Has Israel insulted the United States by approving construction on some 500 new dwellings in the West Bank, and indicating that construction will continue on about 2,500 others? This against President Obama's plan for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations based upon a complete construction freeze, including neighborhoods of east Jerusalem.

Or is it a reasonable response to a naive American conception that the settlements are a major obstacle preventing agreement between Palestinians and Israel?

Perhaps the Israeli response is appropriate, but presented in a way that is insulting. If Netanyahu was working with the Americans on the conception of a freeze, what he has done seems far from that. And was it nice to announce new construction a day before the long Labor Day weekend, when Americans would be away from their desks?

Those inclined to judge Israel should begin by noting that the decision has the backing of the Labor Party. It is the leader of that party, Ehud Barak, as Defense Minister with responsibility for the West Bank, who is signing off on the permits for new construction.

Those who think that Israelis' style is flawed might also consider the Americans' style. To begin the process by demanding the cessation of construction in east Jerusalem was a fatal error. It provoked ridicule as well as rejection. Arabs but not Jews could build in specific neighborhoods. The Americans were too close to the Palestinian demand that no Jews remain in what they see as Arab land.

Denying Jews the right to live where they want does not play well in this society. It provoked intense opposition to any freeze, and may have led the settlers and their allies to increase plans for West Bank.

What Labor and the rest of the Israeli government have done reflects the frustration of the Israeli establishment with Palestinian responses to offers made by Barak (and Clinton) in 2000, and Olmert in 2008. Palestinian rejections did not come with counter offers. Palestinians have not offered inducements for a better deal. They repeatedly demand actions that Israel cannot accept, most notably the swamping of Israel with untold numbers of Palestinians.

President Obama failed to obtain concessions from Palestinians and Arab countries that would make it easy for Israel to accept a settlement freeze.

Israel found itself under intense pressure to make the concession of a settlement freeze, without getting anything significant in exchange.

The President should know that business in the Middle East, and perhaps in the Middle West, does not work that way.

Explosions in Iraq and Afghanistan do not portend greater success in those places, and he may not be doing any better with his health plan in Congress.

A decade in Chicago politics and two years in the United States Senate may not have been sufficient preparation for the world's biggest job.

I am in hopes that Israel understands that not all Americans are in support of how America's president is handling this situation. There are those of us who totally support Israel and DO NOT agree with giving land to those whom it does not belong. We pray continually that Mr. Obama will gain wisdom and heed guidance from those who understand that it is not any people who can declare this land for or not for Israel, but it is Jehovah alone who can make this declaration. And...that declaration was made many generations prior to a nation called America.
2  |   Morton Friedman Lanham, MD USA, Tuesday Sep 08, 2009
The 'slap in the face' was not loud enough. Perhaps a 'punch in the nose' was appropriate, even if it is not politically correct. Hopefully the Israeli response will be loud enough to awaken the CAPOs in the american jewish community and they will open their eyes to the looming disaster, and I am not just referring to a disaster for Israel.
3  |   Raoul Gamache, Tuesday Sep 08, 2009
Please do not use the words American/America interchangably with Obama/Obama Administration. The vast number of Americans support Israel and its right to act as a sovereign nation and determine its own destiny. Obama on the other hand, does not even recognize the rights of American citizens to determine their own destiny within the borders of the US let alone Israel making its own decisions.
4  |   Vladimir, USA, Tuesday Sep 08, 2009
I completely agree with Jeanne Spath and Morton Friedman. For thousands of years Jews were the subjects of foreign rulers who ordered them where they can live and where they cannot. It is totally disgusting when a foreign president from thousands of miles away issued his authoritative opinuions where Jews can and where they cannot live on they historical homeland. The government of the Jewish State of Israel must not ionly allow, but also encourage Jews to live anywhere in the Land of Israel they want. It is in accordance with moral and international law.
5  |   Heaveson Accra, Tuesday Sep 08, 2009
I think it is not enough. Israel should allow a massive construction program , say around 4,000 building permits, to send a clear message to Obama the naive, his bloodthirsty Pals friends and the stupid socio-leftist world that you don't just wake up one day to start telling Israel where to build and where not to.
6  |   Not Jewish, Tuesday Sep 08, 2009
For every action there is a reaction. I am pleased that the leaders and citizens of Israel have made the decision to do what is in Israel's best interest. Ignore "Dear Leader" for he is not the messiah that gullible Americans were sold on and his popularity is in the toilet. Come 2010, we Americans will vote out Dear Leader's allies and that will weaken his hostility toward our friend Israel even more. I really don't know which I'd rather do, slap or spit in his lying face. Hang tough Israel, you will survive Dear Leader by light years.
7  |   John, Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
It's a two-way street. Obama et al slapped Israel in the face with their pro-terrorist and anti-Israeli position - it's only fitting.
8  |   Chaim - Israel, Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
It is not a matter of "insulting" Obama or Americans. Obama has no more right telling Jews where we can live in Israel than Israel has telling Americans where they can live in their country. Any settlement freeze whatsoever is clearly against what the Israeli public voted for and totally illegitimate. Since the two pro-settlement freeze parties, Labor and Meretz, were decimated in the election, obviously Israel rejects their destructive agenda. Jewish building must be welcome and well rewarded in every part of our land - especially in our heartland of Judea and Samaria.l
9  |   Ed - California, USA, Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
President Obama has an agenda that becomes every day a little bit more clear to the American citizens. The majority now no longer think he is doing a very good job. Israel will be protected by the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob do not be intimidated by Obama a mere man. Israel belongs to Israel and no one has the right to break the country up.

i believe isreal is right.Pls isreal go ahead and build those houses.U are God's chosen people.I strongly believe The Almighty is with you.Obama should read the bible and Understand that he can not cause whom God has blessed.Long LIVE Isreal.Shalom

Carter told Begin that the US did not recognize Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem. Begin replied "The State of Israel does not recognize your non-recognitiion". There are many other examples like this. Carter hated Begin for these things, but that's why God put him in power at that time. We need another Begin. Right now Feiglin is the closest we have. There is not one other politician in Israel with the same confidence in the Jewish position.

Israel owes above all to Himself and Himself only, to decide where to build and what to build on His own land.Period.
13  |   bob-indiana USA, Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
Most Americans support Israel....keep building!
14  |   Jen USA, Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
This wasn't a slap in the face to anyone. Just more of the same old, same old from Israel. Lie to the US. Lie to the settlers. Lie to themselves. If you don't want to call it a lie, what is it? A wink and a nudge? The Israeli leadership is intent on maintaining the status quo... this is obvious. The status quo is no longer acceptable to most Americans or the world. It is time for Israelis to choose- move ahead towards negotiations (and part of that is freezing settlement) and future peace or pander to the zealots and perpetual war. Israelis should stop playing games.
15  |   Sanford Lazar North Wales PA US, Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
Obama has said the US will stop "bullying" countries arounbd the world. Except for Israel he has done that. Obama declares he wants Isreal to stop settlements and has tried to bully Israel ever since. He does not want to "interere" in Iran's killing and torturing of demonsstrators. He does not want to intefere with China in its human rights abuses. No real response to N Korea. No real response to Scotland / Britian freeing of Lybian bomber of Pan Am flight. No response to Chavez take over of free press in Venenzula. No respons to Castro brothers. No response to Hamas attacks on Israel.
16  |   Rick a tax payer Atlanta GA uSA, Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
Israel should quit being dependant on US aid if it doesn't want the US to tell it what to do, if the US stops sending money, you may wish you had been a little more open to US input. You are biting the hand that feeds you, be careful.
17  |   Raymond in DC, Washington USA, Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
"A. Dershowitz" couldn't help himself as he writes, "America simply needs to stop sending money to Israel." And, as usual with his kind, he ignores context and consequence. Ever notice he didn't mention the money sent to Egypt, Jordan, the PA and Lebanon, who collectively get more than does Israel? They never do. Israel "the greatest threat America faces today"? Such a ridiculous claim hardly merits a response. If the Israeli response was perhaps "presented in a way that is insulting", how would one describe the bitch-slap rejection the Saudis gave publicly to Secretary of State Clinton?
18  |   Ken Besig Kiryat Arba Israel, Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
As a sovereign state, Israel has the moral responsibility to address her own interests first, whether this is regarding settlements or an attack on Iran's nuclear program. While it would be nice to take into account American demands, there is no moral or legal imperative to do so. In the case of the settlements, Israel has the duty to attend to her citizen's needs. In the case of Iran, only Israel has been explicitly threatened with extinction by that state and thus has the absolute right to self defence including a preemptive strike, whether Obama or the International Community likes it or not

Who is slapping whom? Obama said one united Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty & reneged on it 24 hours later, Renegned on the US agreement for natural growth (I think Alan Dershowitz said that he supported up not out which is natural growth), gave that outrageous Cairo Speech, awarded Mary Robinson (Durban I hatefest fame) the 2009 Presidential Metal of Freedom, appointed Samatha Powers (proponent of false Jenin masacre) to represent the US on the UN Human Rights Council (which bashes Israel every chance it gets), is building a Saudi nuclear plant, plans on personally chairing the UN
21  |   Sally - U.S.A., Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
Security Council meeting where he has altered the agenda to remove non-proliferation of the named countries of Iran & North Korea while the US IAEA rep says Iran is close to having enough material to have a bomb & while Iran has come out publically again saying it will not discuss its nuclear development & simultaneously putting on the agenda nuclear non-proliferation (the recipe for stonewalling efforts to prevent Arab/Muslim states from acquiring nuclear weapons until Israel is disarmed), etc... I do not think Obama is getting a slap in the face; I think Israel has said enough.
22  |   canadian christian, Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
A. Dershowitz #5 You say that "Israel needs to repay the indigenous people of Palestine". Please understand that the people who are indigenous to the place you referred as "Palestine" are the Jewish people. They have lived there for over 3500 years. They have been forcibly removed at least twice, but have always had a continueing presence there. In 1929 Jews were ethnically cleansed from their ancient cities of Jerusalem (east) and Hebron by the Arabs who then occupied their homes. By international agreement ( e.g.San Remo) Jews have the right to settle anywhere in Judea and Samaria.

i think that israel dont want peace any more :@ they thought that they can delude the world by this demagogy policy :# they want to accelerate the issue of sittlements and to postponed the moratorium in order to make israel a zionism country without arabs :@ the conspirations will not remain .... they must know that israel is for arabs or if they want we can live in peace but thet want to blow us from this earth ::i believe that this world comes to the end soon...
25  |   Ronald USA, Wednesday Sep 09, 2009
Israel did the right thing to not acquiesce to US pushiness. It is called national self determination and not bowing to intrusive US policies. No one can think rationally about this issue without understanding that the US is looking out for the US - not Israel. The US needed a slap -down. She said to Israel, in effect, 'Do what I say on settlements, exactly, or we will punish you.' Leftists who are repulsed by Jewish nationalism and self determination don't like their socialist hero, Obama, diminished in any way. Sorry folks, get used to it. The people of the US don't want socialism.

A punch in the nose would be better. Obama is not america. he is a combination of jimmy carter and saul alinsky. although the american people have a lot of dummies, his approval is already below 50%
27  |   anna australia, Thursday Sep 10, 2009
#5 Ethnic cleansing? A little dramatic dont you think? And a slap in the face to all holocaust survivors, who survived the real ethnic cleansing. And there was no peace before the settlements, and will never be.

The longer Israel clams The One and Only GOD is who/what told them this is your land "Oh Chosen Ones".The more Hate will prevail till the Jewish right's will be looked at as the "Jewish Reich"Lords of the sand pile. The only Hell is what you create yourselves.Hail Cesar!!

American Jews hopefully will not vote for Obama next time. Not much chance for that since they adored Roosevelt in spite of his closing the doors to Jewish refugees escaping the Shoa. American Jews care only about their Jewish centers, not Israel. But the rest of America will not make the same mistake again next time. Bye Bye Obama! It has a ring to it! Siding with Arab terror and wanting to speak to Iran while it builds a nuclear bomb to destroy Israel, the best ally the USA ever had. The only break against two states is that Arabs do not want any Jew anywhere, not even in Israel.
31  |   John S, Canada, Thursday Sep 10, 2009
this is just insane, there is not going to be peace! was there peace when Israel was born in 1948 the Palestinians had the land they are crying about right now, and what did they do they sided with Jordan, Egypt, Syria etc.. in their ideology that "we need to run the Jews into the sea". What makes people think that its going to be any different? Look at Gaza as soon as Israel pulled out did it become peaceful? no!! The people voted for a terrorist organization for their government, any peace deal will be a fruitless attempt that will only weaken Israel.

African Americans applying for the Ivy Ligue colleges get 198 points added to their SAT -- to make up for the difference between the averages for the "Whites" and "Blacks". All Obama's transcripts of standardized tests are hidden from the public. There is a reason for that, he was a very mediocre student. From the time in the high school Obama obsessed with the idea of proving his "greatness". This obsession was used by the leftist liberals. Now that he is "president" he is putting their agenda into action. Leftist idealism is, not realism, and it never worked anywhere.

Domestic U.S. support for Obama's Middle East "policy" is as overstated by the American media as everything else they report about the President. The Obama sycophants overwhelmingly control the "old" media (network and cable TV, east coast and California newspapers). Unfortunately they still consider these news outlets somehow representative of the country's opinions when nothing could be further from the truth. This is not the 70's... and that's hard for them to deal with. They live and speak in an echo chamber with no dissenting opinions allowed. They're out of touch (see health care).
35  |   Eli, Kiryat Ono, Israel, Friday Sep 11, 2009
Obama's obsession with a few dwellings built by Israel shows total lack of understanding about the real dangers to Israel and to the US. Eight years ago today Muslims perpetrated a crime so horrific on US soil. Muhammad Atta and his gang of butchers were not poor or desperate. It is incitement that made them do it. 3 months of incitement in Rwanda ended up in massacre of 800,000; 10 years of Nazi incitement were enough to kill 6 million Jews. This is the REAL problem and it may take generations to cure the sick Muslim world. Therefore Obama's policy is very wrong and dangerous.

you write denying jews the right to live where they want does not play well in this society.well i live in england,a powerful nuclear armed country, and has a powerful army just like israel have .well, i think id rather like to live in cancun mexico,i know, ill get my army to kick all the mexicans out of their homes and move all my family onto their land and occupy their homes.lots of other english will come over and we will get the army to stay, just in case anyone has the cheek to want their homes back!

I apologize for this President & have extreme sadness that right now he is "representing America." But God told Abraham "I will bless those who bless you & curse those who curse you" God is stronger than Obama, so who cares about Obama. One day he will meet his maker. Israel has nothing to prove to anyone, they are the only people who ever survived 2000 years of diaspora without losing their identity & returned to their ancient land intact & w/ their language! If the Jews were willing to cave, they wouldn't have been persecuted for 2000 years, but they also would have lost their identity.

Isreal vindicates once again that Jews people have right to live anywhere in Isreal Congratulations to president Niyanu . Obama's ill moves are costly for the security of non-Islamic countries. The president is riding two boats at the same time: flowers and buddies for dangerous radical Islamic countries which export terror to the world and soft speeches for peace for non-Islamic countries. If he continues this policies, soon world become dangerous place for peace loving people and it is to be suspected that Obamma is paving for a pak_Iran nuclear design to terrorize the world in future

I think Obama must now be pretty sick at heart. I don't see any signs of people feeling anything for him. He tried to be a smart Ass and fell flat on his face. Has anybody noticed his smart swagger when he walks? He wanted so hard to be the BIG PRESIDENT of THE UNITED STATES, and sadly the muslim fell flat on his face. I, for one, will not be sorry to see the back of him. And please America... check out your next President.

I wish Mr Obummer would fix his own home first!! There are still places in American cities that police will not go to after dark! How absurd. Dont let America lose its greatest alli .I have read all the comments and it is very plain that the overwhelming majority support Israel over Obummer. GOD BLESS YOU ISRAEL

NoBama lives in a dreamland and less than a year into his first term, approval and respect for his leadership in the U.S. and foreign policy has fallen dramatically. Hopefully, in 2012 he will not be voted in for a second term. If he remains as President , the U.S. will become just like the EU, socialistic and run by Muslim immigrants. Americans are beginning to realize that there is no hope and change with NoBama. Isreal should not let the U.S., the EU, etc. dictate anything to them. It is Isreali land and does not belong to the Palestinians, who do not know what the word "peace" means.

I am an American; however, I strongly opposed the Obama administraion position towards Israel. I never thought I would see a rerun of the Carter years. He won the election but the "change we see" is not what he was selling. His poll numbers reflect the growing discontent in this nation. He is not to be trusted. WATCH WHAT HE DOES: NOT WHAT HE SAYS. Let the facts speak for themselves. Obama is not Israels' alli and must be held at arms length at best and in incredulous contempt for his betrayal to Israel not to mention America. Mitchell is HIS voice. America is "changing" and about to fall
44  |   Sharon in Kansas U S A, Sunday Sep 20, 2009
A lot of Americans agree with you that President Obama doesn't have enough experience to be President of the USA. And he seems to have a lot of people with bad ideas telling him what to do. We patriotic Americans are trying to stand up to his administration and the rest of the world needs to do the same. Israel is a very special place and should be left to the Israeli's. My prayers are with Israel.

Stop pretending the issue is one of antipathy to Jews. Jews would be welcome to settle in the West Bank as humble citizens subject to local law. This is very different from arriving with claims built upon religious fanaticism to justify buldozing and land-confiscation on the back of an endless and cruel military occupation.

My dear people..Do not count on Barack Obama for anything. He is the new 21st century Chamberlain... I am not Jewish. I am a Jeffersonian Democrat who rejected and rejects the. entire "regime" and it is that of the current administration. Israelis...protect yourselves...Many thousands upon thousands of the people here support you~

With all my heart I love Israel. I love the Jewish people, and recently spent 13 days in the land marveling at the wonder of it all. I am an American citizen. I can certify, for certain, there is nothing "messianic" about any leader of any nation who challenges the rights of the Jewish people to live in peace in Eretz Yisrael. Even complete non-believers with an ounce of humanity should concede the fact they have certainly earned that right. My prayers are with you all, and though you may not consider me a "brother" I pray you'll consider me a friend. May the Holy One of ISRAEL give you peace.

Build the settlements you need, protect yourself, your family and your community. Our President is an idiot with no grasp of foreign affairs . Obama is to young and naive to be a President but we are stuck with hiim for three more years. Do what you need to do and never apologize for protecting your family, friends and neighbors. For what it is worth, I respect you, your religon and your support for the US when we needed a friend.. God be with you.

Israel belongs to the children of Abraham and that includes the Jews and other Arabs. May we all learn to live together in peace. May we unify and not divide. I love the Jews and Israel . Abraham has many children we must obey his words and focus on freedom for all .Psalm 33:20 " Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and shield."
