Since the country went back to work after Rosh Hashana, the airwaves were filled with competing speculation about the upcoming meeting in New York of Barack Obama, Binyamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas. The central question: What, if anything, would Obama wring from Netanyahu and Abbas? Perhaps Bibi would agree to more of a settlement freeze than previously, and Abu Mazan would agree to negotiate with him.

Once the leaders had met, and the American president spoke, the commentary shifted to new terrain, where it will likely stay for awhile.

Neither Bibi nor Abbas gave Obama what he wanted. The president came close to admitting defeat when he spoke of "restraining" building in the settlements rather than "freezing" it, and did not mention east Jerusalem. The process will continue. Secretary of State Clinton and special envoy Mitchell will return to the region, and press Israelis and Palestinians to be reasonable.

Some commentators are saying that Israel will eventually pay a heavy price for refusing to bend under the pressure of the American president. Others are ridiculing Obama. How could he have invested his time and prestige so heavily and achieve nothing?

Actually, he achieved less than nothing. He made things worse.

Earlier, the Palestinians negotiated while construction in the settlements continued. Obama hardened their position by his insistence on a freeze. And he may have spurred a greater rate of construction by Israelis enraged by his demand to freeze construction for Jews in neighborhoods of Jerusalem.

Skeptics will say that Obama's efforts have had no impact. The gaps between what the most generous of the major Israeli parties are willing to offer and what the Palestinians demand are so great as to make agreement unlikely.

So what is the future?

Most likely more of the same. Scenarios emerging from recent events look something like this:

If Palestinians in the West Bank continue to refrain from terror, there will be quiet. The IDF will stay out of Palestinian cities and villages, and remove more of the barriers that hinder movement. Individuals will continue to invest in commercial, industrial, and residential properties, and the West Bank economy will outshine stagnation in Gaza.

Israeli leftists will join the international chorus in crying foul. Some are already saying that if Israel does not agree to a two-state solution, the world will insist on a one-state solution with full rights for everyone between the Jordan and the Mediterranean. That will produce another Middle East country beholden to its Muslim majority, and would mean the end of Israel.

The Israeli center and right will ignore those calls for national suicide. Aside from occasional lip service, the world will leave Israel and the Palestinians to the Israelis and Palestinians.

If Palestinians tire of prosperity without the formal structure of their own state, and begin another round of violence, Israel will respond with violence. If recent events repeat themselves, there will be rubble where there is now construction. The United Nations and organizations claiming to be concerned with human rights will accuse Israel of violating their norms.

Change can happen. It is not wise, however, to plan for a major departure that rests on speculation, often by individuals with ideological commitments. Best to assume that the recent past is the best guide to the near future. The distant future will depend on an unknown variety of local, regional and world events that are impossible to take into account for meaningful planning.

And what about President Obama?

His performance in the Middle East to date has fallen somewhere between unimpressive and embarrassing. It bears the marks of a new leader, with fresh advisers, who charged into foreign cultures with conceptions developed in their own country.

Americans should hope that he does better at home, and elsewhere in the world where he aspires to make his mark.

The Utah parallel. When the inhabitants of the area developed, a viable local economy, local government that was in keeping with the laws of the United States, and agreed to abide by its laws, giving up for example polygamy, then Utah was accepted as a state, a member of the United States of America.

Allow me to apologize for the direction of my president and tell you that many of us here in th U.S. are with you. G-d bless...

I'm still not sure why Americans listen to a President instead of God. I'm also still not sure why Israel listens to a President instead of God.

what about President Obama? He is only instruments for building of peace process in Israeli and Palestinians. Actually, Obama's said word "change" is not only for his doing, for attitude of all people in Israeli and Palestinians to change. Even though Obama Leads and serve with mush of aims, for both ISA & PLST to negotiate for peace, if both of these sides avoid to do; there is no good result. Result is depend on attitudes of all people in Israeli and Palestinians. If they want Peace, Peace will be. if they don't, nothing for all. Even the Earth will be spoil and lost from Planet.

I have serious doubts Obama will do better at home. I don't think he will do better.....anywhere. Is it possible that someone would actually WANT to do worse?

Obama´s problem is that he believes he were omnipotent and ommniscient. However masses of human believe so Real jews and Christians know that there is someone wiser, which wants to come soon We shouldn´t fear Obama or the "worldopinion"... All readers of the Jerusalem Post may be inscribed in the book of life I wish you a holy and peaceful Yom Kippur

Thank the Lord that Israel KNOWS it has been abandoned by the US president and his indecent administration. He's also abandoned Honduras, Iraq, Poland, the Czech Republic, Georgia, UK, Britain, Japan, SK, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. We Americans can't stand the sight of him. Please remember that the majority of Americans who know God, and are familiar with history love Israel and pray for your safety and well-being daily. Please do not think your abandonment is from the people of the US. Please, protect yourselves from our non-citizen, closet-Muslim president!

I agree with Bill Sarpas

This senario seems uninformed. Obama is selling US military hardware to practically every Middle East country with a visa card. The next conventional war will be significantly different(see Wasting US Military Assets, Foreign Affairs). To seek war is insanity, especially when Israel needs the palestinian people (sans Fatah, and Hamas), many of whom are descendents of the Levities and Benjamites as well as Jews. We need to stop the killing permanently.

Be sure that there a many here in US who support and will continue to support Israel. Mr Obama does not speak for the majority here. We are saddened by his responses as late.

I am a big supporter of obama. For 8 years iran has been enriching uranium! Where was America? For 8 years Hezbollah and Hamas are Strong than before? Where was George bush? Please its one thing to be racist and another to be stupid? Wish yu the good luc' God gave u4 a good president.

I am with Chris that killing and war are the least desirable paths to peace for Israel and the mid-East in general, but with a sigh I think Sharansky sums up reality accurately. He isn't advocating war; he's only expressing its inevitability in the face of Arab and Persian actions, and Israeli reactions. And he is correct that Obama and his people make conclusions without knowledge of reality in the mid-East. I too hope Obama does better at home, but he is making so many bad judgments there as well it is appearing as if he's going to go down the tubes.

News Flash: The Boston Tea Party has organized a 'send a pink slip to Washington'. In day one, today, Fed Ex has deliveried 500,000 slips. It is expected millions of pink slips will be sent to their representatives on the hill. No doubt the American Jews are also not aware of this. Maybe hollywood should take delivery and then they'll notice.

Most of American's do not share Obama's position. There are more for support of Israel than the media would publish. I agree with Bill S, we apologize for what the Democrats are doing.

Obama mistook his infatuation with himself to being some kind of real power. He fell on the ME as if he knows how to take care of its problems only to find out that he does not know what the problems are.Building in the Settlemets is not a ME problem. The man is a disgrace to the office,a misfit and a failure.

I would say embarassing . This is a man who is not qualified to be president, The nation now knows it, but its too late. Obama every day you stay in office the U S A gets weaker and weaker. Please, isn t there any way to throw this bum out?
17  |   Chaim, ESTONIA, Sunday Sep 27, 2009
In former USSR - Anyone openly opposing communist utopia was labeled "enemy" or "insane". In today's USA - Anyone openly claiming Obama is incompetent will be labeled racist, so no one dares to say or do anything to oppose Obama. Consequently, USA will decay like USSR did. What to do?

Time has come for Israel to strike.
19  |   Bruce - Coral Springs FL, Sunday Sep 27, 2009
Bibi Do what you need to do to secure Israel. Mr. Obama and his ilk will fade way commencing in the November 10, 2010 elections, and sanity will return.

What Obama does or does not do has less impact than the Palestinian birthrate. Soon the Palestinians will have numerical parity with the Jews which will give them parliamentary majority and the Bi-National State will become a disastrous reality. Israel seems to have a lackadaisical attitude toward such a calamity. What are Israel's plans to prevent this.

As a "right wing Christian extremist" LOL __ I LOVE ISRAEL and pray for it's peace every day. Please forgive America for voting in such a deceptive and useless man. The US paying dearly for his "Change" and his world politics also !!! Socialism is not an option for " Change" in America. Israel DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE !!! Don't listen to our village IDIOT !!!!! May the G-D of Abraham be with you !! Shalom

Has Obama asked the question who is helping the Iranians in the process enriching 'uranium' ?. He acts as if it were not made.

God always stirred up opposition to Israel when they took on the ways of the world. He warned against debt, most interest, insurance, and seeking riches and honors, yet Israel and Jews pride themselves on all those things. The goal in life is not the employment lifestyle. That is bondage and caused the world problems. When Israel stops looking to other nations, God can be their God and Leviticus 26 promises rain in due season and good health and safety for following His word in a garden paradise lifestyle. This is how Israel needs to take the offensive and lead. Divine-Way .com

Much of the comment on this question coming from the US is supportive of Israel, but frightening vis a vis the United States. Encouraging your armed forces to mutiny? "Throw the bum out" when he has commited no high crime nor misdemeanor? Are you really trying to abbrogate your wonderful Constitution and institute civil war? Even if you disagree with all of his policies, he is still the President of the United States. Even if you think he's 100% wrong on everything, HE thinks he's acting for the good of the US. Don't validate an American Yigal Amir!

Polk STOLE fron Mexico in 1847?You Americans called it "manifest destiny".The rest of the world called it THEFT. Till then you have no right to criticize Israel for taking-and keeping- land in a DEFENSIVE WAR.Now go away!
Laine Frajberg Montreal: Response to EdB #1, Hey Ed,didn't your country steal northern Georgia from the Cherokee in 1838?You did this even though the Cherokee were at peace with you and your own Supreme Court declared that the Cherokee had a right to retain their land.Didn't make any difference.General Winfield Scott expelled them anyway-and over a quarter died on the way to their new homes.Contrast this with Israel, which took east Jerusalem after being attacked by Jordan on June 5,1967-so indeed Israel's Jews have every right to build anywhere they want in Jerusalem.
David USA: Just when did Gilo become part of Jerusalem? Surely not at the time of David hamelech. When and by whose idea was Gilo "Jerusalemized "? Pretty soon Maale Adumin will also be Jerusalem. And why not Ariel ?? The sky is the limit when it comes to gerrymandering. (For instance, Montreal could become New York just at some poltician's say-so, even if Canada objects).
