Window on Israel: US public opinion turning against Israel Posted by Ira Sharkansky
Comments: 35
Several friends have cautioned me that public opinion in America is turning against Israel, and public opinion in Europe is more intense in its opposition.
The reasons cited are the ugly pictures coming out of Gaza, as well as the perception that President Obama is upping the pressure against Israeli stubbornness with respect to concessions for the Palestinians. If you actually read my letters, you should have noticed that I judged Obama's speech to be at least as harsh toward the Arabs as toward Israel. Nonetheless, public opinion polls show a strong tendency among Israelis to perceive animosity. Perhaps it is Jewish nerves, overly suspicious about an escalation of threat. It is incorrect to conclude that George W. Bush and Condoleezza Rice never criticized Israel. I recall them saying what Obama said about the need to stop settlement growth. President Obama said that he intends more direct involvement in seeking peace between Israel and the Palestinians. President George W. Bush also said that. Maybe Obama's comments will prove to be as ineffectual as Bush's. Currently, however, a lot of Israelis feel themselves under siege. Teddy Roosevelt described the presidency as a bully pulpit. It may be especially powerful as a leader of opinion when directed against a foreign target. On domestic issues there is more information, as well as sharper opinions and numerous interest groups. President Obama may be moving the public against Israel, while not getting Americans to line up the way he would like on things closer to home. My friends do not have to caution me about adverse public opinion in America and Europe. The news is prominent here. It may have something to do with the bunker mentality. It helps to explain the results of the most recent election, and why there is a prime minister and foreign minister posturing as they are against outside pressure. Some of my correspondents have even written about the end of Israel if it does not behave better. Do they think Israelis will go back to Cairo, Dusseldorf or Fall River? What should happen to the granddaughter of a family from Kishinev married to the grandson of a family from Baghdad? Israelis are tired of hearing only words on behalf of their defense from the United States and other western powers. No great power helped when the Nazis murdered and the Arabs persecuted. The children and grandchildren of those Jews have heard soothing words and demands for restraint in response to continued violence against them, and severe criticism for disproportionate responses. I do not recall any polls asking Israelis if they believe the commitments to their defense expressed by one American president after another. I have seen data indicating that substantial numbers of Israelis feel that the American administration is tilted against them, and that they must rely on themselves. It is wise to consider public opinions in countries that are important to one's own. Just as Israelis should consider public opinion in Europe and North America, so should Europeans and Americans consider public opinion in Israel. The power of governments is not equal, but it is not a zero-sum game. Israel's sense of being the world's target, reinforced by persistent criticism from outside, had something to do with the onslaught against Gaza. Critics discount the seven years of rocket attacks on Israeli civilians, not dealt with by words from the west or moderate responses from Israel. Criticism of Israel's continued blockade pays too little attention to continued pledges of its destruction by Hamas, the holding of an Israeli prisoner, who may be alive but not visited by any outsider in three years of captivity, and the likelihood that any construction supplies allowed in will be used not so much to rebuild housing as to construct fortifications. It is not worth pondering what President Obama really meant in his Cairo speech. The text demanded a lot from the Palestinians and other Arabs as well as from the Israelis. It is also not be worth pondering what Prime Minister Netanyahu really meant in his Bar Ilan speech, which was at least partly responsive to Obama's concerns. Subsequent actions will be more useful in gauging their intentions. Currently both leaders may be paying more attention to the streets of Iran than what either has said about the other. Americans and Israelis both suffer from an arrogant certainty that they are close to the center of world history. Events elsewhere may dwarf the importance of their latest dispute. Good relations between the governments are important to both sides. Each should be alert to the limitations of its power, and be careful not to excite the other's population.

Americans are a very gullible people. With the steady barrage of pro-Muslim propaganda from the US mainstream media and also from Obama's Marxist/Muslim government, American's opinions are tainted by deception. There are many Americans that strongly support Israel and this poster is one of them. Jewish Org's must work harder to educate people about the truth and realities of Israel's struggle to survive against Islamic jihad. Ignorance of the folly of appeasing Islam is deadly to the truth.

Amongst those who are to blame for increasing anti-israel sentiment are left wing jews , both the u.s. left wing media/hollywood crowd of jews & israels looney left media , political parties & activist groups. These negative elements of both US & Israeli society are like a cancer in a healthy body - left untreated they spread. In Israel they corrupt our youth with their post zionist message & encourage our enemies not to make peace with us. Abroad they collect funds to supply our enemies with sustainence & fan the anti-israel flames & with it increase anti-semitism tenfold.

Before 9/11, I , an American, regarded the ME conflict as just another bloody religious war. Then I heard Netanyahu explain that the fanatics hated Israel because it is like the U.S., and I began educating myself. Today, I see Israel as a predominantly rights-respecting society surrounded largely by death-worshiping savages.
I think it is a mistake to cast Israel as a religious state. Israelis should take notes on the American Revolution and concentrate more on the rights of individuals than the idea of Zionism. Otherwise, it's just another bloody religious war. Read Ayn Rand.

Facts are not Israel's enemy; But NOT communicating facts is the problem. Also Netanyahu is dealing with the political momentum from many previous administrations resulting from ideas that land concessions will reduce the conflict. By talking about giving land away, it gives more legitimacy to the idea that Israelis are occupying Palestinian land. If you don't believe the land is yours no one else will. Netanyahu rightfully gave that speech to take the pressure off Israel. But most of my fellow Americans don't hear the Israeli perspective; they hear distorted sound bites.

I 2nd what Not Jewish is saying. The mainstream media & many politicians in the US would have you believe all of the US is against Israel, but it is just not true. A prime example of media bias was in the last presidential election. Many are driven by power & greed, doing whatever is necessary to claw their way to the top. Dave D. in Tennessee is correct stating that milliions in the US still suport Israel. We know the real agenda behind the BS 2 State Solution. Erode Israel a little bit more until it is gone. Remember what happened last time the US coerced Israel into giving up land?

Dear Prof Ira Sharkansky It is a good conclusion that good relations between governments are important. But if the shifting spirit we call public opinion isn't a person, how can government of a democracy be a person? Obama feels the opinion 'out there' of his audiences. He responds to the many 'sprits' of the various groups which are the public opinion of the US which Obama knows is the spirit of public opinion of many nations! But those that love Israel see that what is not for Israel is against. Does Obama think he can take a middle ground on Israel? The fate of Attlee's Britain is a warning

I am a Zionist activist in the US. I haven't noticed any major anti-Israel surge among the population, but public relations are difficult.
I didn't vote for Obama last year. Based on his campaign positions , I consider him strategically incompetent. By now, no one knows where he really stands; his overall strategy has been to speak charismatically but ambiguously so as to maintain maximum open options. Don't be fooled.

Israel has every right to exist and that's shared sentiment of majority of Americans. However, after a trip to Gaza recently and a trip to the West Bank last year, I've grown very critical of our foreign policy and especially concerned what MY US tax dollars pay for. The anti-semitism card gets played over and over and I think Americans are finally getting fed up. Just because you are Israel doesnt mean you get a free pass for killing and oppression of innocent Palestinians. Doesnt the Torah have some bigger life lessons other than this is my God given land so do what I please?

People need to understand, God gave the Palestine land to Israel, it is their land and no one has the right to take that land away. It is the Palestinians who are occupying Israels land. People of Israel do not be misslead by the media you have milliions of supporters in and outside of the US, we are with you. Israel you must keep/hold your stand and donot be little yourself to anyone. If the world will not stop Iran from getting the A-bomb, you may have to do this on your own as you had done in the past, and beleave me when I say, most of the worlds people but not the gov. will be with you.

Israel signifies the people of the book.
However Israel's electoral system is flawed and we see ever changing cliques of mostly secular leaders at the helm.
Same leaders pride themselves in almost everything except in adhering to their mosaic laws especially all important interpersonal laws of accountability to constituents.
There seems to be a kind of drunken revelry in the air that leaders are above the law accountability.
Thus the masses find themselves as victims of lack of housing, job infrastructure, and lack of anyone to turn to when their backs are against the wall.

THe media is making the US population anti-Israel, like in Europe. And the media is most propably used by the governments and intelligence organizations to promote their agenda, which is: "peace" in the Middle East. A "peace" which favors the Arabs. The CIA has for long struggled to reduce "the power of the Israeli lobby", and it has a grip over the largest media providers; so the Americans get "government news" from day to day. The American democracy is a myth; The freedom of the press is thus a myth. The media are being used by anti -israel forces, like in Europe.

Jimmy Carter has been spreading his poison against Israel for years and he gets lot of media attention. I don't think Americans are buying Mr. Carter's viewpoint. When Carter ran for re-election he was tossed out in a landslide, He has never attempted to run again. If he thought he could win he would have run again. Another anti-Israel candidate, Pat Buchannan ran three times and was decisively defeated each time. While there are public figures like these two who blame Israel for anything that happens, they have not found any support outside of the Columbia University mideast department.

The Jewish people suffer much in Israel with the current situation. This is a small state surrounded by Muslim countries. Jews and Muslims should consider about the peace talks and should bring peace in that area.. May God bless both Muslims and Jews

If you think that Obama was as harsh on the Arabs as he was on the Jews then why did Hamas and the PA praise the speech, Why did Mubarek call for not just a freeze on settlements but their evacuation? Obama called for a return to what Aba Eban called the Auschwitz Boarders. He accepted the Arab myth of Israel being created as a response to the Holocaust. He called for a Palestinian state but not a Jewish state. As far as America's commitment to Israel after a peace treaty were signed. Do you remember the film of the last helicopter out of Saigon????

Israel do not believe everything you read in the American Media. They have become the lap dogs of the Obama administration and that of the "white flag" wavers in the American Congress (Pelosi, Reid, Durbin, Kennedy, Franks, Dodd). There are more supporters here within the United States then you could imagine. Our only hope is that somehow, the American Jews will realize that Obama was NOT the right vote and stop supporting him and his mission to destroy America.

Did I miss something here? Who is the pinhead who wrote this piece of propaganda. American Jews turned their backs on the GOP and Bush and voted for the radical who was fathered by a Marxist Muslim -to the tune of 80% last November. And this blogger is tired of mere words on the part of Americans. Why don't you blog that to the families of the 4000+men who died in your neck of the woods fighting an enemy dedicated to killing you, your family, and your nation. Needless to say I'm just another Yank re-evaluating america's position with Israel and the Middle East.

You're all way off base! American Jews voted for Barack Hussein Obama, the son of a Marxist Muslim by 80%. that's right! The GOP, the party that sent 4000 of our guys to your neighborhood to die fighting an enemy bent on destroying you, your families, and your nation was rewarded with a measly 18% of the American Jewish vote. And this blogger has the nerve to say he's tired of mere words from the West! As an American Republican party memeber, perhaps it is time to re-evaluate are policies in the Middle East!

American opinion is not "turning against" Israel but is changing. Look, Israel has had sixty years to try to make peace with her neighbors on her own. Israel would not even have peace with Egypt if we had not stepped in (thanks to our often criticized Jimmy Carter). We are just reevaluating how we are viewed in the world, what is just and what we get out of our long-standing friendship. Perhaps, Cast Lead (& the lack of a free press during it) was a revelation for some. Perhaps, it is the reality that the still unresolved Palestine issue is a used for terrorism recruitment the world over.

There are many in the US who support Israel and we were shocked that American Jews supported Obama...we tried to warn them. Don't believe the MSM garbage...Obama doesn't want to 'mettle' in Iran but doesn't mind telling Israel what to do. If 'the people' in all our countries can sweep out of office those whose selfish, globalism and one world gov't ideas are threatening our security, we can live in peace. Peace to Israel!

It is inaccurate to equate what Obama and his administration are saying to what Bush/Rice said. The former has called for a stop to ALL growth in ALL settlements, including East Jerusalem. The latter implied acceptance of growth in Gush Etzion, Ariel, East Jerusalem, etc. and natural growth in even more areas. The conclusions this blogger draws actually run counter to a slew of recent polls which show increased American concern on issues such as terrorism, Iran and N. Korea and greater support for Israel. Obama's popularity will decrease and his policies have already become less popular.

Hey Cat ...did you visit Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Tokyo and Hiroshima! We the USA did a real number on those cities. Did you visit the Israeli town of S'derot in Israel where thousands of rockets were sent in from that garbage dump called Gaza. I 'll tell you this...the Israeli's stopped to soon ..they should have hit Hamas (who hides by civilians) in their tuchass! Next time maybe you can talk Israel into going into Gaza with boy scouts and firecrackers. Anti Semitism ...you bet it is! If the shoe smells throw it out

The disgrace of US Presidents is they are more interest in history recording their personal success in establishing peace in Israel. The real truth is that no earth bound powers will ever bring peace of Isreal. This land, which was given to the Nation of Israel and established by the sons of Issac whoes name God changed to Isreal, God is in charge of every aspect. His eyes have never left His Land and HE will protect it in the future regardles of any thing any man thinks or does.
Note, Esau has no part on the Egypten, bondage, the promis given to Granddad Abraham or any part. Amen.

The impression here in Canada, is not so much that the Israeli government is anti-Palestinian but rather that a few Israeli citizens are stealing ancestral land from Palestinian farmers to make real estate developments. Cries of "terrorism" fall on deaf ears when money is changing hands. The same thought comes to mind about the "security" fences - cutting one Palestinian farmer off from his neighbour, making Palestinian agriculture non viable. -another land grab. For this reason, even Jews in North America are having some doubts- after all, we Jews must uphold the idea of "live and let live."

Jerome Webber (#2): Between the "looney left" and the looney right there's a lot in the middle, one of which is me. But let's not fool ourselves; neither are a "cancer in a healthy body". Israel is not exactly a healthy body. We are currently on course to end the Zionist dream, and we are doing it all ourselves. Unless we agree to a two-state solution, the Jewish people will soon become a minority in their own homeland. And if anyone is dreaming of transferring the Arabs out, or ruling them without giving them voting rights, forget it. It will never happen. Eiither we wise up or fold up.

10 | Cat USA, When the Israelis pulled out of Gaza, IDF soldiers pulled Iraelis out of their houses and gave Gaza to the Palestinians. The Palestinians had the opportunity to prove that they would not create a terror state if given the opportunity. They could have voted for the PA or Hamas. But Palestinians choose the terror group Hamas, who took a the public funds to buy weapons and targeted Israelis civilians with rockets. After all this happened, Israel blocked off Gaza to restrict the number of weapons going to Hamas. Palestinians decisions have unfortunate consequences.

America being anti Israel is not the truth. American people have and will stand with Israel. Obama is the reason we having this conversation. He is not a pro Israel president. I would also impart that the majority of American Jews voted for Obama. Now you tell me why I a Catholic support Israel more than an American Jewish person. I know of no one who is anti Israel within my family or friends. It is time the American Jew come out and tell Obama to support the Jewish Nation. I have heard very little from their corner. In fact I still hear they support Obama.

The land of Israel is the victim of bad press. With so many enemies surrounding it, it seems that the US public should continue to support Israel. Currently, the press is fickle, much more fickle than the US population who love Israel over its neighbours and understand the Israel will always be a good friend to the USA. Even the Palestinian situation is compelling, the US population should be able to look what is happening and understand that the people of Israel would live in peace and prosperity with the Palestinians if that were at all possible.

I want Israel Mossad to investigate Obamas hidden background. Show the whole world what fraud he is. There is a lot he is hiding, all that would scare up the western world and get them to wake up, if they know . Please Mossad, do it, we have to get rid of that pro-muslim, socilist dictator, before he has wiped out USA and Israel.
