Double Standard Watch: The Vatican's continuing Jewish problem Posted by Alan Dershowitz
Comments: 36
As Pope Benedict makes his historic visit to Israel, several Cardinals, Bishops and priests continue to perpetuate the Church's long history of anti-Semitism. Photographs recently surfaced of Father Angelo Idi wearing a swastika. He belongs to the same group of Fascists that include Bishop Richard Williamson - who persists in denying the Holocaust. But the Church's Jewish problem is not limited to marginal priests or ex-communicated Bishops. At least two of the Church's most influential Cardinals, including one who was in the running for Pope Benedict's job and who remains a leading candidate to replace him, are overt anti-Semites and proud of it. Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Meridiaga, who is the archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, has been telling anyone who is willing to listen that "the Jews" are to blame for the scandal surrounding the sexual misconduct of priests toward young parishioners! The Jews? How did Cardinal Rodriguez ever come up with this ridiculous idea? Here is his "logic." He begins by asserting that the Vatican is anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian. It follows, therefore, that "the Jews" had to get even with the Catholic Church, while at the same time deflecting attention away from Israeli injustices against the Palestinians. The Jews managed to do this by arranging for the media which they, of course, control to give disproportionate attention to the Vatican sex scandal. Listen to Rodriguez's own words:
Rodriguez then goes on to compare the Jewish-controlled media with "Hitler," because they are "protagonists of what I do not hesitate to define as a persecution against the Church." When asked whether he wanted to reconsider his attack, Rodriguez replied: "I don't repent...sometimes it's necessary to shake things up." The prime media culprit is, according to Rodriguez, The Boston Globe, which has won numerous journalistic awards for its exposure of the sex scandal and cover-up. The Globe is owned by The New York Times, which is controlled by the Sulzberger family. Hence the Jewish conspiracy. The problem with this cockamamie theory is that the Jewish community of Boston was very close to, and admiring of, Cardinal Bernard Law, who presided over the archdiocese during the scandal. Law had built bridges between the Catholic and Jewish communities of Boston, and when the scandal was exposed by the very un-Jewish Boston Globe the Jewish community remained largely supportive of Law. None of the leading media critics, lawyers or politicians who railed against the church was Jewish. Most were Catholic. But that didn't matter to the bigoted cardinal, who along with other classic anti-Semites believes that if there is a problem "the Jews" must be to blame for it. As James Carroll, himself a Catholic, has characterized Rodriguez's "crackpot" mindset: "When the church has a problem - here is the oldest move of all - blame the Jews." Nor is Rodriguez the only current cardinal afflicted with such bigotry. Cardinal Joseph Glemp, the primate of Poland, has blamed the Jews for Polish communism, alcoholism and collaboration with Hitler. He also accused Jews of trying to kill nuns. Other high-ranking priests, especially in Central America and Poland, have leveled similar anti-Semitic accusations against the Jews and Israel. These blood libels demonstrate that the Vatican still has a problem with anti-Semitism at the top levels of its hierarchy, even after Vatican II declared anti-Semitism to be "a sin." How can serial sinners like Cardinals Rodriguez and Glemp retain their statures as princes of the Church while continuing to preach blood libels against the Jews? Anti-Semitism in the Catholic clergy transcends ideological lines. Bishop Williamson and Father Idi are fascists of the hard right. Cardinal Rodriguez is a leftist "liberation" theologist. Cardinal Glemp is just an old fashioned Polish anti-Semite who follows in the footsteps of his predecessors who were also Primates of the Polish Catholic Church (unlike Pope John Paul II, who was also Polish but was philosemitic.) Pope Benedict is a good man who has generally continued the good work of his two predecessors toward the Jews. But the problem of anti-Semitism is getting worse in the Church, as it is in many parts of the world, especially in Central and South America. The growing influence and success of Cardinal Rodriguez, and the failure of the Pope to condemn his overt anti-Semitism, contributes to the legitimation of this sin among some of the Faithful. The time has come, indeed is long overdue, for Pope Benedict to speak out and to take firm action against the bigots in red hats that are sullying his papacy and wounding the moral authority of his Church.

It is not a secret that you wnet to Yeshiva in Brooklyn, but that does not make you a religious scholar, comparative or otherwise, which is where every discussion in this regard should be headed. The New Testament just to begin has 450 very vile anti-semitic pericopes in only 250 pages concenrning Jews, call them Pharisess, or Priests, or Chief Priests, or Judaizers or Synagogues etc, whatever association you please and you will see what the problem you are up against. The problem is Christianity and it is all myth and fiction and forgery. Their hatred against Jews is part of their daily life.

What role did Cardinal Rodriguez play in overseeing the handling of the crisis and in authorizing to say something as anti semitic?
Have any cardinal been disciplined for wrongdoing in the church affair related with this public comment? Had the vatican leader been misinformed about sex scandal ?
thanks!

It is interesting how Mr. Dershowits uses cheap demagogouery and lies to criticise cheap demagogouery and lies. Cardinal Glemp did not accuse Jews of trying to kiil nuns. In his criticism of a specific group of Jews who invaded a monastery next to the Auschwitz concentration camp he stated something to the effect that it's good that the nuns were not killed. Cardinal Glemp is a conservative and he is known for his awkward statements; he is also known for apologizing for those statements. But he is not an antisemite and does not use or believe in blood libels.

The Pope should learn about the 7 Noahide Laws for Gentiles. Jewish "leaders" should do this instead of groveling for his love and acceptance.
After all, John 14:6 states that their man-god is the only way to eternal bliss. They believe it as much as do Protestants and Eastern Orthodox Christians.

Oi Ve,.we Jews dont have enough trouble with extremists from Islam, we got some Jew Haters in the Cathoilic Church. In America, at least, Cathoilic/Jewish relations have never been better from what I read. Most American Catholics know that the crazies in islam hate us both. What is it with the Vatican? This Pope seems a likeable humanitarian. I wonder what these anti-Semitic Cardinals and Bishops think when they pray to the Jewish Jesus. I seen more "Jewish people" sculptures in Italy than anywhere else in the whole world. Michalanglo loved Jews! Moses, Jesus, and Mary, just to name a few!

Maybe its true, not all Jews, but certainly some Jews. Maybe its time Jews looked within to understand why "anti-semetism exists. Cause & effect plays a big part in all this & of course one attracts what one thinks of the most. When the Jew changes & becomes a real Jew, anti-semetism will disappear.

Professor you are absolutely correct. Better keep an eye on that man, he will be trying to take over the Temple Mount with the Arabs. Do not trust him at all. There are motives behind his actions.

2,600 years ago King Nabonidus of Babylon neglected the military affairs of the city in favour of cultural & religious events. He relied on a number of military alliances [particularly with the Arabs] to offset the rising military threat of the Persians. Nabonidus replaced the god Bel-Marduk [Catholicism] with the Arabian moon god Sin, [Islam] and installed his worthless son Belshazzar as the regent of Babylon. Belshazzar sowed discord with the priests & divided the populace. Some historians say Belshazzar's feast was supposed to be a celebration for having survived the Jewish prophecies.

The Catholic Church has absolutely no relationship to true Christianity. True Christians, like Rev. John Hagee, are the furthest thing from anti-semitic. It is a biblical duty for true Christians to support Israel and the Jews from the pre-ordained evils of the anti-semitic demons that will continue to roam the earth.

People can be known by what they do as well as what they don't do. It would be weakness not to remove moral problems if we thought of them as a moral problem. There IS a difference between forgiveness and acceptance. What makes sense in these events is that acceptance is about what seems, in the short term, good for the number of people in the church.

Anti-Semitism is never about the Jews. It IS about individuals, groups or countries not willing to take responsibilty for their own actions. Very often these people engage in the very activities for which they criticize Jews. I have never met an anti-Semite that did not also have some morally degenerate disease. Hating Jews breathes life into their otherwise dingy existence. If Jews didn't exist these people would need to invent them. The Truth is irrelevant. The only answer to anti-Semitism is for the Jews to stay united, strong and self-reliant. These people eventually succumb to their lies.

And yet, Shimon Peres wants to gift the Pope with more than a half dozen Christian sites?? Doesn't Peres know it wouldn't change a darn thing? Isn't it time to stop offering and handing out pieces of our Holy Land??

Dershowitz's Dilemma. Clearly Alan has a dilemma. No Jew with a conscience would tolerate anti-Semitism in any form. However, lets put current priorities and real dangers in perspective. Most people have little, or limited knowledge of Rodriguez and the other anti-Semites in the Vatican. I am more preturbed about Dershwitz's and the other liberal Democratic Jews who blindly support Obama and his despicable anti-Israel cabinet. They pose greater danger to Israel than the Vatican clergy. Dershowitz should reconsider his priorities.

Alan Dershowitz is my hero---and has been since "Firing Line" visits he made, even thirty years ago. He blesses us with his wisdom, courage, erudition, gentle, honest nature, and prodigious debating skills. What a citizen! What an American! What a person of the world! What a Jewish man! Go get 'em Alan.

It is important to say that the vast majority of Catholics are not anti-semitic. Anti-semitic Catholics are a very small minority who I am deeply ashamed to be associated. I am a Irish Catholic Zionist who deeply respects Israel and the Jewish people worldwide. Shalom.

I think he misses the point completly. There are thousands of bishops and cardinals in the world and there will always be antisemites in the church. We too have our extremists such as Baruch Marzel, Noam Federman, and other "death-to-the-arabs" type of guys even in the current government.
Of grave concern in my view is the fact that the Vatican never apologized for the horrendous crimes commited against us by the inquisition in the XV, XVI centuries. We were wiped out of the iberian peninsula and not even conversion was enough to placade the hatred of the Church against us.

To #6
Early Christianity differed from Judaism, at least from the perception of the Romans, that it was accepting of Rome's authority (render onto Caesar what's Ceasars.. etc) while the Jews constantly rebelled. Hadrian leveled Jerusalem and rebuilt it as roman city (Aelia Capitolina). Romans initiated antisemitism. Organized Christianity, as soon as it became Rome's state religion, took on delegitimizing Judaism in order to promote its own legitimacy as the only true religion. This will continue as long the Christians continue to think of themselves as the only true religion.

#21 Really? Since 2000 there have been many events over the years to support Israel; in my town I was at most; where where the evangelical xtians? Few showed up, they were in church, or lunch after church, or out shopping on Saturdays or washing their cars. A major city with churces on every street corner and few showed up. Same thing for pro life rallies, the speak louder than their actions. Evangelicals do just enough to look stylish. We needed to have all gotten on a plane to Israel when Gush Katiff was torn down by it's own government. 2-300,000 of people

Very informative article Alan, you're the man! It's craziness IMHO what the RCC is allowing. To #4 Judas, please try to keep an open mind regarding Jesus, if you wish to explore the matter further. Read Zechariah chapter 12...the books of Daniel and Isaiah. Many prophecies there concerning Him. Also consider Genesis chapter 1 verse 26 : "Let us make man in our image...". Notice the "us's & our's". The are hundreds of examples in the Torah & Old Testament. God Bless Israel! It isn't a coincidence most of the world hates you, but the Lord will see you through.

Every one of these ministers who stand in my way shall be cast down by the God they give lip service to. In the end the Catholic Church shall be the hope of Israel, but for now those who use truth with malice store up retribution for the day of wrath.
God will provide the burnt offering (Gen 22)

How can you say the New Testament is 'anti-semetic'. You have not read it. The New Testament is a continuation from the Old and is Jewish in that Jesus (Yeshua) was a Jew and practically all the early Church was Jewish. The criticisms- (not'anti-semetic remarks!)-Yeshua made against SOME of the Jewish leaders was that they 'cleaned the outside of the cup rather than the inside'. They were blind guides for the people despite outwardly teaching the Law of Moses , their heart condition was wrong. If Christians do not love (agape) Jews then they cannot really love Yeshua. Re #6 & #19.Sorry sirs, both of you.But Roman Catholicism is not Christianity, having gorged itself with
the blood of both Christians&Jews. When Martin Luther launched the Reformation,Protestants in turn gorged themselves with the blood of both Catholics&Jews.Do we conclude then that
Christianity is wrong because both Protestants&Catholics persecute the Jews?Well the Bible Speaks
Expressly about Both The Church&The Jews.Is no Christian in the end who believes in the heresy
of ReplacementThe0l0gy,denying that Israel is GOD'S People.Read Pastor John Hagee's "Final Dawn
Over Jerusalem"

When The Church Was Established after Pentecost, the Prince of this w0rld scrambled in a frenzy to set murderous hatred between Christians and Jews, and succeeded only too well. But neither the Church nor the Jews were destroyed,By THE GRACE OF GOD.
Today, this p0pe is well on his way to turn the Vatican into The Great Whore of Babylon.
This is the Potw's last attempt by human institutions before he will have to step in in person to declare himself god and finalsolutinize the Jews.Well,he can't say he hasn't been warned.

to hate someone or something just defeats the purpose of why you exist to love and be loved is what life is about hatred toward anyone has no purpose where as love has meaning and purpose you choose?

I was reading a commentary written 277 years ago by a man named Westley. It was about this very subject and he wrote about The Cathlic Church and it beginning. It made me wonder how this man could agree with Alan 277 years later. I have all ways thought Alan to be Israeli first and everything else second.

Living in a catholic Peru I can tell you that the common stereotypes of Jews here are pretty bad. Nazi symbols are found in graffiti in Lima and in the mountains (though not frequently) and Nazi propaganda is available in bookstores and DVD/CD shops. Never once heard of the catholic church coming out against such things. Dershowitz probably is on to something - it's more of a potential threat that needs watching than something immanent.

There is only one city on seven hills in the bible and that is Rome. This city is called the 'whore of Babylon'. How many more centuries is it going take for all to see that the Roman Catholic Church has never been friends of the Jews - and never willl be. The Messiah wilol not come to Rome but to Jerusalem and the RCC will never get over it.

Rome or Jerusalem? Two cities, and one choice. The Torah only talks about one place where G-d has placed His Name, and that is Jerusalem. Nothing good has come out of Rome, it is a fake and fraudulent copy of the true centre of the world: Jerusalem. Do not fear, Rome's time is coming, and it will be no more. A mere memory in the time line of what happens when you try to replace God's ways with man's ways.

2 points - IMHO I don't think the Roman Empire ever fell. It transformed itself into Christianity. There's no truly good reason for the hd of Christianity to be in Rome. I think the Empire was sinking, they noticed that "the people" seemed to be drawn to this Christianity stuff and they jumped on it. The Pope holds a position pretty identical to the Caesers. They could no longer hold onto the empire physically, so they went for mind control. And by all historical counts it worked!
Pt #2 - Ireland recently had a final report of decades of horrific abuse in the church- no Jewish media here

To be fair and balanced - everyone hates everybody. Really. I'm sure as I can be that there's the same percentage of Jews disliking other groups as dislike them. The Cherokee hated the Apache. Unfortunately this is just every day human nature. Is it nice? Heck no. But it's all pervasive all over the world. You can write this same article every day of the year and keep changing the names of the participants. I hear this same stuff the other direction and I'm NOT making that up. Go watch that horrific youtube video going around with the drunken American kids mouthing off. It's make ya sick.

As an honest to goodness Christian, there is much I have in common with the Jewish people. the Tanakh as a starter. Beyond that I recognize as my savior, and try to follow the teachings of, the one known as Christ. In doing so, I willingly recognize that this Hebrew died in payment of my sins, thereby giving me eternal life with the Father. Between the gift of eternal life, and the fact that the Jews are God's chosen people, no real Christian could ever be anti-semetic, regardless of any claims they might make (RCC included). God bless Israel, and may He soften the heart of President Obama.

Give me a break Dershowitz! Yes we were all saddened and embarrased by the Priest scandal. But typical in your apparent and continued disdain for the church you minimize or ignore the truth. The percentage of Rabbis involved in similar scandels are the same but yet the focus centered on the Priests. Yes, Jews do control the majority of the media in the States but thats not nesessarily a bad thing provided that their coverage is fair. Many businesses in the States are controled by ethnic groups-who cares! But your continued bashing of the Church will only allienate Catholic suppoters of Israel.
