In the context of rising tensions between the Obama administration and the Netanyahu government about Jewish settlements in the West Bank, it is appropriate to look at some details. They may not convince Obama enthusiasts to question whether the president is on the right track. They will not overturn the view held by many that the settlements represent all that is short-sighted and wrong-headed about the Israeli regime. Facts are only one of the things considered by partisans. Nonetheless, they are worth something.

They indicate that Israel has been more successful than the United States in dealing with its security, at less cost to the people who consider themselves enemies of Israel.

One estimate of civilians killed in Iraq and Afghanistan since American and coalition operations began after 9/11 is above 700,000. An estimate admittedly low and partial counts more than 44,000 civilians killed in Iraq alone, only since 2006.

About 4,600 Palestinians defined as "civilians" have been killed since the onset of the most recent intifada in September, 2000. The same source counts 731 Israeli civilians killed.

That makes the ratio of Palestinian to Israeli civilians killed at 6 to 1. The ratio of Iraqi and Afghans civilians killed to the Americans killed on 9/11 is in the range of 233 to 1, or 17 to 1, depending on whether high or low estimates are employed.

Israel is a long way's away from declaring victory in its war against Arab terror, but the picture is one of relative quiet since the IDF entered and left Lebanon in 2006, entered and left Gaza earlier this year.

The record shows nine Israeli civilians killed in past 12 months. Twenty-four Israeli civilians died in terror attacks in 2008. This is compared with an annual average of almost 300 Israeli deaths from terror during the peak intifada years of 2001-03.

The United States is far from accomplishing its aims in Iraq and Afghanistan. Casualties have dropped in Iraq over the last 12 months, but there were still about 200 US military deaths and (from the more conservative source) almost Iraqi 3,300 civilian deaths. In the same time frame, there have been 316 US military deaths in Afghanistan.

Recent items in the New York Times suggest dismal failure in Afghanistan.

It isn't just Taliban violence that Afghans need shielding from. Errant American fire has taken an unacceptably high toll, especially from the airstrikes that American commanders came to rely on ... One particularly deadly episode last month killed dozens of civilians (the Pentagon says 20 to 30; the Afghan government says 140).

With respect to American efforts to improve Afghan security forces:

Among the Afghans, mass illiteracy, equipment loss, crime and corruption . . . have blunted readiness. Immaturity and ill discipline bedevil many units. Illicit drug use persists, and some American officers worry about loyalty and intelligence leaks.

Against this record of greater Israeli than American success, we should ask why the Obama administration is pressing Israel to change course in relation to its dealings with the Palestinians. Charles Krauthammer finds it especially disturbing that the administration is making a point of engaging several prominent antagonists in dialogue, but that it is dictating to Israel.

America will henceforth "start by listening, because all too often the United States starts by dictating." An admirable sentiment. It applies to everyone -- Iran, Russia, Cuba, Syria, even Venezuela. Except Israel. Israel is ordered to freeze all settlement activity. As Secretary of State Clinton imperiously explained the diktat: "a stop to settlements -- not some settlements, not outposts, not natural-growth exceptions."

Over the years, Israel has also provided a better life for the minority within its borders than has the United States. The Obama family and other minorities who have moved into the economic, social, and political elites during the past 40 years should make Americans proud. However, the incidence of American minorities in poverty, incarcerated, with poorer-than-average health and shorter-than-average life spans makes the United States an outlier among western democracies, and less admirable than comparable statistics from Israel.

A useful summary measure is life expectancy. Israeli statistics show that life expevtancy for Jewish males is 79.5 and 75.3 for Arab males. Comparable American figures show it to be 73.6 years for white males (less than for Israeli-Arab males), and 68.9 years for minority males. For Palestinians in the West Bank, life expectancy of males is 71.7 years, and in Gaza 70.7 years. Figures for all races and both sexes in Egypt are 63.3 years and in Syria 68.5 years.

All this helps to explain the responses to a popular internet poll that asked for Israeli responses to the President's Cairo speech. Of the more than 46,000 answers, 7 % thought the speech inspiring and 11 %said that only Obama would bring peace. However, 14 % judged that the speech was more favorable to Arabs than to Israel, and 58 % responded that Israel must look after itself because it could not rely on the United States. To moderator: please publish my US rebuttal. Thanks. "Israel has been more successful than the United States in dealing with its security" Here's a tip for you, sir. If Americans weren't providing cover for your little paradise and expending American treasure and blood for you in Iraq, and supporting dictators in Arab countries to keep the teeming masses of Jihadis from taking over their governments, thereby ending Israel's tea party once and for all...... Israel would be a distant memory. Maybe you should just shut the hell up and be glad you have ONE remaining friend in the entire world.

Hey ed Lets be frank here. The US is in Iraq because of oil {oh yes Saudis attacked the twins and Iraqis cop the flack ]Your support for Arab dictators is about oil. Uncle Sam is'nt supporting Israel because of righteousness. Its doing so because it serves its interest to do so. Whilst spinning Hollywood schmaltz as to what a good friend it is its nothing more then the best interest of America. America sold out Iran, the Phillipines, not to mention Taiwan. When the time comes if The U.S has better options it will sell out Israel without remorse. Touched a nerve there ed? truth always does.

whether Israel is better than the US or not but i totally agree with Ed that the US has sacrificed alot for the safety and continuity of the Jewish State...US is largely condemned by the Arab world because of its support to the Jewish state...yea Israel can stand on its own BUT it's surrounded by alot of enemies who are all bound to erase Israel from the world map...that's when Israel has to be grateful for a comrade in US who is always there to shut up guys like Iran, N.Korea and the rest of the vandals....

I must say, that reading the various pro-Nethanyaho comments on here reminds me of a friend of mine who we had to force an intervention on to stop his drinking. Kicking and screaming at the only friends he had left, totally in his own little bubble. Listen: You are not Gods chosen people. The settlers are criminals, not patriot frontiermen. Reality demands that you change your course, and start thinking in a 20 year perspective. Got it?

Israel needs peace. What she refuses to do is commit suicide in the face of outside anti-Jewish pressure. I've read comments that she should "heel," "obey," "comply," with the wishes of the United States. That's not the role of a staunch ally. Israel is a sovereign nation that in the end must make her own decisions regarding the well being of her citizens. Although deeply appreciative of American aid, friendship, and support, Israel is not an acquiescent vassal of the U.S. She is an independent partner of the United States in a region of many bad guys that hate both our nations equally.

Re to #1 Ed from Tennessee. (Part 1) Your vulgar and hostile comment aside I think US support for Israel was essentially motivated by the strong believe it was in the US best interests, certainly not for Israel's beautifull eyes! There is no free meal in this world. The actual adnministration seem to think otherwise and actually distances itself from Israel by playing the Arab card. It would not be the first time the US bed on the wrong horse! They for instance supported, armed and equiped the Taliban in their fight against Russia..and that back-clashed against the US.

Re to #1 Ed from Tennesee (part 2) By chosing to cajole the unreliable, unpredictable, Arabs at Israel's expenses the US will soon find out about their tragic mistake..and earlier than you can imagine! You chose an ambivalent president, one who isn't made of the same traditional American texture, one who is not entirely black or white, nor entirely Christian or Muslim, nor entirely American or Kenyan, one who hide his real origine etc. That is the president Amercans put their trust in...You are in for future big and bad surprises with that guy. I hope my leadership will have the guts to resist

Israelis learned the hard way to fight terrorists, they have over 60 years of experience in preventing attacks on civilians. El-Al is the best in preventing attacks on travelers. The world, Americans included have a lot to learn from the Israelis.

Life expectancy is an interesting statistic. It is the sum total of national health care, personal diet and exercise regimes and inner peace (according to some studies it gives 15% extra longevity). Israeli health care from reports seems better than US, but inner peace may be the real answer. The US has fought many wars now where they initiated action far, far from their borders (both with US troops and in proxy). Has this entered the psyche of the people? Why do so many Americans carry guns? Why is American music so now so loud and angry? When has the US recently not had soldiers fighting?

Why am I the only one to point out the utter travesty of reaching out to Arab countries when women in those countries have no civil or human rights at all? Someone wrote that "settlers" are criminals when the most criminal regimes in the world are the Muslim ones. Islam even encourages violence against women-JPOST had a video of an imam describing how much physical violence can be perpetrated against disobedient wives-to the point of describing how big a rod can be used to beat her. Nothing Israel does compares to the crimes of violence committed every day against women in Arab countries.

God knows many Americans love Israel. Some comments here ignore the huge and loud conservative Christian lobby and the Jewish lobby that has a lot to do with our actions towards Israel. My first thought when Iraq was invaded was that the madman no longer is able to give out 25k for Pali homicide bombers. To ignore that our voices constantly in our politician's ears has helped Israel is just flat our wrong. Every time the US vetos a UN resolution against Israel, many millions of us rejoice, many more millions that Israel's entire population!

Is Isreal better at security than the US? Absolutely! If my neighbors kept launching rockets into my backyard, then I would become proficient in security too. American is too concerned with what everyone thinks. Isreal is acting in the best interest of it's people as it should be. American could learn from it's ally in the Middle East.

Yes Israel is better at security. Israael has its back against the sea; at its narowesr point it is only ten miles across. It is surrounded by blood thirsty Islamic fanatics. America is different, and more distant, with an ocean between us and the Mohamadans. You are the front line in the war, we are the reserves. Yes, Iraq is partly about oil. But it was also about trying to give the Islamics a taste of freedom, hoping that they would see the light, and turn from the dark side. Islam is evil. G-d is the light. We are sons of the light; they live in the darkness. That is the difference period!

There are millions of Americans that support the country of Israel no matter what our new president says. We know that the Palestinian and Islamic terrorists will never be happy until Israel not longer exists as a nation. We are the scapegoats for their people's miseries that they themselves cause. Hopefully God will keep both countries safe until the Golden Boy is replaced in our next election.

America has not lost any blood for Israel. It did not support Israel when it was founded and attacked by all the Arab counties. It belatedly supported Israel as a counter to Russian influence. It did however go to war to free Kuwait and protect Saude Arabia from Saddam. It went to war in Bosnia to protect the Albaniam muslims. It went to war to depose Saddam and help the Iraq people overthrow Saddam. Lots of American blood and money to protect muslims and arabs

Chris USA: If the UN is successful with the Goldstone report the muslims nations will begin erroding Israeli sovereignty by compromising the IDF command structure and nibbling away at Israel's assumed nuclear repertoire until eventually this nation becomes incapable of defending itself. Through a process of economic and financial leveraging eventually its jewish character will be assimulated into Islam as has happened some many times throughout the years to various individuals. How long will people like you be able to stick your head in the ground and pretend time is on your side? When you speak arabic?

Vladimir, USA: You want a suggestion? It is more than obvious: implement the decision of the League of Nations, create Jewish National Home in Mandatory Palestine. This is the international law that is still not implemented. Stop using political fraud term "palestinians", there are none. Treat the issue as it should be: Jewish vs. Arab conflict, only. Borders must be changed with respect to this conflict. All western Mandatory Palestine must be return to Jewish sovereignty, Arabs must be mandatory resettled to eastern part with compensations and new constructions there. Abdullah to Damascus, Asad out.
