
Asking questions would not make me think you are anti-Jewish, but your answers could. What reason do you have to believe that Israel would cause a world war for business or social control of the mid-east? How could Israel, a country with a miniscule population compared to the rest of the region ever hope to have such control? How could they possibly exert it? If there was a world war, given the statements and actions by all its enemies, wouldn't Israel be likely to suffer tremendously?

By saying you think Israel would do such a thing, I assume that you have not really thought it through, and that you are making such a statement based on emotion, or in other words, you have already decided that Israel is evil and wrong. One could easily infer from that that you are anti-Jewish.

I'm amazed at the ignorance of history demonstrated here. The Balfour Accords (in 1922) set aside the transJordon and the area between the Jordon R. and the Med for the Jews. The Arabs (now using the incorrect monicker "palistinians) were given the other 80% of the historic "Jewish homelands". The British were to safeguard the Jewish lands with the "British Mandate". In 1948, the UN took another 10% of historic Israel and gave it also to the Arabs. This was not enough, so the Arabs declared war on Israel. They lost, 3times! So the Arabs now are waging a demographic war against Israel.

For generations upon generations Jews lost everything. It happen in Arab/Muslim countries. Take these assets and give it to the Palestinians. The Muslim countries love the current situation because it diverts attention to the conflict of the palestinians instead of looking at their totalitarian regimes. Check the conditions of the Palestinian refugee camps in the Arab countries, it is deplorable . Instead of helping these refugees, the Arabs treat them as animals in a Greek Colosseum. Muslims have so much money due to oil, they push the Palestinian cause and it became a world issue.

To Rick FL
Israel sits on a geographical area connecting Africa, and Europe facing the sea. It is also, the only democratic country in a large area. Also, it does contribute in many areas to the world economy. If it was not for the money of the Arab/Muslim countries you would hear about this conflict. All that wasted money, what are some Arab/Muslim produce, terrorists? Countries in Africa are starving, are you aware of the particulars?

Even you are not accurate in the description of the establishemtn of the mordern Israel, by saying that "the United Nations division of the contested area into two states: one for the Palestinians and one for the Jews." There were no known "Palestinians" at the time, they were called Arabs. Palestinians should be called Jews living in what was known as "Palestine" as well as Arabs.

Israel is the only democracy in the Middle east as the Jews among the nations.
No matter what will israel do to promot peace
as long as we are there in full existence there will be Anti jewish anti semitic actions. i can not imagen what will happend to the jews around the world if g-d forbid israel was no more tomorow....
you then will see all the forms (about 7)of anti-semitism actuly being impemented.
The destruction and genocide of the jewish People.

Matthew G #5, as you age you must also become increasingly senile. The "Palestinians" did not have a "state" at any time, before or after the UN resolution. In fact, most of today's middle eastern countries did not have a "state" until the British and French created boundaries, and later organized into nation-states, well after the Ottoman empire collapsed. The arbitrary boundaries of British Mandate Palestine were intended for a Jewish homeland. Only made a state with Israel's declaration of Independence.
20 | Mark, Tuesday Feb 05, 2008
To Post # 5, Matthew G - Every issue can be argued from two sides. So, the fact that you are able to make a case for the Palestinian Arabs is no surprise. But, please note that there have been Jews in the land of Israel continuously from the days of the Bible. Why is it that they do not have a claim to the land? It is not like the Jews left voluntarily. As you seem to tacitly acknowldge, any issue can be argued from either side. Isn't a two-state solution then the most reasonable?
21 | Velvel, Tuesday Feb 05, 2008
Hey Rick in Florida, go ahead and ask the quesitons, but they are misinformed questions and the "information" you interject them with is incorrect. "billions and billions" to Israel and not to other countries? Reality check. USA has been arming Arab nations and enemies of Israel for years. Israel doesn't get nearly as much money from the USA as the arab nations. We Jews have always wanted all Jews back in Israel as part of our theological beliefs dating back over 3000 years
