It's one of those times that excites Jews' well-developed paranoia.

A sizable majority of member states in the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva endorsed the Goldstone report, and sent it on the General Assembly and Security Council. Supporters will try to get an endorsement from the Security Council to indict Israel before the International Criminal Court.

The resolution not only accepted the Goldstone report on the Gaza Operation, but for good measure condemned Israel for human rights violations in the West Bank and Jerusalem, including the denial of religious rights. (During times of tension, Israel does not permit entry to the Temple Mount for men under an age when they are thought to be potential troublemakers.)

Not even Richard Goldstone was satisfied with the decision of the Human Rights Council, insofar as it did not condemn Hamas for its violations.

The delegates who voted for the endorsement came from Argentina, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Cuba, Djbouti, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Mauritius, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Africa and Zambia. Some of these we should discount as international good-for-nothings allowed to yell and scream, but not permitted by the rules of the game to do anything serious. Saudi Arabia is tolerated on account of its wealth, but also kept from serious damage by existing rules and norms.

Some speak in double talk, endorse what the Palestinians want, perhaps to keep some of their own people quiet, but deal with Israel. Jordan and Egypt are prominent in this group. China, India and Russia are important for Israel, but do what they have to in order to satisfy their other interests. None of them is on the verge of taking serious actions against Israel. All are more violent than Israel in dealing with those who threaten their own regimes.

Indonesia has no diplomatic relations with Israel, but we have encountered large groups of Indonesian Christians in our favorite Jerusalem Chinese restaurant. The Philippines enjoys the foreign exchange earned by thousands of its people working here as care givers for the aged and infirm.

Altogether, the votes in favor of endorsement are just part of the international background static. Not pleasant to the ears, but not likely to affect one's quality of life.

Meanwhile, things have turned bad between Turkey and Israel. Turkey cancelled a scheduled joint military exercise involving Israel, the United States and other countries, on the grounds that Israel must be punished for its actions in Gaza.

At about the same time, Turkey scheduled a joint military exercise with Syria, and the Turkish prime minister headed off to Teheran for high level meetings. A government-owned television network broadcast a drama portraying Israeli soldiers as wanton killers of innocent civilians.

While some may view this combination of events as catastrophic, others see the extreme nature of these actions as portending more damage to those who initiated them than to Israel.

Turkey will not suffer great harm directly from Israel. The labor unions that for years have purchased group rates for their members at holiday hotels in Turkey say they will be directing their people to Greece and Bulgaria. That may put a small dent in Turkey's foreign exchange earnings.

But by cozying up to Syria and Iran, Turkey can probably say goodbye to its aspirations to join the EU, and is likely to hear some harsh words, and maybe more, from the United States. Such moves by the Turkish government may also provide enough reason for the army to come out of its barracks and once again take control of the government in order to save the country for Ataturk's vision of a modern, secular society.

The damage to Palestine, on the other hand, is likely to come directly from Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu has threatened an end to the peace process if the Palestine Authority worked to turn the Goldstone report into something serious. Insofar as the United States has been critical of the report and voted against its endorsement by the UN Human Rights Council, it may be difficult for the White House to demand that Israel overlook the Palestinians' recent actions.

With a few exceptions, we can ignore the noise. It is easy to judge as disproportionate the hostility expressed to Israel's efforts at self defense when the most outspoken critics are far less civilized in dealing with those who challenge them.

The most recent few days in our lives began with an evening of Brahms by the Israel Philharmonic, conducted by Zubin Mehta. The next morning we went north, staying at a tiny kibbutz in a simple room without a TV. As retirees, we could remain home on Succot, let the crowds wander the Galilee, and have the area to ourselves when everyone else went back to work. There were not a lot of tourists on the roads, but we passed numerous industrial parks, and saw heavily loaded trucks showing a lively economy at work.

We took in the sights during the days, and ate in a multi-cultural mixture of Druse, Christian Arab, Circassian and Jewish villages. We enjoyed the food and conversation, heard perspectives different from our own, saw a different country, but sensed no misery or hostility.

There have been confrontations with the police in the villages of Isaweya and Shuafat, in and around Jerusalem, and there will be confrontations with the ultra-Orthodox about that parking garage that is open on Shabbat.

Israeli society is manageable, although it falls short of Paradise. "Manageable," though, is a higher standard than that enjoyed by most of the countries whose delegates routinely vote against Israel.

Those who fulfill something in their lives by hating Israel will find comfort in the votes at the Human Rights Council, and the condemnations by Turkey. More important for us are the tastes and conversations of a varied and functioning society.

This man has his head in the sand. He thinks by giving everyone a little slap on the wrist, and of course not excusing the victim for his naughtiness as well, that everything will soon be forgiven and forgotten. Dream on!

The world repeatedly condemns Israel for its less than kosher activities towards the Palestinians while people like Ira Sharkansky sleeps comfortably at night saying 'poof, we don't care, life goes on." Well, not so for the victims Ira. Road blocks everywhere, house demolishings, seiges, humiliation, death and destruction everywhere. There is blood on the hands of people like Ira who refuse to look the truth in the face and spek out to prevent the slow slaughter of another people. Shame on you.

Teapot, describes Israel well. And a tempest in a teapot is fairly serious if you are in the teapot. which you are.

The Chosen People who are a light unto other nations should shun inflexible exceptionalism and integrate with the world as the other non-Jewish races are still in awe of people who are doing Agriculture in the desert and within a span of 61 years have made Hebrew a living language.Out of nearly 215 Nobel prizes, the Jews have won almost 185 of them in various disciplines. The world needs the intelligence and enterprise of the Jewish people. The "Land for Peace" and the Two-State solution with Israel-Palestine existing side by side is the best option. Time is the key to success !

The Chosen People or the People of the book who are doing Agriculture in the desert as in the entire Fertile Crescent, Israel is the only place where there is no oil.The Jewish People have made Hebrew a living language in a span of 61 years.Ezra the messenger of GOD is a revered soul for us also. The Jewish People have won nearly 180 Nobel Prizes out of the awarded till today. The "Land for Peace" is the best option as intelligent people have to make concessions as success depends on the ability to suffer fools. The Two-State solution is the best option. Time is the key to success.

Peace is intangible unlike Land says President Shimon Peres. The Goldstone report equates Israel's Pre-emptive strikes and self-defence strikes with Hamas' provocations. But Terrorism is the weapon of the weak say the under-privileged.The State has the right to maintain law and order but human rights violations should be avoided.GOD says in the Psalm, there is a season of war, there is a season of peace which was quoted by Former Prime-Minister Yitzak Rabin when he signed the Oslo accord with Yasser Arafat. That is the right way forward for lasting peace.

Israel will get the recognition of the 22 Arab countries,if it withdraws to pre-1967 borders.Peace will come if the desire of "Greater Israel " is abandoned and an independent Palestinian State is created. The violence by Hamas in Gaza is condemnable but the delay in resolution of the Arab-Israeli dispute is the reason for provocation. The Two-State solution should not be delayed further. The Jewish-Muslim problem is one of perception rather than reality.Terrorism is due to Hyper-Asabiyya or solidarity. It is more a socio- economic problem. We need to give peace a chance.Time is the Key !

It should be clearly understood by those realists in modern democratic society of the vissicitudes of some political leaders who say one thing and do another..In Europe and in particular in the UK we are well aware of the double dealings of Prime minister Gordon Brown.Recent controversy regarding MP'S expenses are indicitative of such corruption among Browns colleagues, and then there is the problem of some of his ministers, who are linked with controversial dealings in property buying with taxpayers money and claiming expenses on their second homes. His stance on UN Human rights was predictable.

Yes lets punish Israel for defending itself in Gaza. After all its ok to fire rockets into Israel, only 10,000 of them. It's about time the UN -Human Rights commitee take the Hiroshima bombing in Japan and Dresden! Or how about Iraq's incursion into Kuwait! The Vietnam Mai Lai incedent should be revisited too. China murderous adventure into Tibet should qualify also. And I see Ban ASSTER is posting his bulls..t again. His bowels should be in a tempest!

A Fair Deal is impossible in International politics. In Foreign Policy there are only permanent interests, no permanent friends or foes.Israel should shun inflexible exceptionalism along with seeing that it attack only military targets in self-defence, not civilian or innocent people. The people who are law abiding and peaceful if caught in the cross-fire raises the issue of human rights.Pre-emptive strikes also should be on military targets not soft targets or civilians.

Shahab Mohd,I know that India is a "ally" and friend of Israel..but you're kidding yourself .If the bastards of Islamic terror would stop and Israel is recognised as a "Jewish State" then a Two State solution is possible.I remind you of your delicate position with Pakistan (having a hell of time with Talibans(the same as Hamas).Don' t forget Shahab,India created Pakistan for all Muslims and a Islamic nation was born! And u guys in indias still are at it fighting over Kashmir and other borders. Some day u will see Indian troops fighting along side Israelis vs Islamic terrorists.A pox on them.

Everybody forgets conveniently that over a million arabs live in Israel as citizens. And they live better than their poor brethern in Caro, Damacus, Amman, and many other arab MUSLIM nations. And they are "Muslim/ Islamic nations", and whose kidding who. Israel is honest enough to admit it is a "Jewish Nation"! I saw so many mosques in israel when i visited there it boggled my mind! And these same lucky arabs are a potential 5th 6th and 7th column! Watch em like hawks..oh Israel! Saul of Jerusalem..I dont see you running to live in that shit house called Gaza!

Laine Frajberg Montreal: Response to John R #10, Why not set an example John and return the southwest to Mexico which Pres. Polk STOLE fron Mexico in 1847?You Americans called it "manifest destiny".The rest of the world called it THEFT. Till then you have no right to criticize Israel for taking-and keeping- land in a DEFENSIVE WAR.Now go away!
Laine Frajberg Montreal: Response to EdB #1, Hey Ed,didn't your country steal northern Georgia from the Cherokee in 1838?You did this even though the Cherokee were at peace with you and your own Supreme Court declared that the Cherokee had a right to retain their land.Didn't make any difference.General Winfield Scott expelled them anyway-and over a quarter died on the way to their new homes.Contrast this with Israel, which took east Jerusalem after being attacked by Jordan on June 5,1967-so indeed Israel's Jews have every right to build anywhere they want in Jerusalem.
David USA: Just when did Gilo become part of Jerusalem? Surely not at the time of David hamelech. When and by whose idea was Gilo "Jerusalemized "? Pretty soon Maale Adumin will also be Jerusalem. And why not Ariel ?? The sky is the limit when it comes to gerrymandering. (For instance, Montreal could become New York just at some poltician's say-so, even if Canada objects).
