Israel's status as the Promised Land, and a central site in the history of Christianity and Judaism has helped this little country a great deal.

It has also caused some problems.

Israelis welcome support. We are less united in our view of foreign politicians with messianic visions about a future we should embrace.

Bringing peace to the Promised Land is an admirable goal. By now it should be obvious, however, that politics and religion do not mix well. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and the road to peace in the Holy Land must traverse a Via Dolorosa.

The Muslims also have a stake here. It may not be as central to their history as in the case of Judaism and Christianity, but it is close. What the Jews call the Temple Mount is to them the Noble Sanctuary, which has moved up to be a point of no compromise since Israel became a thorn in their side.

Israeli news is featuring a report by Gregory Craig, said to be Obama's National Security Advisor, that his candidate will turn immediate attention to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, and not let it rest without personal presidential attention. Along with this is a report that Senator John Kerry, said to be a candidate for Obama's Secretary of State, is concerned that the Bush administration has squandered the country's standing among Muslims. He proclaimed that he and Obama are staunch friends of Israel, and that an Obama administration must repair America's standing among Muslims..

Those are good reasons for applause from the Israeli left. Those of us who deserve the labels of skeptics or cynics may be wondering how much of a problem is John McCain's age.

It has long been said that the support for Palestinians expressed by leaders of Arab countries is, in large part, a way to distract their people from the problems at home. It is easier to rant about Israel than to deal with corruption and poverty in one's own country.

At least some American enthusiasm for the Middle East may reflect a similar process. It is easier to garner attention by dealing with distant problems than with the knotty issues of health care, environment, and economic security among all those interests at home.

The difficulties begin when American politicians and their aides travel far with home-spun images of good and bad, and overlook complexities of a kind that they could not avoid at home.

Now let us hear from all those Jewish Americans who have been loyal Democrats since 1932:

  • Obama is brilliant and flexible. And a good friend of Israel. All will be well.
  • Gregory Craig was speaking for Gregory Craig, not for Barak Obama.
  • Obama is smart enough not to appoint John Kerry as Secretary of State.
  • It is in Israel's interest to be more flexible, to heed its friends in the Obama White House, and to make the concessions necessary to achieve peace with the Palestinians and Arab countries.

Gregory Craig and John Kerry are not the first individuals who have looked at us with messianic visions. So far we have managed to resist, and to survive.

John McCain is only a bit older than me, and I think of myself as a young man.

How has John McCain said he would differ from George W. Bush (Mr. Messianic Vision for Israel) in his policies toward Israel and the Middle East. It is those policies that have created an Iran on the verge of nuclear weapons, and a greatly militarily enhanced Hizbollah and Hamas (and now friendly-to-Hamas Jordan) surrounding Israel, with Syria becoming again a vassel of Russia, which says it is not afraid of another Cold War? It's not John McCain's age that should worry you, but his endorsement of Bush policies, which he promises to continue. Obama is better for America and Israel.

I pray for your country, your people do not deserve the abuse and pursecutions that you have been afflicted under. Your people have hungered and cryed out enough. God is bringing you back to your homeland. My heart gos out to all of you. I am a Christian a follower of Jesus Christ. He loves you all as I do. The Christians over here in the U.S. are trying to help you all.In the Bible Book of Ezekiel 39:6-7 I will send fire upon Magog and upon those who live securely in the coastlands:thus they shall know that I am the Lord. I will make my holy name known among my people Israel

The grey hair of wisdom favors McCain.

Why would the Dems want to recycle John Kerry as Sec of State? They don't owe that guy anything. He was, objectively, a lousy Presidential candidate. His big mouth nearly lost the Dems the 2006 Congressional races. Many of his colleagues, on both sides of the aisle, consider him aloof and pompous. And the Dems have plenty of other people as worthy of consideration as Kerry. I would offer up Al Gore, who, no matter what you think of him, is as experienced as Kerry, and is generally more admired.

I always wanted to ask Obama and very simple question: if Next Week Osama Bin Laden came to you and said that he would stop his Jihad against america if the US would make concessions on land and trade and stop the war in Afganistan and Iraq - and declare peace - would He Accept the offer? this is IDENTICAL to what the americans (AND THE ISRAELI LEFT) are asking Israel to do with Abbas, Nasralla and Ismail Haneyah (hamas). of course it would never be done, the American citizens would DEMAND Osamas head on a platter, and righly so.

Actually, #5 Jay, you need to ask those questions of George W. Bush, not Obama, because he and his far-Right Republican friends are the ones who have been promoting those policies you don't like for the past eight years.

In truth Israeli needs to stop worrying about what is going on in American politics and start looking to our own leadership to do just that ,lead. You this blogger talk of compromise, I talk of leadership who will stand for Jewish rights to the Jewish homeland, no more compromise, 60 years, wars, intifada's I have seen no compromise or change in position from the Arab world(unless we heed to their demands). There is nothing in the U.S. democrat party today that has anything to do with Jewish values whatsoever, They are 1960 radical socialists, who want to "level the playing field" Marxism 101

Wow, I'm quite amazed with what Raz-Tel-Chai said about the Democrat Party in America. I am an American conservative who personally believes in a sovereign state of Israel. But I also believe that it should be up to the Jewish people to decide for themselves if they want to share their land with the Muslim community.....not for our leaders to tell them that. Based on my opinion, I don't understand why someone like Condoleeza Rice will straddle the fence between Israelis and Palestinians.

Chris USA: If the UN is successful with the Goldstone report the muslims nations will begin erroding Israeli sovereignty by compromising the IDF command structure and nibbling away at Israel's assumed nuclear repertoire until eventually this nation becomes incapable of defending itself. Through a process of economic and financial leveraging eventually its jewish character will be assimulated into Islam as has happened some many times throughout the years to various individuals. How long will people like you be able to stick your head in the ground and pretend time is on your side? When you speak arabic?
Shahab Mohd Altaf INDIA: Israel has military power, resilience, but what about providence?Read the history of Pharoah and Moses, the parting of the Red Sea ? Self-confidence is good, but Hubris and vanity are worse than death by a thousand cuts.No army can stop the force of an Idea whose time has come.Palestinian State is long overdue and Israel needs to accept reality.Power has its limits, reason has its limits but Fear GOD as He has no limits.Violence by Hamas is condemnable but the message of the Goldstone report speaks volumes of the situation in Jerusalem, Gaza, West bank and Israel itself.Fear GOD !.
Vladimir, USA: You want a suggestion? It is more than obvious: implement the decision of the League of Nations, create Jewish National Home in Mandatory Palestine. This is the international law that is still not implemented. Stop using political fraud term "palestinians", there are none. Treat the issue as it should be: Jewish vs. Arab conflict, only. Borders must be changed with respect to this conflict. All western Mandatory Palestine must be return to Jewish sovereignty, Arabs must be mandatory resettled to eastern part with compensations and new constructions there. Abdullah to Damascus, Asad out.
