A-vital Blog: Get the ball rolling

Those of us who favor the renewal of the political process in our area welcome president Bush's short visit to our area.

Any visit of an American President to Israel can only be a source of joy and pride for us, but in this particular case the visit goes beyond bilateral relations.

The bonds between the US, a superpower, and the small, young State of Israel are without precedent in the history of international relations.

It is said that the then Secretary of State William Rogers told the late Lea Rabin that the special relations between the US and Israel only fall behind the very deep ties that bind America with Great Britain.

While this may have been true then, it seems that over the past decade US-Israel relations have surpassed them in closeness and intensity. Yet, as mentioned, the purpose of President Bush's visit this time is not the deepening of bilateral ties.

The background is the bloody conflict which remains an open wound in our area. Much to our regret, not much progress has been made since the Annapolis conference. Moreover, Fatah forces - belonging to our moderate partner - have been involved in murderous terrorist attacks against Israelis. So, once again, it is regrettably up to our American friends to come to the rescue, bridge the gaps, and present some new proposals that can get the ball rolling.

One of the ideas most discussed lately is the stationing of third party troops in the West Bank. This idea has been raised in the past by many international actors, as well as by Israeli politicians. It has its attractive side, since any additional forces engaged in curbing terrorism and enforcing law and order can only be beneficial.

However it poses risks (especially if their mandate is restricted) as it may limit Israel's freedom of action which can potentially be dangerous. The idea should be therefore considered with care and carried out only as long as Israel can maintain its vital security interests.

In this context, I believe that the time has come to acquaint President Bush and members of his team with the recent initiative of the "One Home" movement, which seeks to pass the legislation of a bill that will grant West Bank settlers who wish to return to Israel (within the 67' borders) payment of early compensations.

Upon completion of large portions of the security fence, many citizens will find themselves beyond it and justly feel insecure. They should be given now, as part of this process, the possibility to settle in Israel and build a new life for themselves and for their families.

Excuse me for asking, but what hope do you think this whole mishigoss has when your so called "moderate" partner keeps trying to kill you? The Jews you want to leave the Shomron and settle in Israel? They ARE in Israel. The land G-d promised the Jewish people. Abraham didn't shop at the Azrieli Center, he lived in Chevron, a city Jews have to take their lives in their hands to visit, because of YOUR government's and total lack of Jewish morals. The current government is an embarrassment.

Here is another idea. Hashem gave this land to Abraham and the Jewish People. We need to demonstrate to the Arabs that this is our land and they are guests. If they can not behave they need to be removed. Let them set up their state in Jordan! Too much Jewish Blood has been spilled to allow these vermin to be allowed to have an independent state. Just look at Gaza and that is what the "Palestinian State" in Judea and Samaria will look like! Why can's you see this?

The left still refuses to come to accept reality and finally acknowledge that their pursued policies were a succession of Monumental failures. Oslo, unilateral retreat from Lebanon, the illegal retreat from Gaza should, if not make them smarter, at least have teach them some humulity..but not so.. they are about to persevere in their mistakes...but we fortenuately can count on the Arabs to shake us once in a while back to reality...

I don't think the Ieft in Israel knows that Oslo , the roadmap has one fatal flaw. A penalty for non complainance for the PA. The only condition placed on the PA was that they were to fight/stop terror attacks on Israel. In order to force the PA to do this I propose that Israel pull out of the west bank in stages and that the next stage of the pullout will be delayed 1 year for each terror attack ( including rocket and mortar fire)

As citizen of the United States, I too am proud of the bonds between American and Israel, but it’s still not as it should be. Neither America nor any other country in the world has a right to parcel Israel’s land under the pretext of peace; whereby, usurping the covenant God made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Jewish history is clear and God’s covenant never included the Palestinian settlers for any portion of Israel’s land. Therefore, who are these pathetic nations that would dare come against the God of Israel and not expect a fair recompense for their part. Take heed! Advocate4Good

Herbert Kaine, Hebron, Israel: It doesnt matter to Colette if Israel makes the wrong decision. She can always go to France. The rest of us Israelis will be stuck with the consequences.
Shmuel: This article is so poorly written. What kind of people do we actually have in the Knesset? The citizens in Israel need to stop following like lambs and start demanding responsibility from the elected officials. This can only be accomplished by having a system similar to the USA whereby, each region will have congressmen and senators who are responsible to their regions. This way they will not always have to follow the party line for fear of losing their Volvo.
Yossi Shomron, Nitzan Israel: I'm not surprized Colette Avital would emphasize policy and de-emphasize character - this from a k'nesset member who laid a wreath at the grave of Arafat (y'ach shmo) in Ramalla "out of respect". What about the respect for the thousands of Jews killed by Arafat's PLO? Character matters in choosing the leaders of our country.
