Majoring in Aliyah: My friends are the biggest threat to peace in the Middle East Posted by Lahav Harkov
Comments: 30
NOTE: 'Feeling the Hate in Jerusalem' has since been removed from YouTube due to "terms of use violation." UPDATE: I made a video response to the video I mention in this entry. Check it out! Sometimes, when someone says or does something idiotic, even if you find it personally offensive, the best policy is to ignore it. However, when it gets over 200,000 (and rising) hits on YouTube within four days, it's hard to ignore. "Feeling the Hate in Jerusalem" is not a video that I could just live with. I was trolling the Internet the other day, looking at some of my favorite blogs, when I came across an interesting video. Max Blumenthal, a blogger on several left-wing websites who recently wrote a book slamming the Republican Party, decided to post what he called "the most shocking footage I have ever filmed." ![]() Image from the video Blumenthal went around the Ben Yehuda Street area in Jerusalem with Joseph Dana (an American-born Israeli who writes a pro-Arab blog) after Barack Obama addressed the Muslim world in Cairo. They interviewed young people in bars and cafes on their reactions to the speech. Most of the people in the video are American, dressed like frat-boys, and visibly inebriated. The video (it's too expletive-ridden for me to embed) shows the subjects using obscene language and racial slurs to describe the President of the United States. Dana wrote that "the people represented in this video are not members of a fringe group or simply drunk college kids. These people reflect the sentiments shared by many people in this country and this city." Here are some choice quotes from the video: "He deserves to be shot." "My grandma was in Auschwitz, Obama! We're not going to take any Nazi BS!" "Oh, he's a Muslim for sure, and who even knows if he was born in the United States? We haven't seen his birth-certificate yet...He's like a terrorist!" (The same girl, a Political Science major, was asked if she knows who Benjamin Netanyahu is. Her reply: "I don't know who Benjamin Yahoo is!") This video was posted on popular blogs such as Gawker and The Daily Dish (Andrew Sullivan's blog at The Atlantic's). Popular rapper 50 Cent posted the video on his blog, and wrote: "Isn't it sad, in 2009 people still think like this." The Huffington Post put up the video, and then took it down because it "had no news value." I have to agree with The Huffington Post. Had the video shown Israelis speaking in this way, that would be one thing. To show Americans in Israel, most of which look to me like 18-year-olds on their gap year, and say that they represent the opinions of young Israelis, is absurd. I wouldn't even say that this reflects the views of most young Americans in Israel! Sure, sometimes we can get drunk and loud - anyone who's been in downtown Jerusalem on a Saturday night can't deny that. Of course, one also cannot deny that alcohol often makes people behave in a more extreme and belligerent manner, a fact that Blumenthal and Dana chose to ignore. In any case, I'd like to think that my peers have a little more class than the few people shown in the video. I'm no fan of Obama's, but you wouldn't catch me saying any of those things even in the privacy of my home. Most of my friends - young new olim - do not speak like this, either. Usually, the words I hear describing Obama's presidency in relation to Israel are "depressing" and "scary." I've never heard any of my friends use the n-word, nor have they discussed killing the President of the United States or any other political figure, even as a joke. This video did not just personally offend me by defaming the "group" that I am a part of. It inflames anti-Semitism and anti-Israel sentiments that are on the rise around the world. A person who has never been to Israel may watch this video, and get the following mistaken impressions:
Yet Dana and Blumenthal insist that
Now we know what Netanyahu is up against: People who produce idiotic videos, and ignore the real threats to peace in Israel, such as Hamas, Hizbullah, Iranian nuclear weapons, etc. One of Israel's biggest problems today is Hasbara [Public Relations], and young Jews like Dana and Blumenthal are only aggravating the problem. Too many Jewish people have forgotten what Israel has done for their people. Instead, they try to fit in with the American liberal intelligentsia. Never mind that most Arab countries do the exact opposite of what the American left is fighting for. It's one thing for Obama to turn a blind eye for diplomatic reasons (not that I agree with that, either). It's another for Jewish people to act as if Israeli bigotry is the problem. Israel's not perfect, and I see no problem in criticizing the country when it's justified. This video, however, is not a warranted criticism. I'd like to remind Blumenthal and Dana that this is Israel, not Iran; therefore, people can get drunk and express their opinions without fear of persecution, even when their opinion is the minority. On top of all that, I think the video's producers are giving my peers too much credit. Really, guys? A bunch of drunk Americans are to blame for the Israeli-Arab conflict? I'll try to remember that next time I drink a Cosmo.

I find it odd Mr. Blumenthal chose to interview drunk American Birthright Israel 18 year olds, rather than Gazans... I don't think the Gazans would need to be intoxicated.

I love how someone who writes a blog critical of Israeli policies (...is there a government on earth whose policies are NOT worthy of criticism?) is labeled "pro-Arab" almost by reflex... and thus, it is just as easy to simply write off anything they say as feeble-minded because, clearly, they don't understand where the "real threats" to Israel lie if they spend all their time producing "idiotic videos"... Sorry, but the idiocy in the video did not come from the producer or the interviewer, but the interviewed. Deal.

The Blumenthal Video is mild compared to the Settler videos on You Tube, and the Settlers and not all young and not all drunk.

OK, these idiots can freely express their opinions but their hatred & bigotry is scary. Just as scary as any racist thugs anywhere in the world. Being young & drunk really doesn't excuse their behavior & it doesn't lessen the venom in their words. It definitely doesn't excuse their bigotry or their ugliness, most of which they inherited from their parents. They may not be representative of Lahov Harkov's group of friends but they are representative of a certain type of American in Israel. These are the "ugly American" the world loves to hate. They bring shame on America and Israel.

i think that it's oddly telling that Mr. Blumenthal chooses to use a Cosmopolitan as an example of what someone should drink.

Not a thing different in the video than the daily articles and comments in the Jerusalem Post.

same leftist scandalous strategy - tell a lie enough times, and people will think its true.
it worked for Arafat- and it works for the american and israeli left too. drunk 18 year old bigoted american kids think the same way no matter if the bars are in Jerusalem, Paris, or Washington DC.

The Law, the Torah, states, you shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall not bear false witness. You shall not avenge. You shall not bear grudges. Even for those who love the Torah, and love their Creator this is hard, but possible. For those who have no real love of the Creator, it's probably impossible to close the door on hate and let it "go" as the sun sets each day. So it eats them up and slowly kills them. Sad. Very sad. Isaiah the prophet wrote the work of 'rightness' is peace. Inner peace first, then national peace.

I was horrified to see foolish and bratty post high schoolers- most likely yeshiva for a year types- curse their own country's president (they purposely retain their American cultural psyche when in Israel) and speak like street thugs, despite the fact that most of them grew up in suburbs and priviliged.
However, their hatred of Obama and Muslims expressed is based on response to contemporary events regarding Jews. They do not claim to hate Muslims because of the Torah or Talmud telling them to.
I, an American-born Jew, lived in Amman for six months and found religious-based hatred ...

(Continued from earlier post). I saw theological-based Jew-hatred rampant. From the "books" sold in bookstores explaining the "Jewish nature" and conspiracies against Muslims to imam sermons on the radio and TV calling for eternal enmity against Jews, I found the hostlity to be much more religiously-embedded, than anything these bratty drunkards could spew. How many of them will join Jewish militiant groups when they return to the US or attack Arabs they encounter in Jerusalem?
Many Muslims who hold similar views about the "other" show no reservations in harassing Jews they meet in public

As this incident illustrates alcohol consumption to drunkenness demolishes any hope of keeping the Torah, which is hard enough while sober. Don't know why we need more examples: Noah, Job's sons, Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron who died, which resulted in the law that the priests were not to drink wine, Nabal......and the transient American 18 year olds drifting through Jerusalem.

I am shocked - SHOCKED - that young, drunken oafs in a bar act like idiots! But to paint them as representative of Americans, Jews, or young people is even more stupid. How many hours and how many people were filmed before the director found these clowns? Why weren't intelligent, thoughtful represented? Could it be that the director WANTED to make young American Jews look bad?
By the way, I very much doubt these were yeshiva kids; their mannerism and ways of speaking (besides the obscenities and racism) aren't typical of the (east coast) Orthodox youth I know. And there is nothing...

If you're interested in the REAL source of most of the Middle East's (and the world's) problems, see Noam's comments.

I personally found these teenagers typical of what I see in Florida or New York. The attitude, bigotry and behavior is common in my experience. It scares me that Jewish Kids in America are racist. I see it as a sign of the times.

Odd. Over the years, I've heard/read things equally profane, and MORE so, said/written about Bush, but I never saw or heard any shock from Liberals concerning such views. That kind of language is ugly, no matter who it's directed at, so let's be fair and equal in our condemnation, shall we?
What's more, as far as the young lady not knowing who Benjamin Netanyahu is, Shawn Hannity sends someone out on the street once a week, demonstrating how little American college-age students who voted for Obama know about politics. Some of them can't even name our v.p.

The Borat approach of exposing peoples emotions in a not politically correct fashion should not be used to misdirect the reason why these people are angry. The fact is that Obama is honoring the lie-narrative about Israel and justifying the vilification of Israel. Obama has been speaking like and pushing policies of an International American Uncle Tom as he apologizes for the US on many levels. Any one who thinks that the US (or Israel for that matter) has any inferiority intellectually or morally to Europe or the Arabs is looking at history through highly distorted revisionists glasses.

I grew up in a small wealthy suburb in Massachusetts, population 75% Jewish. The majority of my friends were Jewish, many of whom frequently used words like nig*er, ch*nk, sp*c, etc. and openly embraced hatred of other peoples. Most of them took their Birth Right trip to Israel around age 16-22. Are they a good representation of Israelis or American Jews? Of course not. Are they a good representation of American youth? I'm not sure, but it is an accurate representation of the youth I grew up with. To be honest, I don't want to raise my children in the intellectual isolation of American suburbs

An interesting question is: Would these young men have a different opinion of Obama, of the Cairo speech, and of the tensions between Israel and the US if they were sober? Probably not. The expression might be more subdued but the sentiments would be the same. Many people in Israel are very worried and angry about the direction Obama has taken. Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Saudis are jubilant.

As horrible as what those brats said I take serious issue with the producer of the video. If they really wanted to go and find what Israeli's think about Obama why not go and interview a multitude of people from different ages races and nationalities, but that wouldn't work for there purpose of making a drive by hit piece to shine a light on there twisted liberal point of view.

About 2 hrs. of tape was taken (most probably more). 4 minutes were shown containing less than 4 minutes of this nonsense. Anyone giving credence to the impartiality of the video tapers, one cannot honestly call them journalists, is as foolish as the "political science major" who could not identify Netanyahu. This reminds me of the story of the photographer going out for the first time on the job to cover an individual running for office. He asks his editor before leaving, "Do you want me to take pictures of him kissing babies or picking his nose?"

The real enemy framed by Obama is bigotry, not Israel, not Arabs, not Palestinians, not Muslims not Christians. Ignorance and bigotry goes hand in hand and they exist everywhere among us, our friends, our co-workers, our leaders. This is the real war that we should be fighting. This is a war of the hearts and minds and it is our duty as human beings on this earth to help change this in our short time here.

Bursting at the seams. Sounds like young adults who are fed up with all the Anti Jewish hatred that is constantly shown on tv. newspapers . In Europe the middle east and many other countries. Young Isrealies worldwide need to unite and train imediately least another Hitler arise and everybody just watch like they did in Sudan where this blood thirsty satanic criminals just murdered two million Christians . Had they been trained to defend themselves this Peace loving people would still be alive. Train Isreali train for had the Jews fought ferociously maybe only two hundred thoosand might have died and that's fighting back. If you need a reminder of your latest Warrior just remember ARIEL SHARRON. Also forgive him for honestly beliving in taking the chance of land for peace. It doesn't work as you have found out . Had he known he wouldn't have given them an inch. Theres a saying among Christians .. Give the devil an inch and he will become your ruler.

Also, let's not forget your country's COMPLETE FAILURE to integrate Israeli Arabs into society. I witnessed first-hand housing discrimination that was in every way equal to the segregated south; neighborhoods and kibbutzim who screen new residents for 'suitability' standards that, surprise surprise, no Israeli Arab ever passes.
The government controls FAR too much of the land in Israel, and uses that land to actively privilege Jews over Arabs. It's no wonder that fewer and fewer Arab Israelis feel represented by their government. Again, this is YOUR FAULT. America shouldn't support it.

Mr. Blumenthal interviews drunken kids and then lays it out for all the left wing nuts to absorb. Mr. Blumenthal is interested in everything but the truth. Mr. Blumenthal is not a reporter, he is a propagandist. He feeds the non-thinking what they want to hear. This man brings shame to the journalism profession. If you are fooled by this charade, you need to grow up.

Let's not make excuses! Everyone who is making excuses for these racist idiots should watch the video again and replace the "n" word with an equally offensive Jewish slur and replace the word "Obama" with "Netenyahu". You may not like the messenger but it doesn't change the truth of the message itself, that extremism and racism exists among a certain class of young Jews. These over-indulged American Israeli brats are garbage. I don't defend trash. I take it to the dump or recycle it (You know, break it down and turn it into something useful). You should too.

I can't believe the inane sense to find drunk Americans or any other group for that matter to video and further spread new hatred. What is the purpose of it? To prove you're right? Well, no, you aren't. You can slant anything to any point of view you want. It's easy and that is what you proved. Life is too short to spend time with all of this negativity and hate sharing. There are no easy answers to anything. I didn't vote for Obama but I will say, his speech was very well stated, even if I didn't agree with some of the parts. So what. He is at least trying to do something positive. And You?
