Burning Issues: Religious education Posted by JPost.com staff
Comments: 29
About 'The Road to the White House' Question #5The cost of education has become almost unaffordable for parents who send their children to parochial schools, Jewish or other. No one is asking for the state to pay for religious studies. Americans want to keep Church and state separate. But what is your platform/plan/program to assist parents who want their children to have a religious as well as secular education?Contributors: (read it all or click on name to read post) Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico (D) Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York (D) Former Senator John Edwards of North Carolina (D) Senator Barack Obama of Illinois (D) Senator Joe Biden of Delaware (D)
While our nation's government must be secular, we cannot and should not strive to remove religion from our public lives. Most of us are devoted to our God and inextricably linked to the values and teachings of our religion. Parents who wish to provide their children with a religious education certainly have the right to do so. The challenge for the next President will be to help these parents find affordable options while keeping government at an appropriate distance. It will take some creative, out-of-the-box thinking, but one thing is clear: we need to stop thinking like bureaucrats and do what is best for children and families. In New Mexico, we've designed several options that have worked well: New Mexico's Children Youth and Families Department works with some religious day care centers that offer pre-kindergarten. To be eligible for Pre-K funding, the centers must have open enrollment and must not teach religion for the portion of the day funded with state money. Some New Mexico districts offer "Family School." In this model, children attend public school for half the day, usually taking core subjects like reading, math, and science. Parents may choose to have their children attend home school or a private, religious setting during the other half of the school day. We also have a Catholic church operating a charter school that doesn't teach religion until after school hours, and it isn't mandatory for all students to attend. Earlier this year, I signed the Cyber Academy Act, which will provide opportunities for kids to take courses online. Parents may choose to enroll their children in these online courses alongside religious instruction. As Governor of New Mexico, I'm proud of my state's efforts to help parents find the type of education they want for their children. As President, I'll continue to work with parents, educators, and the private sector, finding creative, viable solutions that respect the separation of church of state.
I have been a longstanding champion of charter schools, magnet schools and traditonal public schools, some of which are heavily influenced by a certain culture, set of values or even ethnicity. In New York City, we have many wonderful examples of such schools. I know many graduates of these schools and recognize the fine education they have received. I also support the federal law that provides funding for students with special needs who are enrolled in private schools. So, I believe there is room within the public system to create diverse options. I do not support vouchers that redirect limited resources away from the public system and to private schools.
But I believe we need to invest in our public schools and strengthen them, not drain their fiscal support. And for this reason I do not generally support vouchers. I would prefer to see energy and resources provided for the improvement of public schools, including innovation and options provided through public charter and contract schools, held to the same standards as other public schools, as is occurring in Chicago.
These Coverdell Education Savings Accounts allow families to place money ($2,000 per year) in a tax-deferred savings account, as long as the funds are used to pay for a beneficiary's elementary, secondary, or postsecondary education expenses.
I support school vouchers because they bring competition back to our schools, encouraging public, private, and religious or parochial schools and communities and parents to all work together to raise the level of education for all students. We have a moral obligation to explore all options and to see what works and what doesn't work when it comes to educating the future of our nation. Too many kids are trapped in failing schools and that's unacceptable for a nation as great as ours.

Hillary is a master at saying alot but conveying nothing. I am looking for a candidate that promotes personal responsibility through choice (joe biden). Relying on the Government to provide too much promotes a reliance on an entity that thrives on doing very little with taxpayer's hard earned money. Let me spend my money when and where I want to.

i don't see how this can work; the rich will continue to pay for religious schools and those who can't afford it won't

The gov't must subsidize religious studies to those who want to and cant afford it!!!

To #6: why "must" the government pay for religious studies? "must" my tax dollars go towards religious education? To #4: why is it ironic for an Israeli to support Hillary Clinton? Did Israel enjoy more prosperity and quiet in any period than the 8 years of Bill Clinton's presidency?

To #8: I pay a lot of taxes to my city, most of it going to education. If I decide not to use the public school, it is only fair that I get a voucher to the school of my choice. Israelis may like a candidate, but they do not vote for him. American Jews do. The second Intifada started during Clinton, as a result of his failed policies toward the ME. Will Hilary be good for Israel? Her record during Clinton's presidency indicate that she is not an Israel supporter. She is tied to the left, which is strongly anti-Israel. If you analyze the record, you will find that the most pro-Israeli candidate is Giuliani.

The US & states already support religious institutions by exempting them from taxes. Donations to religious institutions and schools (but not tuition)are also tax deductible; another government subsidy. All children in the US can get a free secular education. Their parents can pay the small amount for an after-school religious program. In the US, private/religious schools are often an excuse to keep one's children away from those children deemed less desirable. Why should my taxes be raised to support these peoples choices?

To #8 Bill Clinton's presidency elevated the terrorist Yasser Arafat to the world stage which led to the intifada and suicide attacks on Israeli citizens. The dangers Israel faces today is thanks to Clinton (and also Jimmy Carter for his handling of Iran). It is also a well known fact that Clinton had an opportunity to kill Osama Bin Laden but passed on it. Today B. Clinton is a consultant for the Arab country of Dubai which pays him millions of dollars and sends contributions to his presidential library.

All High schools have elective courses that are entirely at the coice of the student that are not related to core courses so what is wrong if a student elects a religous course as an elective

Allen, why is it ok to spend taxpayer money for a kid who goes to public school, but not ok if the same kid goes to private school?

#4 Don't pick on Yossi. Israelis are politically inept. Look at who is the PM. Fred Thompson is the best, for Israel.

Some of you are REALLY deranged!! You actually blame Clinton for Yasser Arafat?!! Have you lost your minds?! Take a bit of responsibility for your own actions!! Clinton didn't put Arafat on the world stage. Yitzhak Rabin put him there. The US had no relations with the PLO when Arafat decided to recognize Israel and all of Israel decided to blindly fawn over the Palestinians. Barak took it a step further with what he brought to Clinton namely the maps that apparently made Clinton's jaw drop. Clinton then tried to force Arafat to make the deal before it was pulled since he knew that no one had ever offered anything close to what Barak was talking about. BTW I was a chayal boded and served my full time - just in case someone stupidly thought that I don't understand what the mentality is ba'aretz. The mentality is "yihiye beseder" & "al tihiyeh fryer". That is what got us into trouble at every corner and what Ariel Sharon derided as the plague the afflicts all Israelis.

They could make private school education more afforable by eliminating public school, nobody owes anyone an education, noone should be forced to pay tax, income property school tax, if the parents or charities can't pay, then their kids don't go to school, or they don't have kids, why should parents sending their kids privately pay for both, without even a tax deduction, public school is communism, forced to pay taxes to support it is fascism.

JK you obviously are left wanting of an education. A countries responsibility towards educating its children is not one out of altruism. It is of supreme importance to have the most educated population in order to protect itself. Without a well educated population, no country would be able to expand or defend itself militarily. Education budgets should be expanded to reflect its importance. It is a long term investment in a country's viability. It should be on par with a country's defense budget.

#12 in Phoenix The teaching of religion in public schools is prohibited by law except for brief mentions of religion within the context of American or World History classes. Even the word "Christmas" is banned on school campuses. You have to say the politically correct term "Winter Holiday" - this in a country where the majority of Americans are Christians. Jews, which comprise 1 per cent of the entire US population, reside mostly in big cities where the majority of students are Hispanic or Black. The Orthodox send their kids to Jewish schools and wealthy Jews send theirs to private schools. The remaining secular Jewish families who can't afford private school will enroll in charter or magnet programs which are usually in Black or Hispanic neighborhoods (the magnet program was set up for racial integration). So there will never be more than a one or two Jewish students in a public school classroom. Many of these kids have one parent who is not Jewish. Why would they care about learning Judaism in a public American school anyway?

To respond to Jon, nobody needs to pay to feed, clothe, shelter, insur anyone else's kids, that should also go for education, especially since there is so much contention with the curriculum and its social purpose, chuck it, this is not the Soviet Union, or Kibbutz noone has to pay for other people's kids, or pay twice, period, it would eliminate so much garbage from the public discussion.

All your candidates are bought and paid for by the New World Order, except Ron Paul. So vote Ron Paul for president 2008 if you want to get rid of the Federal Income Tax! 911 was an inside job!

If I am not mistaken, we rank in the top 5 for what we spend per child on education, yet every year it seems our academic ranking is falling. So...I don't think it the amount we are spending. Many of those who settled this country were taught in the home until, age 12, 13, 14 and then entered college. I think home education is the way to go. We home schooled our daughter 1st-12th. She graduated '06'. She was hired just out of HS, to a job that required a two year degree. The people were so impressed w/ her work ethic, her people skills and her ability to learn, they hired her. That is not what impresses me about her. It is the fact that we were able to instill an old fashioned work ethic, a care and concern for the elderly and the poor. Have you walked into a public school lately? I don't blame the kids, we have a generation of children that were raised by absentee parents... G-d has given us, the parents the responsiblity to teach & train our children. If you home school you can teach your faith & values. There is so much support out there now. I think it was the best way to spend the last 12 years of my life. We are so close to our daughter because, we know her, that takes time.

As MUCH as I agree with killing of the Jihadists, who are making things worse and who are making those lives of both Israelis and Palestinians miserable, I want you to think about these 7 issues: 1. How will religious education handle the killing of religious people? True, they are MURDERERS, but religious too? 2. How can Israelis defend Mozes laws, that teach that "you shall not MURDER" and, therefor, on what basis will Jews keep that claim on a Holy Land? Israel is NOT a country based on the Torah or the Talmud, for Mozes laws are BROKEN? 3. Killing those Jihadists won't help? Not a bit? It won't solve any problem? Therefor, another question is: what is needed to convince Palestinians of the need to make peace with Israel? What's a turning point in their minds (of the Palestinians) that will make them know that the track they are on won't work? 4. Isn't the killing of Palestinians - for very understandable reasons to us - ALSO a big tool in the hands of them, the Palestinians who don't want peace? 5. As ALL Abraham's children are (now) MURDERERS according to Mozes, how will it be possible to turn back the clock? 6. How can that "religious right" in a country like Usa keep preaching in the name of God when they too cooperate in many ways with MURDER? How can they be so sure about them going to "heaven"?? 7. Isn't all that killing ALREADY that 1 final nail in the coffin of zealots, who say one thing and do the opposite?

Drain the public school system? Use your tax dollars to teach my child? Please, by all means, keep your tax dollars..all I want is my tax dollars back (voucher) so I can teach my child as I see fit. (private school). Did everyone miss the news flash in 2006 that stated the Department of Education lost (misplaced) 30 million dollars?!?! Keep sinking your tax dollars into that hole, give me mine back so I can give my child a quality education instead of being pushed through a corrupt system controled by liberials and special intrest groups.

Democrat Barack Obama is the only real religious figure in the upcoming elections in the US. He is a sincere Christian who looks for peace among different religions and is the only candidate that has opposed the Iraq war since the beginning. He would do much more than any other candidates in the area of religion and educating our nation. He is a much more "real" person that is aware of the major culture differences and looks to find a way of more understanding and more importantly, a peaceful relationship with all foreign nations. Hillary is simply a script-reader that is a great person, but not a leader of a very powerful nation in today's advancing world. Obama needs to win. The real problem is that even if he does, he doesn't take office until Jan. of 2009 and people are talking of the Revelation soon to come.. I sure hope your praying. |
