Double Standard Watch: Who's making these Nazi-like statements? Posted by Alan Dershowitz
Comments: 63
Here is a multiple choice quiz: 2. Who described the establishment of the state of Israel as a "historical, moral, political calamity," blames the existence of Israel for putting the entire world in "peril" and condemns "American Jews" for the "shame" of failing to denounce Israel? 3. Who has said that Israel may eventually cause the "end of the human race" by means of global warming? The answer to the first question is Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and himself the former head of the MK Gandhi Institute for NON VIOLENCE at the University of Rochester, who recently wrote those Nazi-like words in a widely circulated blog. He subsequently apologized for including "all Jewish people", implying that it is only Israel and most Jewish people who are "the biggest players" in the culture of violence that is eventually going to destroy humanity. Not Islamic terrorists, not nuclear sabre-rattling Iran - but "the Jews!" If you answered Hitler, that is understandable since Hitler made very similar accusations. Hitler, like Gandhi, accused the Jews of causing all the problems in the world. The answer to the second question is Tony Kushner, who is thoroughly ignorant about the history, morality and politics of Israel's establishment as the result of the United Nations division of the contested area into two states: one for the Palestinians and one for the Jews. The Jews accepted the two-state solution and declared statehood. The Arab nations rejected the two-state solution and declared a genocidal war against the Jewish state. But you wouldn't know that by listening to Kushner. If you mistakenly believed that the correct answer was Iran or the Hamas Charter, that too is understandable, because both have made the same point. The answer to the third question is Clare Short, former Secretary of State for International Development in the UK Labor government, who has said that Israel will cause the end of the human race because it diverts the world's attention from the problem of global warming. Not China, the United States or other large polluters, but tiny Israel, which is one of the most environmental-friendly nations of the world! These are highly regarded individuals who have large followings around the world. Yet they mimic the most despised group in modern history - the Nazi Party - in blaming the world's ills on "the Jews", the Jewish state and "American Jews." If this were not so dangerous and tragic, its patent ignorance would almost be humorous. It reminds me of the old joke about Hitler making a harangue in Nuremberg, during which he shouted out his favorite rhetorical question: "Who is causing all the problems of the world?" A voice from the back of the crowd shouted out, "the bicycle riders." A shocked Hitler asked "Why the bicycle riders?" The voice responded, "why the Jews?" It's easy to scapegoat "the Jews" or the Jewish state for all the world's problems. One would expect, however, that in light of the history of Nazism, people like Gandhi, Kushner, and Short would reflect more deeply before issuing this modern day version of the Blood Libel. Shame on them.

The third statement is nonsense since Israel plays a minor role. As far as your arguments go Dr. Dershowitz, yes I understand the need for a Jewish state, but as I age I also feel sympathetic toward the Palestinians. Sure, a two state solution is fine for someone without a state. It means, some state, instead of no state. But for the other party it equates to losing half of their state. If I came and claimed your whole home and after 60 years showed willingness to make painful concessions and give you back half of it, would you find that fair? Nonetheless, the column was an interesting read.

I think Israel is afraid of Iran ..for reasons of controling the mid east... Would Israel invlove the world in a world war to distroy it's rival for business & social control of the mid east...I believe the answer is yes! Sadly..American's are un-informed about the realtiy...billions & billions of aid to Israel...a small spot on the world map..What about Africa, South America, etc. Why Why Why ? Why the effort to get all Jews back in Israel this year? Does this make me a anti Jewish person for asking questions?..in this world ..it appears so. Rick in Florida

When there is none to hate - hate the Jews. What's new? Nothing... Nothing at all! From my experience, we ought to take sides in this hateful world. And I chose mine own one, whether it is right or wrong, moraly or otherwise. Because, my side is always wrong in the eyes of the entire world... So, hell with them. We shoulf be only worried about us, the Jews, and be united as one people.

Failure to learn from our own bloody history, that's scares me more than any proclamation by Ahmadinajad and those alike. I wish HaShem will make us realize this before we go distinct...

Part 1 Rick in Florida: Asking questions would not make me think you are anti-Jewish, but your answers could. What reason do you have to believe that Israel would cause a world war for business or social control of the mid-east? How could Israel, a country with a miniscule population compared to the rest of the region ever hope to have such control? How could they possibly exert it? If there was a world war, given the statements and actions by all its enemies, wouldn't Israel be likely to suffer tremendously? Cont.

I'm amazed at the ignorance of history demonstrated here. The Balfour Accords (in 1922) set aside the transJordon and the area between the Jordon R. and the Med for the Jews. The Arabs (now using the incorrect monicker "palistinians) were given the other 80% of the historic "Jewish homelands". The British were to safeguard the Jewish lands with the "British Mandate". In 1948, the UN took another 10% of historic Israel and gave it also to the Arabs. This was not enough, so the Arabs declared war on Israel. They lost, 3times! So the Arabs now are waging a demographic war against Israel.

For generations upon generations Jews lost everything. It happen in Arab/Muslim countries. Take these assets and give it to the Palestinians. The Muslim countries love the current situation because it diverts attention to the conflict of the palestinians instead of looking at their totalitarian regimes. Check the conditions of the Palestinian refugee camps in the Arab countries, it is deplorable . Instead of helping these refugees, the Arabs treat them as animals in a Greek Colosseum. Muslims have so much money due to oil, they push the Palestinian cause and it became a world issue.

Even you are not accurate in the description of the establishemtn of the mordern Israel, by saying that "the United Nations division of the contested area into two states: one for the Palestinians and one for the Jews." There were no known "Palestinians" at the time, they were called Arabs. Palestinians should be called Jews living in what was known as "Palestine" as well as Arabs.

Matthew G #5, as you age you must also become increasingly senile. The "Palestinians" did not have a "state" at any time, before or after the UN resolution. In fact, most of today's middle eastern countries did not have a "state" until the British and French created boundaries, and later organized into nation-states, well after the Ottoman empire collapsed. The arbitrary boundaries of British Mandate Palestine were intended for a Jewish homeland. Only made a state with Israel's declaration of Independence.

To Post # 5, Matthew G - Every issue can be argued from two sides. So, the fact that you are able to make a case for the Palestinian Arabs is no surprise. But, please note that there have been Jews in the land of Israel continuously from the days of the Bible. Why is it that they do not have a claim to the land? It is not like the Jews left voluntarily. As you seem to tacitly acknowldge, any issue can be argued from either side. Isn't a two-state solution then the most reasonable?

Hey Rick in Florida, go ahead and ask the quesitons, but they are misinformed questions and the "information" you interject them with is incorrect. "billions and billions" to Israel and not to other countries? Reality check. USA has been arming Arab nations and enemies of Israel for years. Israel doesn't get nearly as much money from the USA as the arab nations. We Jews have always wanted all Jews back in Israel as part of our theological beliefs dating back over 3000 years

Cont. To Rick in Florida; I agree that you are entitled to ask questions. What determines if you are anti-Jewish is the lack of logic to your answers. It is Iran that has stated its intention to destroy Israel repeatedly in speeches. I do not recall the Israeli government stating the destruction of Iran as its goal. In fact, under the Shah, Iran was an ally of Israel. To ignore the stated declarations of Iran while giving priority to unstated and probably unproven motives of Israel is what is anti-Jewish

Matt G. - The Jews have had a continuous presence in the land called "Palestine" since before Christ. They were called Palestinians during WW2. The Muslims' issue is not about borders, but about Israel's existence. They've been trying to destroy it and the Jews since before Israel's birth, despite their oil billion$ and having a land mass 700x the size of little Israel. If the Arabs put down their weapons and quit terrorizing Israel there would be peace. If Israel put down her weapons and refused to fight there would be no more Israel.

Let me ask you Sir, for once to be on the good side and defend the victim. During the creation of the state of Israel, I lost my home. To #6: You need to learn your history. It's more, if I lived in my home and was a sovereign nation in that land, someone came, armed by others and massacred my family, and then I came back nonetheless to reclaim my home, but for the sake of peace, I will make a territorial concession you are not entitled to... see Hebron massacre of 1929, for example. See Mark Twain, innocents abroad, travelogue reporting who lived where.... you can't claim a homeland when you have never "lived there".

Unlike Ghandi or Short, Tony Kushner is a Jew who speaks glowingly about his heritage and is not ashamed to laud that unique NY jewish environment that gave rise to a Jewish population of rich talent and intellect. I have heard said that Tony's animosity toward Israel is a displacement of the bitter feelings he harbors for the Israeli goliath who deflowered and then abandoned him. Perhaps that is why Tony has trouble standing up for Israel.

It is interesting to note that PBS recently ran a series entitled "Jews in America," which traces the history of Jews coming to America since the 1600's. One of the featured commentators was Tony Kushner. He opened his first comments by saying "I am gay, American, and Jewish." He forgot another word to describe himself, pathetic.

Tony Kushner should also be aware that as a homosexual, he would be stoned or worse in any Arab country, while the Israelis openly support gay-pride parades, bars, nightclubs, same-sex unions, MP's, etc. For someone who espouses tolerance for gays, he would do well to support his fellow Jews. Such hyprocracy is astounding.

Alan Dershowitz is a true-blue Jewish patriot who says what he means and means what he says. That said, in its essence, political anti-Semitism , like any other form of bigotry, is a mental shortcut to describe causation. While white bread bigots are a spent force nowadays, third world fascists have taken over where the nazis left off. Arun Gandhi knew exactly what he was saying there, and his mea culpa afterwards was a pathetic attempt at damage control. Lest we forget. We must always stay vigilant.

From reading the comments, it seems that every person who left the area that became Israel, lost a brother. Never mind that the refugees were not accorded citizenship or even a livelihood in the countries they entered, but were placed in squalid refugee camps. 20% of Israelis are Muslim, with representation in the Knesset. Any Jews in a majority Muslim government? Any return for the over million Jews kicked out of Muslim countries? The area called Palestine was a territory where Jews, Muslims and Christian lived - Jews simply accepted the U.N. mandate for Statehood.

If the Arabs hadn't resisted partition plan with armed force and intention to commit genocide on Jews, your suffering would not have occurred. Taking responsibility for the actions of one's own people is indeed hard. But it can be very virtuous. And you can be very satisfied with your lot if you let age-old vandettas and gripes against the Jews slide away into the wilderness.

An additional 30% of Palestinian muslim males have a similar y-chromosome descending from Israel (the northern tribes--with a separation of 2500 years). Start publicly admitting that the left's philodpohy is what leads to being ANti-Israel --- which them leads to antisemtism. The number of 'proud' Jews who first accept principles of the left and then start o discover Israel's sins is astounding and surely is indicative of a flaw in the political pholosophy which leads to such an errant conclusion. Analyzing is why is painful, I am sure, but views of people like Kushner are caused neithe rby ignorance per se nor by antisemitism -- they are caused by deeply flawed frameworks of political philosophy....

The return of a "rest" of Jewish people in Sion have been announced by the prophets, without their prophecies it should not be happened. The P.in1948 made opposition to Arab armies to build his state? More than 6000 Jewish soldiers died..! 2. The big deception was made during the 1° Intifata. In '80 in Europe many thought that any violent aggression was unjust because of nuclear w., but the sistematic use of boys with stones in media seems not violence and the murderer of about one thousand P. accused to be pro-Israel from other P. was fast absent.Since then for many the history chenged(!), the situation due to nuclear w. forgot, not only in M.E.. I don't know nothing of Tony Kushner before, but I have seen sometimes a Jew to speak against Israel or the orthodox parties in Israel or to favour Islamics in Europe! In our time a lot of Jews are atheist, some of them got a bit of future with communist ideals. But now it's not again a dream "plausible" and rather that to recognize that they made something wrong, they are against Israel, not interested on the Israel's history but supporter of P. and even of Hamas! In truth the return of the Jews in Sion have been announced and is wanted by Gd because of his Plan of salvation of the men.

It seems to me that those Arabs who fulminate so much about the "poor Palestinians" should have been putting their money where their mouths are. Had the Arab leaders used the billions that they get from oil to help the economy and provide jobs to the "palestinians" the Gaza and every other place would be a paradise. Instead they use their wealth to aggrandized themselves with little regard for helping the poor. They are much happier sending the ignorant to maim and kill and to blow themselves up.
