The Warped Mirror: Mohammed Omer's 'truth' Posted by Petra Marquardt-Bigman
Comments: 23
How does it feel for a young Palestinian journalist from Gaza to accept an award named after the legendary journalist Martha Gellhorn? Gellhorn is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding war correspondents of the 20th century, but it has been said about her that "she switched off her sympathy when it came to the sufferings of Arabs. She was entirely committed to the cause of Israel [...and] remained deaf to the Palestinian case." That is perhaps not an entirely fair characterization, because in her famous 1961 report on "The Arabs of Palestine" Gellhorn was by no means "deaf" to the plight of Palestinian refugees - indeed, she left no doubt that she wanted to see their problems addressed and solved as quickly as possible. But as a reporter in Europe during and after World War II, Gellhorn had seen refugees before, and she did not hesitate to point out the "unique care and concern" and "the unique publicity" reserved for Palestinian refugees. She also did not hesitate to argue that the "unique misfortune of the Palestinian refugees is that they are a weapon in what seems to be a permanent war [...] Their function is to hang around and be constantly useful as a goad." Gellhorn passionately rejected Arab and Palestinian claims that Israel should be held responsible for the situation of the refugees and noted sarcastically that the "details of the Arab case vary, depending on the political climate of the moment and the audience. However, the Palestinian refugees always remain the invaluable, central theme. The case is painted the color of blood in the Arab countries: Revenge and Return. For the Western public, tears replace blood; the Arab case rests on the plight of the refugees and is a call to conscience rather than to arms." Almost fifty years have passed since these lines were written, and there is now a "Martha Gellhorn prize" that, according to the official website, "is awarded to a journalist whose work has penetrated the established version of events and told an unpalatable truth, validated by powerful facts, that exposes establishment propaganda, or 'official drivel', as Martha Gellhorn called it." Obviously, Martha Gellhorn intended to tell "an unpalatable truth" when she dismissed the way the plight of the Palestinians was presented by the Arab world as politically motivated propaganda, and it thus rather awkward when the prize established in her name is awarded to a journalist who reports about the Palestinians in exactly the terms rejected by Gellhorn. But Mohammed Omer, who accepted the Martha Gellhorn prize at a recent ceremony in London, claims that it is his ambition "to get the truth out, not as pro-Palestinian or anti-Israeli, but as an independent voice and witness." So what is the truth? How about this "truth" from a recent piece by Omer entitled "60 Years and Counting", where he looks back at the event of 1948 and claims: "All of this occurred within one year - and three years after the end of the Nazi holocaust, an event in Europe where, over a period of six years, martial law, ethnic cleansing and terror were used to force Jews and others who did not fit Nazi ideals into concentration camps. Palestinians now enter their 60th year of such treatment." If Omer believes there is any "truth" in such a statement, he clearly doesn't believe that truth has anything to do with facts. Indeed, Omer apparently believes that whatever story he tells will be accepted as "the truth" - and it turns out that he is not entirely wrong: as an award-winning Palestinian journalist, he can count on an audience that is obviously prepared to believe any story he tells, no matter how many contradictions there are. The most recent story Omer has offered is a good illustration of how easy it is to spread a story that doesn't hold up to even five minutes of googled fact-checking. Omer's website prominently features several articles that tell a harrowing story of how he was mistreated, even tortured, by Shin Bet officers when he recently returned from his trip to Europe via Jordan to Gaza. According to one account by John Pilger, Omer remembers one of the Shin Bet officers "gouging, scraping and clawing with his nails at the tender flesh beneath my eyes. He scooped my head and dug his fingers in near the auditory nerves between my head and eardrum. The pain became sharper as he dug in two fingers at a time. Another man had his combat boot on my neck, pressing into the hard floor. I lay there for over an hour. The room became a menagerie of pain, sound and terror." The next account by Mel Frykberg notes that Omer had fainted, and "[w]hen he came round his eyelids were being forcibly opened and his eardrums probed by an Israeli military doctor, who was also armed." According to the account by John Pilger, a Dutch official accompanying Omer "waited outside the Israeli building, unaware Mohammed had been seized by Shin Bet, Israel's infamous security organisation." Given that Omer was supposedly tortured by the Shin Bet for four hours, the patience of the Dutch official is quite astonishing. However, according to the other account by Mel Frykberg, Omer stated that he underwent the security check "in the company of Dutch diplomats". A Dutch report that is not posted on Omer's website states that Omer "says that the people who arrested him forced him to strip and hand over his suitcase, then squirted a pepper spray in his face. As a consequence he was admitted to hospital in Jericho." Just in case you wonder: the pepper spray is not mentioned in the two reports posted on Omer's website. An Associated Press report which is also not posted on Omer's website notes that "Dr. Diaa Husseini, who examined Omer at the hospital [in Jericho], said the journalist had no signs of physical injury. He said Omer had suffered a nervous breakdown brought on by emotional stress and was given stomach medication and released after two hours." Photos of Omer posted on his website, which were apparently taken in a hospital in Gaza and first published just a few days after a Shin Bet officer supposedly attacked his face "gouging, scraping and clawing with his nails at the tender flesh" show no sign of any injuries in his face. But now Omer claims that he has broken ribs. It's hard to know what to believe when somebody tries to pass as "truth" whatever story he comes up with. But one thing is clear: Mohammed Omer's story of his "torture" at the hands of Israeli Shin Bet officers spread like wildfire: if you google "Mohammed Omer torture", you get 36400 results. One of them is an interview with Omer which offers yet another version of his story. . .One of the new twists on offer is that Omer "felt how it feels for a black African man to be under the apartheid system."

PetraMB these people are not interested reporting anything close to the facts or real events. They are interested only in anti-Semitiic libels. I suggest to you and to the readers to take a look at the Guardian Comment is Free website. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/jul/12/syria.iran?commentpage=1&commentposted=1) You can find there the most disgusting anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli lies and libels (see the posts of Moeran) without any bothering by the moderators. If this is the style of a mainstream liberal European paper what can we expect from the Arab media?

The above mentioned posts have been removed after some hours and after my promise that they'll be shown in the Israeli media. My post disappeared without any trace naturally and I expect to be banned. If anybody wants to see the proof and the original posts contact me and I'll be happy to send copies of the webpages before the deletions. (giorabenamos@yahoo.com)

Any reader who wants to tackle the Guardians Omer/Pilger/Seth-type stories, should familiarize themselves with the Guardians rules and guidelines (see http://www.guardian.co.uk/talkpolicy/0,,210609,00.html). You dont have to like these rules or the way they are applied, but knowing them will help you reduce the number of your posts that get removed. Second (as someone recently advised me), its important to respond, so dont get discouraged. Respond every chance you get and the Guardian will give you plenty of chances (on an average they carry about two anti-Israel articles a day).

Petra. Have you tried to get CI(F) to publish this article???
5 | Babs UK, Sunday Jul 13, 2008
Shalom, Petra. This is an excellent article. Omar's story spread as did al-Durah's and both were dishonest. The departure of the western press from ethical journalism leads to writing for effect only rather than to inform and encourage reasoned debate. Comment is Free exemplifies this, and it encourages the representation of off the wall opinions/lies as facts which, repeated often enough by the haters there, get believed as truth. Its obsession with Israel as the only villain is, I believe, sinister.
Keep writing there, Petra. Yours is often the only voice of reason in a sea of vitriol.

Petra, we don't know the extent to which Omar was leant on to distort the facts in the way he did. Hamas would have little compunction in doing this - it and even a notion of honesty and the truth are barely acquainted.
I am appalled, however, at the ease with which he was believed and his story took on a life of its own. However, that's nothing new. After all look at the France2's account of al-Dura.

Shalom, Ehad Ha'am. With all respect, any semblance of application of the alleged talk policy to CiF's removal of posts is purely accidental. You should also have added that any criticism/reference to the moderation policy/moderators will almost invariably result in the removal of posts.
But I would second your call for posters against Pilgering and Fisking from Freedman and others. PLEASE JOIN THE STALWART FEW who are trying to put the truth out there and counter the lies told about Israel by a newspaper whose founder openly supported Israel. He must be spinning in his grave.

Petra, are you allowed to respond to posters here? If so, what are your thoughts about how press coverage of Israel/Palestinian issues might be compelled to be more honest and even-handed? Don't journalists have to agree to abide by a code of ethics as many other professionals are required to do?
We seem so often to be wrong-footed and having to defend ourselves against false charges. How can we be more pro-active?

repunzal posted the Ha'aretz link reporting the MD's who received Omer at the hospital. The MD is an Israeli Arab, his description of Omer's physical state contradictcs Omers allegagtions. CIF deleted her post. She also posted the Israeli Govt findings of Omer's accusations which showed Omer's allagations to be a pack of lies. Omer contradicts himself but CIF will not allow even his story to be questioned. CIF removed repunzal's post.
Anyone reads Seth freedman knows anyone who contradicts / questions him have their posts removed. Why wont they allow questions ?

Petra. Nice article and well researched. Pity CI(F) didn't pick up on it. Their loss but then, it doesn't quite jibe with their 'world view'.

The media also gobbled up the lie about the Jenine massacre, of which there was none, and no media ever tried to make it right either, after they found it to be an untrue story.
The world is so eager to believe a lie it fits the biblical description:
2 Thesolonians 2
They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

I read the article by Martha Gellhorn "1961 report on "The Arabs of Palestine" and it was quite fascinating. In the 47 years since this publication nothing has changed in Gaza except that it has gotten more hostile over the years. There really is no excuse for Palestinian Arab proplems except their own stubborn refusal to GET A LIFE!
13 | Petra, Bat Yam, Monday Jul 14, 2008
DAVIDBJ1, yes, professional journalists are/should be required to abide by certain standards and a code of ethics, but I guess it's ultimately up to their employer if this is enforced; moreover, there is obviously a difference between reporting and writing opinion pieces.
I think this particular story by Omer, which was also spread by Pilger, is worthwhile following up (I intend to do so), since Omer's/Pilger's version simply doesn't add up; what's even more objectionable is that speculations about Israeli intentions to assassinate Omer have also been added to "spice up" the story.
14 | Julie Wilder, Yonkers, NY, Tuesday Jul 15, 2008
I think the AP piece is well done, and you can read the entire article at: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/I/ISRAEL_GAZA_JOURNALIST?SITE=IACED&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT. Another way to find it is to go to www.associatedpress.com and do an archive search for "mohammed omer."

Hi Petra - I also found this story hard to swallow, and there definitely seems to be a Pallywood air to it. I unfortunately missed the Pilger piece in time to comment there. From the fact that Omer was being awarded the Gellhorn prize to the doctor's report and the pictures, things don't seem to add up. Gellhorn would probably be horrified, and I had the feeling that the award was yet another attempt to use a Jew, or in this case a prize named for a Jew who despised Palestinians' whining, to justify an attack on Israel while claiming that it couldn't be antisemitism.

And now ladies and gentleman let's visit the Guardian CIF and read the newest and naturally totally unsubstatntiated and unproved story about the brutal child abuse by the IDF penned by Mr. Freedman.
The horrors of Mr. Omer are nothing relative to his accucations.(http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/jul/16/israelandthepalestinians.middleeast)
17 | AKUS MD USA, Wednesday Jul 16, 2008
hakunamata - Can you imagine any other "Israeli" writing an article like Freedman's latest to be published the day the remains of Regev and Goldwasser are returned to Israel? Disgusting.
18 | hakunamatata, Wednesday Jul 16, 2008
AKUS 1. Your posts on CIF are excellent. 2. Freedman is a disgrace writing about the subject anthe same day when in Lebanon Samir Kuntar who smashed the head of 4 years old child will get a heroe's welcome. 3. The editors of the Guardian CIF must be very proud today.
19 | Ziongate, Jerusalem, Israel, Friday Jul 18, 2008
Does anyone know what has taken place with regard to Seth Freedman supposed willingness to debate Petra?
20 | Petra, Bat Yam, Saturday Jul 19, 2008
Ziongate: yes, you are right that SF agreed to the debate, and both the JPost and Cif offered to host it. It has been scheduled for Cif in their "Take Two" format, and I hope it will work out maybe even this week.

This is part of access journalism. Omer is an award winning Palestinian journalist who is loyal only to the Palestinian ruling elite. He writes nothing that Abbas and the leaders of Hamas do not agree to in advance. For more, this is a MUST READ on access journalism and the REASON why journalism is slanted heavily towards the Palestinian position:
http://www.theaugeanstables.com/2008/07/03/access-journalism-in-palestinian-controlled-territory/#more-1370
I not only recommend the above article but EVERYTHING on Landes' website. He is the man who coined the term "Pallywood". ENJOY!
22 | AKUS MD USA, Monday Jul 21, 2008
Petra - I await the debate with interest. Hapoel Bat Yam vs Hapoel Jerusalem!
23 | Lilliput from London, Sunday Aug 03, 2008
Hi Petra
I got to your site while trying to find something in the Jewish media about Mohammed Omer. I originally found it on the Fanonite websita nd I attach a link:
http://fanonite.org/2008/08/03/israeli-strip-searches/#more-2316
I am just amazed that no enquiry is made to such a serious allegation . Don't you as a journalist want to find out what really happened - whether it shows Israeli officers misehaving or the journalist is lying. I for one want to know what happened! Denying the incident and calling him a liar won't help either side.
