Candidly Speaking: President Obama: Do not forsake Israel Posted by Isi Leibler
Comments: 42
The disgusting behavior by the vast majority of members of the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) in relation to the Goldstone Report was no surprise. An international body with an automatic majority of Arab and rogue states was not expected to display even a modicum of balance in relation to Israel. It is obscene that an organization dominated by representatives of tyrannies is entitled to employ a title including the term "human rights," which represents the absolute antithesis of the behavior of its constituents. In this case, the Israel bashers did not even bother to go through the motions of mentioning Hamas, concentrating their bile exclusively on Israel. What is far more shocking is that, despite their penchant for sanctimonious statements, most of the West Europeans lacked the courage to oppose the resolution. The British and French, who claim to be friends of Israel, behaved appallingly by failing to lodge any vote. But the real issue is how will the United States respond? In line with his re-engagement policy, President Obama reversed the Bush administration boycott of the United Nations Human Rights Commission. He predicted that US involvement would positively influence the behavior of the Commission. Clearly that has failed, and even proven to be counterproductive. More worrying is the somewhat understated response of the US, not merely to the vote of the UNHRC but to the Goldstone report itself. The US efforts were limited primarily to preventing the report being referred to the Security Council. The Americans appear to have been desperate to avoid using their veto power and being perceived as supporting Israel. In fact, some US spokespeople have been ambivalent as to whether the US would actually invoke its veto at the Security Council. The muted response by the US to the fact that the Goldstone report was unbalanced and that a UNHRC vote endorsing the report would be counterproductive to the peace process is surely not enough. To date, there has been no forthright condemnation of the report by President Obama, his UN representative, or any member of his administration. One would expect a genuine friend of Israel in the White House to reiterate that the State of Israel should enjoy the same rights as any democracy in the conduct of war, no less than the rights afforded to NATO forces in the former Yugoslavia and US and British forces in Afghanistan. All the more so, in a war of self defense, following thousands of rocket attacks on its civilian population. Obama's failure to stand by Israel is all the more damning in light of the submission to the UNHRC by the former commander of British forces in Afghanistan, Colonel Richard Kemp, who unequivocally stated that "the IDF did more to safeguard the rights of civilians in a combat zone than any other army in the history of warfare." Instead of outrightly repudiating the Goldstone report, the US administration has in fact given the report credibility by publicly urging Israel to hold "independent" investigations of alleged war crimes. And just in case the US vote against the UNHRC resolution could be interpreted as being too slanted towards Israel, US National Security Adviser General James Jones has now reiterated the demand that Israel end the blockade of Gaza, even prior to Gilad Schalit being released. There have even been vague hints that instead of vetoing the resolution at the UN Security Council, the US may merely seek to amend and moderate it. Or, just as shocking, the US could use its veto power as leverage to force more unilateral concessions from Israel. Should that happen, Israelis would rightly feel that they had been betrayed and effectively thrown to the dogs by a president who had repeatedly guaranteed he would stand by the Jewish State. The Goldstone report is not merely a vehicle by which those who defend mass murder in Darfur seek to delegitimize the Jewish state and transform it into the world's foremost pariah. It is far more dangerous. It is the vehicle by which the UNHRC is unashamedly and cynically seeking to embolden and empower terrorists attacking Israel and its civilians by denying Israel's legitimate right to self-defense. President Obama: In relation to all the assurances and undertakings you made prior to your election, do not forsake Israel. Now is a time for you to stand up and be counted. ________________________________________________________________________

Obama has 'stood up and been counted'. And only the blind refuse to see it. Only within certain political limits has he demonstrated his true colors averse to jews and Israel. Yes he has covered himself with some 'icing', but underneath is the Wright / Farrakahn core. Philadelphia should have cast doubts, Cairo should have opened the eyes of even the blind.' Stand up and be counted' should best be applied to American Jewry.

While campaigning for president, obama said all the right things to get the Jewish vote but has not kept his word on any of his promises. He has been trying hard to endear himself to the muslim world, totally ignorant of the fact that it will never happen. The US is the great infidel satan and that won't change until obama force islam on us. I fear that he will demand a high price from Israel for his veto. If he does that, international Jewry will know conclusivesly, as if they needed more evidence, that obama is no friend to Israel and the Jewish people.

We have only ourselves to blame. Jews voted more for Obama than Hispanics, and were only outvoted by blacks. Goldstone is a self-described Jewish Zionist. We have rabbis who are fasting until Israel lifts the Gaza blockade (are any Imams fasting until Shalit is freed from his illegal prison?). Jews helped build the UN and were more active in the Civil Rights Movement than any other group than the blacks, yet most black "leaders" (Jackson, Farrakhan, Sharpton) single out Jews for more abuse than other whites. And many Jews are in Obama administration. Where is the golden calf?

Endangering Israel is only part of the problem. This evil president endangers American lives by encouraging terrorism with his failure to stand by true friends and true democracies. .America is not a country that will stand by it's friends. As such, it will no longer have true friends.

Alain Robert. When Hamas sends 10,000,yes 10,000 rockets into Israel,.what would u have Israel do,.kiss the bastards? When a nation is attacked it has a right to strike back and hard. Yes, after Pearl harbor we USA bombed the crap out of Germany and Japan. The USA went 4000 miles after 9/11 to fight the same terrorist rats that Israel is fighting today! Let the rockets stop and maybe the Palestinian jerkoffs will live a better.Sending rockets into Israel was like our 9/11. Israel waited to long, they should have gone in Gaza and kill every Hamas bastard. Same with USA in Afghan, kill Taliban rats!

Mr Leibler..what u write is scary! Pres Obama doesn't understand the vicious mentality of these Islamic radical wahabbis. He really thinks he can talk to them. They even kill each other ...more muslism are killing each other than anybody else..In Iraq ..in Afganistan , in Pakistan, and now even in Iran! Iran.. is that justice or what? What goes around ..comes around! My question is where is Rahm Emanuel in this crazy attempt to mediate Islamists. He of all people should know the mind of these monsters. When will Pres Obama realize we are fighting the same people that Israel is today!

Well said as usual Isi. Thanks for doing your best with your writing and lectures to positively stengthen and unify the spine and minds of our Jewish people during this stormy time for Israel. Great to see Ambasador Oren ignore the J Street weenies today. Even many of the weenies will eventually stand together behind strong unwavering assertive leadership.

The author exaggerates the power of the pesident to hurt Israel. The Democratic iParty is heavily reliant on funds from Ameriocan Jews.. 2010 is a congressional election year and the party will need money. .. American Jews may not give Israel the highest priority in their voting but has responded when they felt that Israel was being treated unfairly.

Never mind Israel. The Assyrians have gone, the Babylonians have gone, the Romans have gone, Hitlers "thousand year Reich" has gone and..the jewish people are still here! Remember G-ds words in Psalm 89 " My covenant will I not break nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips" and Psalm 27 "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up". America's president may indeed have forsaken you - but G-d Himself has promised to take you up and protect you, dear jewish people so "Be of good courage" !

====One would expect a genuine friend of Israel in the White House to reiterate that the State of Israel should enjoy the same rights as any democracy ==== Right. A genuine friend of Israel would tell the friend not to behave like the Vandals of old - who derived their fame by "sacking Rome" . Gaza was literally sacked .

The United States has killed more innocent civilians in Iraq and Afganistan the past five years than Israel has killed innocent Arab civilians in the past sixty years of its existence. The Russians killed more than 250,000 people in Chechnya but the United Nations and the entire world kept silent as they also did when Saddam Hussein was murdering and torturing thousands of his citizens, and Zimbabwe, The Sudan, Iran, and Syria have committed attrocities against thousands of their own people. It seems that the world does not like it when Jews defend themselves against terrorists and murderers.

The US has just caught up with the rest of the world. We all demand you end the occupation. Bibi thought he had got away with insulting the americans but Israel will pay a big price and this is only the start. Gone are the days of automatic American support for Israefs outragious behaviour.

All I can say is thank god my countrymen and my president are finally starting to see the truth. Israel has been using its influence with AIPAC to dominate my country's foreign affairs and even interfere with its own internal affairs. Finally we have a president who is willing to stand up to the Israelis and support the truth. My countrymen are dying in Iraq because Israel wanted to remove Saddam. Obama won't make the same mistakes. We all know that Israel is more than willing to fight to the last American.

Isi the dreamer begging your god not to abandon Israel.
Do you remember that it was your god who created the UN ? If the US were opposed to it they would have stopped funding it and it would have dried up long ago. Wake up Isi !
Maybe if you get on yor knees and daven to Washington your god will hear you ?
It's past time for Israel to seek the Holy One of Israel and give up on her idols which cannot help or save.

Dreamer! Obama is in the camp of Israel bashers. 20 years following Wright, his spiritual mentor explains his position. This is why he joined UNHRC. I could not vote for someone who went to an anti-Semitic church for twenty years unlike most American Jews.

Naomi, how correct you are. Regardless of what happens over this issue, God has most certainly stated his intention to support his beloved, Israel. Israel has done some very terrible and things during her history, horiffic in essence. Yet God says he will not forsake Israel due to the fact he has a love for Israel so great as to not be forsaken. Does this mean Israel can do whatever she wants without consquences, NO. She has been and will be again punished for her actions. Yet God will not forsake her. Its an amazing situation she is in, yet the reality is God will never forsake her. Salut!!

Israel, the only Jewish nation in the world should stop behaving like the policeman of the West in middle-east. It should like Yitzak Rabin did, develop its own foreign policy.USA is the leader of the free world and it has to maintain relations with the Muslim world. The basic problem with the Arab world is they consider Israel as Satan and talking to satan is Evil.Anwar Sadat and Yasser Arafat were different.
The USA has always gone out of the way to support Israel. But Israel should also come forward and create conditions for peace.Intelligent people have to make concessions for posterity.

To David, #16. Bibi gave a polite, diplomatic, rebuttal to Obama's obsequious fawning, kowtowing, to the Moslem world. His Cairo speech was a direct insult to every aspect of jewish history, and he did not even limit it to jewish history. I would equally have expected China to fill the airwaves with their rebuttal. But I guess that the Chinese will ignore him for the empty shirt that he is.

David, that wasn't Bibi's spit; that was Barry-boy's own dribble!
Other than that, I don't know why we are asking barry-boy to do what he is constitutionally ( I mean character-wise) incapable of doing.
He has forsaken everything else he claimed to care for in his past--pastor, friend, granma, van, dignity, honour and country--so what's to stop him forsaking what he doesn't care for--ISRAEL?!
Babies discard their toys as barry-boy discard principles--willy nilly and ignobly!

Isi - as usual your article says it like it is. I would recommend that all who responded to Isi's assessment read Menachem Begin's book "The Revolt". Read how the latest bashing of Israel by Obama and others in an attempt to defend itself from murderers is similar to Britains attempt to bring the Jews to their knees during WWII. Despite our longing to be recognized by the world - Jew and non-Jew - we must have the ability to defend ourselves freely. When sent into combat IDF soldiers have a job to do - let them do it, without fear of world condemnation or danger to themselves.

What Israel did in gaza...starve the people for years then herd them into concentration camps with wire and walls locked the media out and then turned every possible modern weapon (many never used before) on a caged population with nowhere to go (even if they were warned to leave they couldn't) and you have the nerve to say dont forsake Israel? Shame on you its this lack of inward looking from opinion leaders like you that is bankrupting the capital Israel HAD in the world. How many other atrocities caused by others dont make this one right

David - standing up for one's right to lead a democratic state in its fight against terror is not spitting in Obama's face (although when one looks at his chosen advisers, particular those with old Carter connections, this might be what Obama deserves). Obama is at best an appeaser of the those in the Muslim world with terrorist connections. The president should not need to be asked to do the right thing. #5 and #6 get it. I doubt you ever will.

to fred#6 don`t fret ,everyone makes mistakes,#5 gets it don`t repeat mistakes and go forward, you`d think after civil rights were established ,that would have sufficed, for further persuit of this movement would be used as devisive reason for which no race will benefit, hence the aformentioned people. My humble opinion is not that kennedy was great for advancing the rights of people who`s standing should have been determined in civil war,the fact it wasn`t does not honor kennedy but shows dishonor by his predecessors, whites fought democrat whites to free blacks, now were called racists by democrat

Obama is trying to keep a small bull market going. If you plan to keep a car for 10 years you may be willing to pay more up front to get the automobile with the quality, reliability & good re-sale value. If you can reach a person who is slipping into a serious mental illness at the very earliest stages he may respond to the sound counsel necessary to keep him from being institutionalized for life. A person who develops a serious medical problem can requre 1 to 1 care. It's the same in the criminal justice system for a robber. We may have to pay more up front to stop a Saddam Hussein early.

Even in JPost's blog site, Israel-haters emerge. David USA should listen to the words of Col. Kemp; they're easy to find on the internet. I know of no other country that would make telephone calls (!!) to warn *individuals* to leave ahead of an attack. Much as U.S. Jews have loved Democrats, one salient fact about those who voted for Obama seems to be ignored: Who would want a continuation of the ruinous Repoublican runup in national debt, and who could take seriously a ticket that included Sarah Palin?

The Richard Goldstone Report though unfair to Israel is a wake-up call as 9/11 was to the West. The Jewish State needs to come out of the pain of the Holocaust as the world has changed dramatically after
President Obama's Cairo speech where He reached out to the Muslim world in their local Arab idiom. The remorse for the Holocaust in the West is also turning a new leaf with constructive and Inclusive mindset in the discourse whether it is climate change or Globalization.Israel should become what it set out to,i.e." A Light unto Other Nations".Peace is intangible unlike Land but priceless.

Israel is the occupying force, which has stolen the land, the water and the future of a once innocent Palestine people. Comments against Israel's policy are not anti Jewish, anti israel or anti any other person, but simply a disapproval of continued state terrorism.
For too long the USA and EU have been blinded by their pitty for the victims of the Holocaust. The Holocaust is over, Israel should stop hiding behind it and should start acting like a responsible player rather than a thief, tiran and state terrorist.
God loves us all. Shame on those using religion to further personal interest.

I do like what you say thats for sure. I do believe that our president is a musilem but the vast majority of the U.S. people are not, and I do believe he wont be voted back in next round. I also believe America was decieved with this president, with his beliefs. One big problem that we are faceing is America is fast becomeing a nation that is on the fall ,and other nations are on the rise, our dollar is going down. The American people for the most part will not forsake you we are realy formed out of Israel`s beliefs I believe we will be strengthining our relations in the future but not as a super power

Make no illusions. USA needs Israel as much as Israel needs the USA. Israel is the only real democracy in the Middle East and in spite of certain errors (after all Israelis are humans and no human being is excluded from errors), Israel remains a light unto the nations. The greatest mistake that Pres. Obama can commit, is not to fully back Israel, as all American Presidents had done since Israel's birth. Israel and its people had overcome incredible problems since its birth; this will continue Mr. Pesident Obama.

Harry, you need to read your history. In the early 1900's and late 1800's, Jewish zionists went to "Palestine" and BOUGHT land from the people living there. Those people cared nothing for the land, it was barren desert. The zionists worked hard and developed the land and it flourished. Also, when Gaza was handed back over to the Palestinians, the Israelis left greenhouses, etc. for the people to be able to earn livings. Those businesses were promptly destroyed. Why is this fact not publicized in America? Billions of dollars have been poured in to Gaza, why are they still impoverished?

The Jewish state of Israel will soon learn what we American's have learned since Obama's presidency began. He is a liar and is trying to do everything within his power to weaken the United States and to appease leaders of communist states and anti-semetic nations.
Israel, protect yourself and do what you need to do. For God has promised He will never leave you and that He will defend you always. Do not be afraid of the enemies that surround you. The true and living God of the Old and New Testament is for you, so who can be against?

I am a Christian living in the US - Our president may be against Israel, but many people - even Christians believe that Israel is the Apple of God's Eye. We pray for the peace of Jerusalem! We pray that our president's policy fails! We pray that the US will support Israel! Many Americans do support Israel. There is an organization CUFO - Christians United For Israel. We are constantly praying that God will change the president's heart. The president does NOT represent the majority of Americans in his radical views - even though the press would have you believe that he does. God Bless You

Obama is a big mouth preacher who's speeches are just a full bag of air!!! He is like a tree in the wind, leans depends witch way is blowing, he is not doing anything for anybody, just empty talk.Jerusalem was NEVER NEVER "Palestinian" and never will be.What the Arabs are doing is to get Israel out of Jerusalem at any way. The only means they have is media, but everybody is on to them, and the Christians know that the only way they can ever be in they holly places is when Jerusalem is Israeli, other ways the Arabs will destroy anything in Jerusalem that is not Muslim. It happen before 67.

Absolutely correct. Obama has shown his true colors. With issues that are as clear as black and white, Obama has shown he is not capable of making decisions based on truth. No nation on earth would tolerate the things that Israel has had to put up with. History will repeat itself. As in Europe, the new anti-semitic threat will be dealt with severely. Before WWII over 40% of people polled thought the nazi's were okay. Until violence broke out. Violence is a way of life with muslims, who at the same time claim they are peaceful. Obama and company refuse to see it.
