Those who successfully challenged the nomination of Charles W. Freeman, Jr. to become chairman of the National Intelligence Council should be praised for an act of high patriotism. It would have been disastrous for the United States to have, as the person responsible for overseeing "policy-neutral intelligence assessments" for the president, a zealot who is anything but policy-neutral when it comes to two of the most important areas of international conflict.

Freeman not only has extremist views regarding the Middle East and China, but has been beholden to lobby groups anxious to influence US intelligence assessments regarding Saudi Arabia and China. Freeman bowed out when it became clear his highly questionable financial ties to the Saudi and Chinese lobbies would be deeply probed by inspectors-general, congressional staffers and the media. He couldn't handle the truth about his financial ties to these lobbies, which do not serve the interests of the United States.

Freeman apparently believed that China should have been more aggressive in its crackdown on the peaceful Tiananmen Square protestors. At the same time, he has been critical of American support for Israeli efforts to stop violent terrorists from blowing up Israeli school buses and firing rockets at Israeli kindergartens. There is only one rational explanation for why an intelligence official would be so irrational as to express more sympathy for brutal Chinese repression of peaceful dissent than for Israeli self-defense against violent terrorism: Freeman has been bought and paid for by lobbies he does not wish to alienate. He has a long history of playing the tunes selected for him by those who have paid him.

Freeman acknowledged that he was deeply and emotionally committed to a fundamental change in US policy toward Israel. That is certainly his right as a private citizen, or even as an elected official. But as the person responsible for what are supposed to "policy-neutral intelligence assessments," his views, characterized by Senator Charles Schumer as "over the top" and an "irrational hatred of Israel,"  would not have served either him or our nation well.

If there was ever any doubt about his neutrality, he eliminated it with his over-the-top reaction to those who challenged his qualifications for the job based on his record.  He railed against "the Israel lobby," blaming it, and it alone, for his failure to get the job.  He ignored those human rights advocates who were outraged by his defense of the Chinese repression of the Tiananmen demonstrators and his unwavering support for the most repressive regime in the Middle East. He ignored environmentalists who worried that he was far too beholden to oil interests. And he ignored patriotic Americans who support the US policy in the Middle East because they believe it is good for America, for democracy and for the war against terrorism.

Freeman was not alone in invoking the "power" of the Israel lobby and accusing it of unpatriotic actions. He teamed up with Stephen Walt, the academic who has recently made a career of blaming all of America's ills on "The Lobby." Here is how Walt put it: "For all of you out there who may have questioned whether there was a powerful 'Israel Lobby' or admitted that it existed but didn't think it had much influence... think again." Walt ignored the fact that the powerful Saudi, China and foreign oil lobbies were supporting Freeman because they believed, quite correctly, that his assessment of intelligence would be anything but neutral when it came to protecting their interests. He also ignored the fact that AIPAC - which Walt considers the puppet-master of the Jewish Lobby - took no position on the Freeman nomination, and that those who opposed it included critics of Israeli policies.

So let me understand the Freeman-Walt position. When the Saudi,  Chinese and foreign oil lobbies (with a small "l") exercise their influence, that's freedom of speech and the right to petition the government. But when the Israel Lobby (capital "L") challenges an appointment, such action is "dual loyalty," "un-American" and "unpatriotic." Their other position is that any time people of diverse backgrounds and views independently challenge a government decision that relates to the Middle East, this represents the collective action of the notorious and powerful Israel Lobby, rather than the heartfelt views of individual patriotic Americans.

The truth is the Freeman appointment was bad for America, bad for peace in the Middle East, bad for human rights in China, bad for Tibet, bad for the environment and bad for "policy-neutral intelligence." Those who challenged it performed a patriotic duty. They should be praised for helping the Obama administration avoid a serious blunder that threatened to compromise the president's ability to act in the interest of the United States on the basis of policy-neutral intelligence. All Americans owe them a debt of gratitude.

Freeman not unlike his fellow Israel haters are incapable of putting aside their (personal)animus towards Israel in order to secure US interests. It is pointless to explain to these individuals why it is crucial for US national policy to help/appreciate Israel's front line fight against Islamic terrorists.Further, Freeman is doubly compromised, thus rendering him impotent to serve US interests. His financial ties to the most vile and repressive regimes distorts his views and his anti-Israel hatred blinds him.He truly believes that freedom of speech(lobbying) is NOT a right IF one supports Israel
2  |   Leibel USA, Sunday Mar 15, 2009
The real question is "Why was he nominated in the first place"?
3  |   Gnarlodious, Santa Fe, Sunday Mar 15, 2009
I as a Liberal have the utmost respect for Senator Charles Schumer and yourself. Rational discussion of this topic, especially among liberals, is so rare in these days of overwhelming propaganda.
4  |   Benjamin SF, Sunday Mar 15, 2009
By this criteria Rahm Emanuel shouldnt be where he is either
5  |   veni-vidi-agati, Sunday Mar 15, 2009
The president may be well advised to vet his vetting team

I love the fact that pro-Israeli extremists are all the sudden human rights activists for China. AIPAC is a lobby that doesn't have to register as a foreign lobby, therefore it's easy for unwavering supporters of Israel to pretend that Israel shares the interests of America. AIPAC is a lobby for another country thus should register as a foreign lobby. The fact that a scumbag like Steve Rosen could spy inside the Pentagon and then turn around and bitch and moan about a Saudi or Chinese lobbies. Dershowitz, the gig is up and you know it.
7  |   Paul Grad, USA, Sunday Mar 15, 2009
He would have never even got this far, if Obama hadn't been elected. Those who supported Obama are responsible for this legitimization of anti-Israeli bigotry.
8  |   JLT, Sunday Mar 15, 2009
Leibel is right. The REAL QUESTION ? Shall we have an answer from Washington ?
9  |   Dr. Doug Charles, U.S.A., Sunday Mar 15, 2009
I must say, not knowing if Professor Dershowitz will ever read this: Sir, as often as I have disagreed with many of your expressed views in years past, I must admit that, since I've been reading your posts in this site for the past few months, I've been impressed with your well thought out logic and clear presentation. Thank you for your insight and incisive expression, especially in this latest matter. Well done!

I have great respect to Alan D. except on his big support for BHO vs. J. Macain during the past election. If Alan is correct about the good intentions on the Middle East by BHM and his left wing administration, how come a person suce so bias as Freeman is even proposed for such an important post? I wonder, with all due respect, if Alan is Naive or playing Naive on this issue tu support his further argument and mistakes... In BHO administration this is not the first time that LEFTIST elementets and anti Israel/Zionism rethoric and policy are presented. Maybe AD should think twice.....
11  |   Tzvi/amerikkka, Sunday Mar 15, 2009
Those that were against Freeman did so because they are Israelcentrists. Those that were against freeman do not express concern over any other anti-american obamunists in this administration. As long as someone is anti-amerikkkan and not anti-Israel the Israel lobby will not speak up.Not that I believe this is wrong, its just a fact. This goes for a pro taliban assistant AG, a pro-pornographer AG, A pro-commie AG, Other assorted anti-american nuts in the obamunist administration.
12  |   Chennai Tamil Nadu, Sunday Mar 15, 2009
The freeman position sounds like the end stage (When ?) scenario depicted by Samuel Huntington in his clash of the civilizations narrative.China + Islamic world vs the rest of the world. The question remains Is this possible outcome a prophetic revelation or in line with greek wisdom or both.
13  |   Yesh, Sunday Mar 15, 2009
Dennis Blair nominated Freeman. No doubt, Blair too is a serious threat to the United States. Blair is a secret police nightmare waiting to happen.
14  |   warren levy, Monday Mar 16, 2009
Why was Freeman even nominated in the first place? This Obama administration doesn't bode well for the U.S. or Israel
15  |   Alan Perlmutter, Monday Mar 16, 2009
Glad he is gone but the real issue is what it says about the people who appointed him and their selection criteria
16  |   David, Monday Mar 16, 2009
I pray that people like Dershowitz keep fighting for Israel. They are the true fighters. Thank you. I have yet to hear even one word that will give me conformt coming out of the 40+ democratic Jewish congress people. I feel it is as though they are ashamed of the existence of Israel and would rather see israel disappear off the earth. On her last trip to Gaza, Clinton agreed with a 10 year old interviwing her that israel is an agressor country. What a shame. I am bothered.
17  |   Bert Goldman, San Antonio, Texas, Monday Mar 16, 2009
I can not understand the nomination of a representastive of Saudi Arabia and China to head intelligence gathering, and I supppose, interpretation of information. The implications is that both hostile governments would be reading our reports over our shoulders and thus harm our interests. I do not understand the appointment of this "patriot" by the presidency. Curious, don't the president's men check backgound information. Good riddance of bad rubbish!
18  |   Cyprien, CA, USA, Monday Mar 16, 2009
In every nation, there some essential values that are defining. In the US, it used to be human rights and democracy. It is precisely the commitment to those two fundamental values that led to the election of Barack Obama. But how does Obama respond - by appointing political hacks who have respect for neither of these underlying principles that ground the US. It wasn't just that Freeman was an opportunist or a lobbyist or beholden to foreign interests, his policy statements reflected little commitment to the values that make America so unique - and hence, his unfitness.
19  |   RavDav, Monday Mar 16, 2009
Obama will; continue to appoint Idealogs with pro-Palestinian positions and adopt positions that hang Israel out-to-dry. When push comes to shove, Obama will talk the public talk re: support for Israel, but behind the scenes, he'll give the advantage to Israel's enemies and opponents. Will he deny Israel refueling and fly-over rights to attack Iranian nukes? Will he refuse to supply Israel with Bunker-Busting bombs? Will he not resupply Israel's Military after the next Hizbollah & Hamas wars? Don't count on the NY Times reporting these betrayals, but know they're coming, sure as rain!
20  |   choy usa, Monday Mar 16, 2009
Actually, Saudi Arabia, China, and you can be sure,Iran would have been GHOST WRITING Freeman'as "Neutral "Intelligence Reports".
21  |   bernie nagler, Monday Mar 16, 2009
With schmucks like Freeman I thank God for the Israel lobby
22  |   Susan, Monday Mar 16, 2009
The question is how it even got this far: how someone so beholden to autocratic regimes, with a record of so many outrageous anti-democratic statements, managed to get nominated in the first place. This is not just a failure to pay nanny taxes. Mr. Blair, an explanation please!
23  |   Maja, Sweden, Monday Mar 16, 2009
Let's hope Freeman and Walt are right and the "Israel Lobby" is as powerful as they fear it is, haha! Highly valuable comment as always, Alan! Thanks and shalom!
24  |   Danny, Monday Mar 16, 2009
I have a question for Mr. Dershowitz: Had Mr. Freeman an enthusiastic proponent of Zionism and a true "friend of Israel", would you have made such a big deal about his China human rights views? Would you have even cared about them? Hypocrisy, it seems, has many faces. One such face is getting preached-to about human rights from a person who defended O.J. Simpson in his murder trial. I find that to be completely egregious!
25  |   Peter, Thailand, Monday Mar 16, 2009
How sick is it when Alan Dershowitz is calling someone else “over-the-top”? I saw the Freeman interview on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS and was very impressed. I then did some background research on him. If the Obama is genuinely committed to achieve a balanced and principled solution to the Israel/Palestine conflict, he needs more advisors like Freeman. What also worries me is that the fascist tactics of Dershowitz and the AIPAC crowd will end up causing a strong anti-semitic backlash within the USA and other developed countries.
26  |   ray, Monday Mar 16, 2009
Danny the point is that in supporting China Freeman shows a hard right philosophy. In supporting the Arabs he has swung around to the New Left. The question is why he shows two such differing ways of thought. If he's for sale as this discripancy suggests, then he's dangerous in a responsble public position.
27  |   Shlomo, Jerusalem, Monday Mar 16, 2009
Dershowitz is Obama addict - The glaring ommission of this article is the illumination that the Freeman nomination has on the anti-Israel (nay anti-semitic) policies and mindset of Obama. But don't tell that to Dershowitz, he is way to infatuated with Obama to admit his own hypocrisy - the real person who should have been opposed is Obama himself - the great zionist and patriotic duty was to not support Obama - but don't tell that to Dershowitz - he is too comfortable in hypocrisy to recognize the truth.
28  |   Joshua USA, Monday Mar 16, 2009
Thank G-d for Mr. Dershowitz as the pandemic rise of Antisemitism is equal or greater than that of pre-WW2 Germany. There are too few Jewish leaders willing to stand up for Israel. We (American Jews) are by far the most pathetic, voting for a President who clearly is no friend to the Jewish state.I
29  |   Bill Castoriano, Monday Mar 16, 2009
#24 Danny, what does the Dershowitz-Simpson lawyer-client relationship have to do with the nomination of an on-the-record Israel-basher like Freeman to head intelligence. Your comment is naive and even more so, dumb. The favorite tactic of the Left is to ignore the message and smear the messenger. It's obvious where you're coming from
30  |   Gary, Florida, Monday Mar 16, 2009
Leibel is absolutely right. All we read is how good it turned out that Freeman's nomination fell through. But given all the nomination issues which have arisen, someone, somewhere has to start seriously questioning Obama. Is he merely an empty suit who blindly listens to advisors. Not a good thing. Worse is likely, that the decision to nominate Freeman was his considered decision, which would tell us a whole lot about Obama. A very bad thing.
31  |   Mark, Monday Mar 16, 2009
Isn't it disingenuous of Dershowitz, who strongly supported Obama during the election, to dump on Freeman, but not on the Obama administration which tried to appoint Freeman, and also defended him before Congress? Another example of liberal intellectuals letting Obama off the hook!
32  |   Joe Tarrin, Monday Mar 16, 2009
David, Monday Mar 16, 2009 "I pray that people like Dershowitz keep fighting for Israel. " You said it, Dave. Dershowitz fights for Israel NOT AMERICA. Freeman did not take money from Saudi Arabia, the saudis made some funding available to a small think tank he chaired. What about the millions $ the Israel Lobby makes available for favoured politicians campaign funds or alternatively for oponants if they don't say all the right "pro Israel" things. Israel is a drain on US finances, your wars are not our wars. Your US shills are a disgrace. AIPAC register as foreign agent NOW
33  |   Htos1 USA, Tuesday Mar 17, 2009
Any time a democrat can be run out of Washington is a great day for America and her allies.Well done.
34  |   DavidM, Tuesday Mar 17, 2009
Mr. Freeman had zero experience in intelligence or defense matters. He was utterly unqualified for the job. He has a closed mind and there is no way he would have given a bias free intelligence estimate. His appointment was an embarassment. The beauty of America is that the people rose up and declared that this outrage shall not pass. Mr. Freeman was thoroughly rejected by the American people.
35  |   roger underwood, Tuesday Mar 17, 2009
I, as an American, fear for Israel. With the new regime in Washington, I am afraid that the support we have given over the years will dwindle now that the left have taken over the USA. Stand strong Israel, and be prepared to go it alone, if necessary. The election of Bibi has come at the right time for you. I only wish we had someone like Netanyahu running this country. I fear for my grandchildren.
36  |   Howard Canada, Tuesday Mar 17, 2009
I doubt very much that Obama was not involved in the Freeman nomination. Obama has surrounded himself by the old Carter Israel-haters. Obama clearly wanted Freeman in this position to help with his "agenda" but set it up so he could "plausibly deny" any association if the nomination blew up, as it did. But one of these days Obama will slip up and the media will be waiting. He and Freeman are "cut from the cloth". Obama's upcoming "goodwill tour" of Islamist states will be worth watching.
37  |   Nachman, Tuesday Mar 17, 2009
One concludes here stating that the world media has constantly expressed the Islamic world's anger and hatred by stating continuously & repeatedly the lie that the US favours the Israelis in the ME conflict. Hence the controversy situation in Congress and Pentagon over the Freeman appointment, and how and what the present presidency will do and act over the conflict.
38  |   Ian, Tuesday Mar 17, 2009
I take a pessimistic view of the future of Israel, AND the USA. Israel will not survive an Obama administration, unless the US will be adamant about suppoting Israel...and, of course, it will not. Fresh thinking is needed as a 2-state solution is untenable. Shrinking Israel to the point of being defenceless will go on. And, if Samantha Powers' suggestion that the US should invade Israel on behalf of the Palestinians ever takes hold, look out everybody!! This is where the world is right now. If Iran, or the US will destroy Israel, Achmedinejad and Obama will be international heroes. Yuck!!
39  |   George , Boston, Tuesday Mar 17, 2009
Iwatched the show of FAREED ZACHARIA; and it seems from his questions to Freeman that he was even more anti-jewish and anti Israeli than that fun Freeman; all along his questions were pulling Freeman to all the anti-jewish and anti-israeli answers; it reached a comical situation where DR ZA CHARIA and Freeman agreed that 9/11 was due to the US backing of Israel; I was expecting any time that Zacharia did not mention that all the terrorists involved were Israeli; for a Doctor and a Newsweek editor he should know better and not be so Arabs; 9/11 was executed by arab terrorists
40  |   J'net maine, Saturday Mar 21, 2009
Good article, well thought out and written. Too bad so many are attached to their conspiracy notion of a powerful Jewish lobby working in secret and ignoring or supporting the overt conspirators whose stated mission it is to destroy Israel and the US. I voted for Obama because he seems sensible and discerning. Freeman appears to be neither. Nor do those claiming to be for social justice for Palestinians while supporting the leadership that encourages them into bigotry, violence and death, when it serves their cause.
41  |   Gideon539, Sunday Apr 12, 2009
32. Joe: AIPAC does NOT give money to political candidates, EVER! There may be other Jewish groups that do, AIPAC does not! Also, AIPAC is populated by AMERICAN CITIZENS, like myself. AIPAC invites Hindus, Blacks, Hispanics, and plenty of other American groups to come speak and join in the the search for peace. Your comments expose an ignorance that reveals you know very little about AIPAC. Even psuedo-Jews like Daily Show's John Stewart make that mistake. If you simply go to AIPAC.org you can see video from last year that clearly searches for peace, & criticizes Israel when warranted.

Ronn BenHarav, Israel: to #31 Adam continued: Regarding the majority world opinion, In '48 the UN legitimized us and now they demonize us. Basing our morality on international law which exists, almost exclusively, to demonize Israel is not sound logic. We are Jews, live it, love it and stop apologizing.
Ronn BenHarav, Israel: #31 Adam,Contrary to your belief, I share nothing with lost/left Philip. I'm a right wing Israeli that disagrees with apologist arguments that we owe anything to the world. The professor used Colonel Klink's testimony to legitimize Israel's warfare. Testimonial evidence is a moot argument since it can be used for or against the Jewish people (Goldstein report is a case in point). It doesn't hold for Israel's legitimacy, which frankly should be obvious, especially in contrast to Hitler's proverbial progeny that we face today, be it Palestinian or the fifth column population in our midst.
