Israel Stories: The Art of Negotiation

This isn't an attack on the Government, may our leaders all live long and prosperous lives in the service of their country and not the service of themselves.

The art of negotiation,  or the art of getting what you want, is a skill that has been perfected over many years by business gurus, but has yet to take into account what I call the 'princess factor.'

The 'princess factor' also called by some 'my little prince factor,' is a skillful and uncompromising, almost savage, negotiation technique between two hardened parties - you on the one side and your kids on the other.

The G8 in its trade negotiations uses it all the time. One side has a little tantrum and the other side gives in. The government makes endless use of this tactic, releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from its very effective prison system, by giving in to every demand even when there is only the slightest hint or threat of a tantrum.

In fact, the government has so perfected the 'princess factor' that it seems to give in even when it is not negotiating; I think it is called "good will."

We have to make concessions, sometimes very painful, but surely only if we can have something in return, you know small things like recognition, the right to survive, the right not to be murdered, trivial stuff.

"Oh", they cry, "you wouldn't understand what goes on behind the scenes the tough negotiation, the diplomacy and the painful concessions."

To be fair, when I feel there is the slightest discontent brewing in our happy little home I immediately start the pacification process offering bribes and promises just to diffuse a potentially explosive situation.

Take the swimming pool incident or "debacle" as history will recall it. The word 'swimming pool' was used in a completely different context, but my kids got it into their pretty  little heads that I had promised to take them. I tried to reason, negotiate and bribe but to no avail.

Truth is, I was tired and couldn't be bothered but that didn't seem to bother them. Then the 'princess card' was played. One spontaneously exploded into tantrum-land, one ran to her room and slammed the door and one grabbed hold of my leg crying and wouldn't let go.

A three-pronged attack that would make even Neptune's trident seem impotent, using every one of the three princess factor negotiation techniques; tantrum, cold silent treatment and puppy dog eyes.

Needless to say we swam that afternoon.

I couldn't help thinking, as the kids clung and pulled at me in the swimming pool, what would the government have done?

Well, release some prisoners for a start.

corrupt condescending arrogant israeli leaders think they are superior to the arabs. This leads israel to make stupid concessions in order to patronize arabs that israels think are inferior to them. The fact is that the bribe taking corrupt israeli leaders have destroyed diaspora Jewry and now are destroying israel Jewry. Wasnt it the man called golda who said we can forgive the arabs for killing our children but we cant forgive the arabs for making us killl their children?

Happy The Jew- Self hating Jew? I think you missed the point of this very funny blog. The author clearly cares more about the country and the government and realizes the impossible position they are put in on a daily basis. But of course they are all just corrupt, condescending & arrogant to you and the Arabs would have us all live a pastoral, ethereal, utopist existence……….. blown to pieces.

Israel has some very difficult times ahead. The weak leadership currently runnig the country has forgotten the important rule that you don't negociate with terrorists. It's current dealings and the second Lebanon war has left the impression that Israel is weak. There is no doubt that this will lead to future confrontations as two terrorist groups arm themselves on the north and the west of Israel. I'm beginning to question if Israel has the will (or the leaders) to survive the coming challenges. Somebody respond and tell me that they do, please?

Mike, of course they do! You concerns are legitimate but after 2000 years we wont let them throw it away.

Rosanna UK: Considering Journalists are not allowed in Gaza we seem to be getting plenty one-sided propaganda from the pro- Palestinian journalists who are in Gaza, note the BBC. War brings suffering to both sides (Israel's is ignored!) The responsibility for that in Gaza falls squarely at the feet of Hamas and their perverse left-wing supporters. No wonder they throw away their shoes! The amount of weaponery and bombs amassed by Hamas thru the tunnels is enormous, they have been preparing for war over a long period of time, they don't give a damn about their own who are but human shields to them!
Tim, Far East: "My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge." Diaspora Jews will one day hear the voice of the Shepherd and realise that their host countries are merely guardians and that their real destiny lies in Israel. Of course, anyone is free to reject Mashiach's voice at the appointed time, and even those in Israel shall be held accountable for their own decisions when YHWH comes. Be that as it may, nobody should support Israel blindly. When Israel forgets itself amidst the nations and acts against Torah, then then must be reminded, but this war is clearly self-defence against violent terrorists.
Mark: Melissa 120, if there's any gray area on this issue it's in your eyes. Mick 119 is correct and all free nations [West or East] are in peril, so be " loyal" to that if it eases your nerves....Israel is only one of many future targets...
