Window on Israel: Hamas has a suicide wish

Hamas is now claiming responsibility for nine attacks that killed 26 Israelis from 2002 to 2005.

Hamas says that it has kept quiet about its role in these attacks until now "for security reasons." Other organizations claimed responsibility for the attacks at the time. Occasionally several groups boast about the same deed, and it may not be clear who really participated.

What can we learn from this latest revelation?

That an organization that engaged in suicide bombings has a wish for suicide.

Other indications come from each of the homemade rockets, mortar shells and katusha missiles imported from Iran through the sieve-like Egyptian control of Gaza's southern border that Hamas is firing toward Israel.

Residents of Sderot, Ashkelon, and other places that have felt the damage and death, have been mounting as much pressure as they can on the government to "do something." Leading politicians are saying that the army has prepared for an onslaught, and that the "go signal" from the politicians is coming closer every day.

The same politicians have been saying the same thing for months. They repeat themselves every time the Palestinians get lucky and kill someone with their missiles.

We also hear that Israeli politicians have been trying via Egypt to reach a cease fire with Hamas. Hamas has rejected Israeli conditions, and increased its rate of fire.

It is not that Israel is doing nothing. There are troops in Gaza almost every day. They and the air force are killing more Palestinians than the Palestinians are killing Israelis. Israel is maintaining a land and sea blockade on Gaza. It lets in enough food and fuel to keep the people alive, but not much more. It lets some people out of Gaza for specialized medical care, and is saying it will let out some of the young people who have won scholarships to study in the west.

None of that lessens the pressure on the people of Sderot, Ashkelon, or the other settlements near Gaza.

Reports are that Israel offered to conquer Gaza and turn it over for management to the Palestinian authorities of the West Bank. Mahmoud Abbas rejected the offer. He has begun peace talks with Hamas along with his peace talks with Israel. Not so long ago Israel said that it would not continue its peace talks with the Palestinians of the West Bank if they cozied up to the terrorists of Hamas. Nonetheless, those talks continue. There is even a report that Israel and the Palestinians are close to a draft of a peace agreement.

Opposition politicians say that Ehud Olmert is trying to save his political career by reckless concessions to the Palestinians.

There are arguments against a major assault on Gaza. Many more Israelis die in traffic accidents than are killed by the Palestinian rockets. More Israeli soldiers are likely to die in any extensive assault than all the civilians who have died because of rockets in seven years.

On the other hand, continued attacks against civilian centers are intolerable. A government and army are not worth much that does not protect its civilians from threats like those.

Sooner or later, it is likely that Israel will provide Hamas with the suicide that it wishes. The humanitarians of the world, led by the United Nations Secretariat and other organizations will cry foul. European and American politicians will demand restraint, and increase their pressure to stop after a week or two.

Even if Israel kills hundreds of militants associated with Hamas and other organizations that operate from Gaza, as well as numerous civilians who get in the way, it will not solve Israel's problems once and for all. Those rockets are cheap to make, easy to carry and fire. In all probability, they will continue to fly toward Israeli civilians even while the IDF is killing Palestinians in Gaza.

That is our life. Friday evening we marked the onset of Shabbat with a great meal, and conversation about charges of corruption against the prime minister, an impending war in Gaza, and the prospect of nuclear weapons in Iran. There were also a few words about the American presidential campaign. With topics like those on the table, no one talked about the food.

Does anybody think the U.S. would do what Israel now does in th face of ongoing deliberate rocket attacks at civilians? The U.S. nuked Nagasaki, Hiroshima for a lot less, but its leader had gumption unlike Israel's politcal party cronies appointees most scandal ridden, unbelievers in anything else but their very own comfort.

Iran may have ordered Hamas to provoke Israel into a war to threaten a 2-front war if it attacks Iran. Israel can fight a 2-front war if it abandons the notion of a ground war in Gaza. Israel needs to draw a grid over Gaza, drop leaflets over the Strip ordering civilians to flee to the beach, and then begin a systematic artillery barrage into each square of the grid. Hamas terrorists will die in their bunkers. The now homeless Gazans will need the UN or the Arab League, or whoever, to resettle them in other Arab-Muslim States, emptying Gaza and solving the Gaza refugee problem.

Olmert is a curse to Israel at this point in Jewish history. Everytime Israel "gives up territory" (like the settlements in Gaza) conditions get worse for it's citizens. And the shandi (shame) is that Olmert only gives and gets nothing in return. How come most posters in the JPost knew this and Olmert and his cronies don't? Go figure!

Not that it is that simple, but technologically one of the only sensible actions to take is Rocket Interception, be it Iron Dome or whatever. Once implemented, the current arab threat is considerable reduced from both West and North, a giant plus, reducing any remaining local leverage from Hx2. Remaing threat from Iran is nuclear tipped rockts offset by the Arrow 2/3 systems and the IAF plus Israel's own rocket forces.Rcket Interception is complex given short duration flight time and small distances.Could Israeli settlers also play a part providing settlers with similar rockets to fire at wil

My heart is with you and everyone in a land I have not yet had the pleasure to visit. What touched my heart are the words in your last paragraph concerning your Sabbath night meal where everything was touched on but the meal itself. As a Jew living in the states, miles away and hours behind please know that I stand in the trenches with you. Shalom

The fight is coming anyway let's just get it started. Take Gaza, no country can work broken into 2 pieces ( West Bank ). Tell the people to leave and carpet bomb the whole place. Then move in and kill the rest of the terrorist. Let Gaza see it's future of peace in Israel's hands, it looks like a nice piece of land. As for Iran, countries have gone to war for less, Iran is asking to be wiped off the map and the world would be a better place if the mullahs were not in power.

An excellent sentiment, hasan. But so far palestinians, whether nationalists or islamists, have not chosen to recognise Israel as a Jewish state. The main issue is that of the 'right of return'. With it, Israel is not 'Israel'. But past that, you have issues of borders, settlements, killings, security, water--all these things, and on the other hand there is so little common ground to bridge the gaps or come to a mutual understanding. I do not think it is possible for the palestinians to achieve statehood in the foreseeable future. It will be death and killing for years on end.

Nancy, Jerusalem: Good analysis of the situation! May the one true God, who watches over Israel and never slumbers nor sleeps, guide our leaders during this critical time of history!

The Prophetess: Yes and at this era, if he meddles he could get himself shot, Kennedy did, there are times when a man goes to far, and there are consequences. Being presumptuous is running ahead of God and you dare not do it, you have to understand history, and there are many mature men in Ysrael who do, and if Obama ignores that reality he will commit the sin of presumption and then it does not matter what you call him his decline is guaranteed.........like Sharon, Arafat, Rabin and even to an extent Bush.
