This post is about some little details of international politics. For our understanding of the current situation we must rely on the media, which does not always get things right. And in any case, the media does not provide the nuances of private conversations, body language meant to decrease or increase the impact of what is said. Perhaps one can rely on the media's portrayal of events, without assuming that it is the whole truth.

The story begins with the Obama administration's efforts to jump-start a peace process between Israel and Palestine. Among the demands made of Israel, both by Secretary of State Clinton and Special Envoy Mitchell, was a total freeze on construction in settlements over the 1967 borders, including the new neighborhoods of Jerusalem.

There followed a series of meetings between Israelis and Americans, and turmoil within Israel. What emerged was an offer by Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu's government to freeze new construction for several months, not including Jerusalem, housing units already authorized or under construction, or public facilities in settlement areas.

Currently it seems the Americans recognize that this is the most they can get from Israel, and Clinton is saying that the US never demanded a total freeze as a precondition to negotiation.

Maybe yes, maybe no. We should not expect individuals with the kind of ego that goes with high office to admit failure.

Now Secretary Clinton is saying that the prime minister has offered a landmark concession.

But the Palestinians stopped listening at "full settlement freeze."

Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) is saying that he will not begin negotiations unless there is a total freeze of construction within the settlements, including the new neighborhoods of Jerusalem.

Netanyahu is saying that he is willing to begin negotiations without preconditions.

Abbas is holding to his conditions, which Palestinian officials did not demand for starting negotiations in the past. Abbas is angry at the Americans for sandbagging him.

So it looks as if the Obama administration has, through naivete or by overreaching, actually set back the Israel-Palestinian peace process.

Obama's election campaign featured an attractive collection of promises all over the board, and he has not realized any of the important ones.

It is too early to call him a failure. The issues he faces are politically complex and sensitive, and neither easy nor quick to address.

Nothing has come out of Congress on healthcare, and he may yet achieve something.

Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan have deteriorated. Yet it would be unfair to blame him for these regressions without pondering the actions of the Bush administration.

Guantanomo has proved to be more complex than he indicated.

The economy may be stabilizing, but here, too, is the problem of sorting out the respective contributions of the Bush and Obama administrations.

Getting back to the minutiae of Israel-Palestine, the question is: Does it make any difference that the Obama administration's initial steps have provided the leverage for Abbas to halt the process?

This is nothing more than an excuse for the whimpering Abbas. Previous efforts at negotiations have not gone well, going back to 1993 and 2000 with Yasser Arafat, and Olmert's final efforts with Abbas in 2008.

Abbas is traveling the world complaining about Netanyahu. Yet it is Abbas who is unwilling to show the flexibility that pragmatism demands, or is too weak to resist those demanding that Palestinians remain steadfast to their dreams. His line, repeated at every stop, is that the United Nations, the United States, or other powers must pressure Israel to give him what he wants.

Should we cry at the hopelessness of our neighbors? Snicker at the lameness with which they have failed at violence, bluster and begging for help? Or criticize international organizations and great powers for providing welfare and verbal support for the Palestinians, perhaps feeling that it was the right thing to do, but actually reinforcing Palestinian dependence and lack of concern for their own future?

All of the above.

I don´t think that it matter. Obama is hating the God of Isael and makes jokes about him infront of public, while Emmanuel and Bernstein staying next to him and smile. I can´t understand this really. How many jews are living on this planet ? Is it not nessecary that all must stay together? Obama is a christ from Chicago, and this city is next to Cologne, a city , which brings the Vatikan the most money. In my eyes the pope is the enemy number one for jews. And does an enemy of the jews should rule Jerusalem. Or should the pope be the owner of Mount Zion ? Next to the tomb of David ?

"It is too early to call him a failure." Well, let's look at the record so far. Sucking up to Iran, Russia and Venezuela have thus far brought the US no successes. The US has insulted the Brits and the French, betrayed Poland and the Czech Republic, acted against democratic Honduras, botched the Israeli-Palestinian portfolio, and the Iranian nuclear project continues unabated. The economic meltdown has been averted, no thanks to a reckless "stimulus" bill that's only generated debt (and "jobs created or saved" at almost $1 million apiece). So at the least one can call him "so far a failure".

Only when Pres Obama, Hillary Clinton, Geo Mitchell et al..(maybe even Rahm Emanuel) will learn the sick "M ind of the Jihad"! They will learn what kind of crocodiles they are dealing with! They want iIsrael to leave town like Moses did only in reverse. Only this time there is no Moses, or Joshua. But the IDF IAF and Israel's navy will be the "Messiah" of the Jewish people. Get ready "Hear Oh Israel" ...the Middle East diaster is brewing. Don't hold back...make ":Cast Lead look like a day at the beach! Hit em all Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, Iran! Chris and Ray S. who posted here are right.

What would the people who call themselves Palestinians do if they weren't able to live their lives as victims? They won't find peace until they figure out the answer to that question.

Has Obama done more harm than good? Surely, this is a rhetorical question. Obama has done nothing BUT harm. Both domestically and regarding foreign policy. Under Obama's watch, more than 3.3 million Americans lost their jobs already. He is inflicting massive tax increases and historically unprecedented deficits on America. Obama's foreign policy is an even bigger disaster. Obama has made America an international laughing stock for the first time. Iran laughs at him. Russian laughs at him. Even America's allies laugh at him. However, America's abandoned allies must make alternate arrangements.

I think in all of the negotiatins between Israel and Palestine and the United States one factor has been left out - that is the final solution over the temple Mount. It seems to me that the solution is not only political but religious in nature. It is my humble opinion that Israel should be allowed to have access to the temple mount and to rebuild its temple if she wishes. Only then will the nation be whole in all respects. However, knowing that this is a flash point for the arabs, their must be an outside influence which can solve this problem. It is a difficult one.

This is an extremely well reasoned and strong piece. I believe Mr. Sharkansky has analyzed the Obama Administration's 'contribution' to the 'peace' process well. I also believe he is fair in his overall assessment of that Administration to this point. I would only add that I believe the U.S. should have a total re-think of its policies in the international realm. It should put the 'peace process' on hold. Benign neglect would be best here. It should focus on the Iranian question and also work to secure Pakistani nuclear weapons.

Obama is a complete disaster. The American people put a community organizer in the White House and guess what they have now? A community organizer in the White House! What a surprise!

Excellent article. It speaks for itself that Abbas is not dealing with a full deck. The Arabs in Gaza have lived for so long with aid from 'The World" that is all they now know. Why would they want to stop that from flowing in forever. They cry of the harsh conditions they have to live in, the depravations they suffer endlessly, always at the hand of Israel. It never, ever, ever has anything to do with them. They never, ever take ownership of themselves. The money continues to roll in to them and they do nothing but procreate and kill the jews. What is wrong with this picture? Or am I dumb?

Land for peace is the only way out. Today when the whole world is ours due to globalization, and the Jewish diaspora at a high pedestal everywhere, why these settlements at all ?The Promised Land is sacred but wherever we may be we are our own redeemer, then why the fuss?Power increases through sharing. The concept of "Alia' ensures the Jewish character will remain.Inter-dependence not independence is the key.A famous sanskrit playwright Kalidas said a king or queen is known only in their country but a scholar is known worldwide. Hence Like Albert Einstein, become global citizens !

Paraphrasing "vini, vidi, vici", about Obama it can be said: "incompetence, impatience, ignorance."

Polk STOLE fron Mexico in 1847?You Americans called it "manifest destiny".The rest of the world called it THEFT. Till then you have no right to criticize Israel for taking-and keeping- land in a DEFENSIVE WAR.Now go away!
Laine Frajberg Montreal: Response to EdB #1, Hey Ed,didn't your country steal northern Georgia from the Cherokee in 1838?You did this even though the Cherokee were at peace with you and your own Supreme Court declared that the Cherokee had a right to retain their land.Didn't make any difference.General Winfield Scott expelled them anyway-and over a quarter died on the way to their new homes.Contrast this with Israel, which took east Jerusalem after being attacked by Jordan on June 5,1967-so indeed Israel's Jews have every right to build anywhere they want in Jerusalem.
David USA: Just when did Gilo become part of Jerusalem? Surely not at the time of David hamelech. When and by whose idea was Gilo "Jerusalemized "? Pretty soon Maale Adumin will also be Jerusalem. And why not Ariel ?? The sky is the limit when it comes to gerrymandering. (For instance, Montreal could become New York just at some poltician's say-so, even if Canada objects).
