Israel Stories: In denial about Islamic terror Posted by Jeremy Cardash
Comments: 30
As children, whenever we went on long car journeys, we would play all manner of word and general knowledge games. Describing the Prime Minister's cat with every letter of the alphabet (X was always a challenge, he was always Xenophobic), countries of the world using the last letter of the country (A was the best, Australia, would then become Austria, Angola, Albania etc) and then there was 'I Spy'. We have a new game, name a country that does not have a problem with Muslim fundamentalists, militia or terrorists. Now there's a challenge. Name a country where an act of radical Islamist terror has occurred which hasn't somehow tied in with Jews and Israel. From Iraq to Denmark, every act of terror by the many, many Muslim extremist and not so extreme groups have killed in the name of their global Jihad and, oh yes, for their brothers and sisters in Palestine. Now name a time in the last 40 years when we have stood up for ourselves, turned our back on the demands for self restraint, diplomacy and doing what was right for us as a state, a people and nation without pandering to the US, EU, BBC, and any other worthless acronym you can think of. Actually that's another game. Name all the acronyms of organizations seeking to destroy, destabilize or delegitimize Israel and the Jews. OK, a new game. Name a time when the world has cared, been moved, wept or mourned or uniformly condemned the spilling of Jewish blood. (Maybe the Munich Olympics, maybe.) Name a country that has stood up to the Muslim extremists and fundamentalists among its own citizens. Name a country that is not in denial about what they are seeing before their eyes. Name a country that isn't trying to brush the problem under the carpet hoping it will go away and name a country that feels that action rather than words will solve the problem. In Mumbai, an attack perpetrated by Pakistani extremists, Kashmiri separatists or Iran, they purposely targeted and attacked the Chabad center killing the Jews inside. Jews in India totally unrelated to any of India's problems, non-military, non-political, just there to help their fellow Jews with a warm smile, a Shabbat meal and maybe some direction in life. And Jewish travelers escaping to see the world and We are victims, and that's our lot. In every generation, as we recite in the Haggada, they rise up to destroy us but the Holy One blessed be He, saves us. Or the running joke, they tried to kill us, we were saved, let's eat! We have been victims ever since Abraham was thrown into a fiery furnace by Nimrod. And since then look at our history. Pretty horrific. True in every generation they rose up to destroy, and some of us were saved to regroup and wait for the next round of crusades, blood libels, inquisitions, pogroms, holocausts. We have more ways to describe the way we have been persecuted and murdered than Eskimos have for snow. Now name a nation that has more Nobel prizes under their belts, in every category. Name a nation that has produced some of the greatest teachers, thinkers, scientists, doctors, mathematicians. Name a country that in just 60 years has overtaken almost every country in commerce and industry. Name a nation that should be proud, upstanding, strong and selfish in the face of so much adversity. Name a nation that seems to drag its feet and panders to the will of others at the expense of its own citizens. Name a nation that will one day, with the help of those who are not in denial and don't have their heads in the sand, breed great leaders that will stand up for the blood of their brothers and sisters and represent our people as a strong, determined nation, pursuing peace and prosperity, security and tolerance and an example to the rest of the world.

Jeremy !!! Too sadly, you are right. I only hope Obama will be as vigilant as Bush. We in NYC and the USA woke up a lot after 9-11, and their are great leaders who see this peril, Bloomberg, Lieberman, McCain and many others, very clearly. Hopefully, with more international support, more countries will adopt your better understanding of this cancer. We mourn the death of our extended Brooklyn family and all Jewish victims of the Mumbai attacks. Never Again !!!
2 | Stan Goodman, Israel, Tuesday Dec 02, 2008
To "Fred NYC": I take exception with your statement that "We in NYC and the USA woke up a lot after 9-11". If that were true, McCain, and not Obama would be preparing to move into the White House in November. The fact is that most Americans are treating 9-11 as though it never happened, and (as Michael Moore says, "Move On".

Alas, yes! But also name a nation that G_d loves, has always loved and always will love, but which has rejected their G_d and all that He has given them and done for them over more than 3000 years. It is sad, indeed, to see the mess that they are now in and the multitudes ranged against them. But G_d IS still in charge of their destiny and His (good) will for them will come to pass. Do not give up hope!.

Pirkei Avos states 1:14
"If I am not for myself, who is for me? And when I am for myself what am I? And if not now, When?"
2:3
Be careful with those in authority, for they do not draw a person near except for their own needs. They appear as friends when it is to their advantage, but they do not stand up for a person in his hour of distress"

name a nation other than Israel who has nukes but tolerates rockets on its cities daily.
name a nation other than Israel who ranks among 5 best airforces in world who can't and won't defeat proxy terrorists.
name a nation other than Israel who sells sophisticated arms to the world but can't defeat its enemies in battle.
name a nation oh forget it. games over and lost.

You are so very correct. While the U.S. individuals agree with you, and we do weep and mourn on our faces, the nation's policies are moving more in line with the U.N.'s pacifist views. Obama has promised to do the opposite of what we hope for, saying he will talk with tyrants, close Guantanamo, cancel the missile defense program, reduce our military involvement, etc. I think he's waking up to some reality, but he already scared me today when he let us know "...but I will be setting the policy". I imagine he'll often be reminding people, "I am the president!". It comes with inexperience.

First I want to pass my condolance to the families of Gavriel and Rivka. I can wait to see the day when the whole world will wake up from their long nap and do the right thing. To be unified and combat this new cancer called terrorism and stop giving excuses and calling them freedom fighters or militants. They should be called for what they are: TERRORISTS and COWARDS who kill innocent civiliams who are just minding their own business.
9 | venky, Tuesday Dec 02, 2008
Islamic Terrorists have changed their game plan. They no longer take hostages. They kill ruthlessly and indiscriminately any one and everyone. It is time for general public to change our attitude towards Islamic Terrorism. We should no longer duck and hope that we be saved from the perpetrators indiscriminate bullets. Should we be in a situation with a terrorist, instead of ducking we should attack with what ever we have. If the Islamic terrorist faces a crowd that runs at him instead of running away, his sponsors will loose their main weapon; Spread of Fear.

In response to no 6 daniele, name a nation other than Israel... the answer is India.
11 | Fred NYC, Wednesday Dec 03, 2008
# 2, Stan, You are right, Many people in the USA do not see the reality of this threat, but many more do since 9-11, and the world wide terror events since. Add to that, there has never been a war on our soil, and you can understand their unfortunate casual approach. On the other hand, what other country has done more on behalf of freedom lovers, all over the world, and have willingly lost so many lives. Pray for Obama to have a revelation. I know I do. I don't think Michael Moore truly reflects the American sentiment.

We've got to make sure that Jewish institutions like Chabad are better protected. Nothing can be left to cance. Never again!

It is regrettable to see before our eyes these days what is happening to Israel. I guess we as Americans and as well as Europeans have forgotten already WW2, and those horrible days. Even if no one knows biblical history it is self evident of what is occuring in our world today. The targeting of Israel by fanatics who want to destroy Israel for who the, Jewish people are and who they represent, not just a Democratic free society, but also GODS chosen people as the BIBLE says.
And the enemy of the LORD wants to destroy that which belongs to the LORD.

Jeremy Cardash..what a great article! You have hit the Jewish nerve right on our Judaic hearts. As you state in your "name a game" explanation of how Jews have miraclulously survived 4000 years with all the enemies that have harassed or murdered Jews...right up until today. To use your name game...Name a time in 4000 yrs of Jewish history when some nation, King, dictator, or vicious group somewhere in the world has not tried to harass or kill Jews. Great article and Emmes!

The right thing for India to do, is increase its troop strength along its western border. This will automatically make Pakistan relocate its million strong troops, to its eastern border with India. The natural fallout of this, will be Taliban and Al-Qaeda infiltrations and attacks on Nato troops in Afghanisthan. India could then send about half million troops to Afghanisthan to combat Taliban. This would give India access to Pakistan's western Border, and we could legally enter Pakistan along with Nato troops to combat terrorists. This will give India a vice like grip over Pakistan.

You are right, Jeremy. I'm glad someone says it. Even non Jewish are sick with the sickly excuse of the continual global denial over anything to do with Israel or Jews (be it the existence of Israel State, or achievements of and terror against Israel/Jews, etc etc). Quietly, these people keep moving forward creating history and genius inventions. It's only when people take time and examine history do they realize that most of the world's major breakthroughs in any area of discipline have, at the helm, a Jewish brain. God's mandate to Abraham was also to be a blessing to the nations. Gloria!

I am more worried about who is going to protect Europes eastern border against an Islamic tide bringing with it fundamentalists and terrorists. Oh by the way, can somebody please explain when does a militant offically become a terrorist.

Amazing! Your discussion goes straight to the heart. YES, the whole world, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, even the 'moderate' Muslims themselves, is in a state of denial. Denial of the existence of Islamic extremism and how it can destroy the world! And their ire against Jews and Israel is recommended in their 'Holy' Scriptures itself

I can just say that you asked which is that country that has produced so many mathematicians, thinkers and scholsrs. A nation that should be proud, upstanding, strong and selfish in the face of so much adversity. A nation that will one day, with the help of those who are not in denial and don't have their heads in the sand, breed great leaders that will stand up for the blood of their brothers and sisters. YES I CAN NAME THAT NATION AND THA NATION IS INDIA. U can check the history of India that goes back to more than 5000 years and you will get each and every answer that you have asked.

What is this "name another nation" sermon? Do we need to flaunt ourselves arrogantly? Does it help a Jewish student to pass his exam to know he is from the intellectual elite who has won more Nobels than the rest? Does a Jewish Nobel Price winner set out to prove that Jews are better than others? I find this reasonning pretty insulting to Jewish intelligence. I think the author of this article has made a few true intellectuals blush to the thought the share genetic roots with the author. I find him sounding a bit Teutonic for my taste....

to 35 laura. you got to look at the phrase that distinguishes the 2 selves -"I " Ani and " Me " Li
It implies that somehow we can have a self called " I " and a self called ' Me "
The 'I " self is the deepest self. it is our presonalized facet of the Divine image.by contrast, the " Me " is the persona we develop during life,( The outside-Society ).like with Abraham the idea is that only by breaking away from external forces that operate upon our ' Selves " can we hope to come to our true " selves" our destiny. if we do not reveal the ' I " in ourselves- then who are we?shalom Ely Doron

Rohit India has much to continue giving the world, The spirituality of India and Israel is very ancient,as are their cultures. There is much that both have to give to the world. And there is much that has been given. Most people arent aware that there are only 10-15 million Jews in a world of 6.5 billion people. Despite the smallness in numbers, God wants this small people to be an example to others. Despite over 2000 years of homelessness, expulsions from every eurpean country in the past 1300 years one or more times, and mass pogroms, humiliation, degredation, the Jews contribute beyond #'s

Israel and India should have been natural partners in the fight against Islamic Terrorism ...
But successive Indian Govts have ignored the possibilities, lest they offend the Indian Muslims. It is only post 90s that we have woken up and formalized ties with Israel.
I respect and truly appreciate the amazing tenacity and resourcefulness the Israelis have shown in reaching where they are today, post 1948.
There are lessons galore, India and Indians can learn from them. I hope that under the next nationalist govt in India, our relationship with Israel will reach new zeniths.

Hey Israel! The author of this fine article called the USA a worthless acronym. Where do you Israelis think you get all that money and military support from? Answer: a worthless acronmym. Keep biting that hand that feeds you. Keep it up... I dare you....

A good article except for the ending:
Jews as "strong, determined nation, pursuing peace and prosperity, security and tolerance and an example to the rest of the world."
Herein lies our problems: We are trying to be the example to the world, rather than to be a normal nation.
We are pursuing illusory peace and practicing "tolerance" towards enemies who are determined to exterminate.
It is time for us to be a normal nation: Stop being morally superior, stop being victims and fight back defeat the enemies and proudly declare all of Land of Israel as ours! (Arabs have plenty of land!)

In your blog you hit the nail right on the head. Even those states who have pulled their heads out of the sand still have enough of it in their eyes and ears to be deaf and blind to this global Islamic threat. Congratulations on a fantastic article.
